Windoze 10 Fall 2018 Flopdate, now with even more nothingness

@pie_flavor: Yes, we already established that you're living in a parallel universe a long time ago.
-
@Zerosquare Yes, I put that in my signature so you don't have to keep reminding me anymore.

@Parody And yet I'm running it.
Me too. So? It was released then pulled. Plenty of people had a chance to get it if they wished, either before it was pulled or from someone sharing the installer afterwards. At the moment, however, if you go to download it from Microsoft you will get 1803.
-
I'll also add that the rerelease may be coming later today; it is Patch Tuesday for November and the Insider builds seem to have the worst bugs stomped out. Who really knows, though?

:cough::cough:
ALL known bugs are never fixed. They're just re-targetted for "next" release. In other words, there are no open bugs targetted for this release.

: Next release is tomorrow. Are we ready?
: There's a handful of bugs left.
: Can we fix them?
: If we postpone the release.
: Do they know about them? Any critical? Can they sue us over this?
: Not all. No. Don't think so.
: Deploy.I'm the younger dude.

Fixed for us.

moved your user folders
I've done that.
@anonymous234 said in Windoze 10 Fall 2018 Flopdate, now with even more nothingness:
and have your files in the old folder
I have those for two reasons:
- There's some old projects that look for files in The Stupid Way, and expect them to be in that folder. I absolutely do not want to try to edit those project files to move them somewhere else.
- Windows is stupid, and occasionally when I click "Documents" it goes to the old folder because that's different from "Documents".

I'm pretty sure I nuked that whole thing a long time ago. Does that count?
Oh, I guess I don't meet the other criteria though: having installed the update.

I just made symlinks in the old location pointing to the new location. Fixes all misbehaving apps in my experience.

No wonder your hand hurt after using a new mouse if it takes longer to right-click-drag a folder to another folder...
-
@Lorne-Kates If you do, note that I mixed up the two paths. Path is where the old path should be; Value is where the new one is.

Well, thanks, that typo caused my computer to gain sentience, and has been going around to all my neighbors with a flamethrower.
And since I don't really like my neighbors, the thanks is sincere.

@Lorne-Kates Oh, is that why there's so much goddamn smoke in the air.

Reminds me of an issue where using the windows direct connect VPN thing if IPv6 was disabled it wouldn't work, despite not touching IPv6 outside the local computer (i.e. IPv4 all the way to the remote network).
-
@Tsaukpaetra so wait, when they say it relies on it, does it mean it just wants them to be on, or does it actually use it exclusively?
I assume the former, which is stupid, because if you can't use it for reasons, why would you have it on?
If it's the latter, that's also stupid, because you can have it on all you like, but if you can't actually use it for reasons, you're fucked! Then again, you can decide if not being able to use Edge or Store is "being fucked" or not.
I'm in the second group btw, because

Yes. I believe the VPN thing used IPv6 exclusively for a crude form of traffic shaping and routing (the remote network gets transparently mapped to an IPv6 range) with some DNS shenanigans.
It... Almost kinda worked, when I tried it.

Imagine that. A Windows 10 edition with honest messages.
"All your files may or may not be where you left them."
"Your PC will restart several times for no good reason."
"Please don't turn off this PC. Even if you've been waiting for 30 minutes for that damn update to finish installing."

Alternatively: "Some to none of your files..."
Saying that "some" of your files "are" where you left them implies that at least one of them is still there in all cases. This is not true, as Windows is demonstrably capable of losing all of them.

It would be a shame if anything... Happened to them...

If you're feeling adventurous, you can always get the very latest version of Windows 10 using this program:
https://gitlab.com/uup-dump/downloader/tags/1.0.0-beta.7
It's a moderately clever little program that downloads all the various bits and pieces directly from Microsoft and then assembles them into an .iso file that you can use for installation. I tried it and it actually works.
You can also use it to get Insider Preview versions without officially signing up for Microsoft's Insider Preview program. I don't know why you would want to do that, but you can.

@Tsaukpaetra
Windows Direct Connect is IPv6 all the way, tunneled over IPv4 if necessary. But it uses all IPv6 all the time for computer-to-computer communications, and effectively uses a reverse proxy on your corporate network to communicate with IPv4 resources.

At Microsoft, we believe that change is a good thing, and good things should happen every day.
That's why we've introduced a new feature in Windows 10 called Microsoft AI-Enhanced Updatesโข. A neural network will generate new updates daily by changing random bytes in system files, and analyzing your feedback to keep the ones you like the most. That way, you'll be able to enjoy a Windows 10 experience that is literally unique.

Yeah, not that needed! I just thought it used to go ahead and update if you manually did a check-for-updates...
