Linux Torvalds finally figures out that he's a jackass
-
This week people in our community confronted me about my lifetime of
not understanding emotions. My flippant attacks in emails have been
both unprofessional and uncalled for. Especially at times when I made
it personal. In my quest for a better patch, this made sense to me.
I know now this was not OK and I am truly sorry.The above is basically a long-winded way to get to the somewhat
painful personal admission that hey, I need to change some of my
behavior, and I want to apologize to the people that my personal
behavior hurt and possibly drove away from kernel development
entirely.Go figure.
-
@blakeyrat Now only if you did that.

Quest for a better patch?
-
@Tsaukpaetra Figure out that he's a jackass and most of his comments are uncalled for.
Not that I'm sensitive or anything but it's a little ironic that Blakey's applauding someone for figuring out that they're a jackass.
-
@pie_flavor I also found Blake's rants about Linus ironic considering they are both cut from the same cloth.
-
@blakeyrat Interesting. I guess we'll see how (and if) his style of communication will change.
My guess is, things in the kernel community will remain largely the same. His angry rants were always a tiny minority of his overall communication (did someone do a statistical analysis on that?). If you remove those, I am not sure the overall tone shifts by a significant amount.
-
Now if only Discourse Atwood could reach the same conclusion and apologize for his shitty behaviour too. But, hm, that does seem less likely by an order of magnitude.
-
Oh shit, Linux is fucked
-
I was hoping this was from a message sent on April 1.
-
@Groaner Hence the only logical conclusion is that Linus' computers have been hacked.
Better contact the mailing list to no longer trust his signing key!

Good for him. Let's see if and how this will change his style of communication and whether or not it will have a larger impact.

Especially when I read "The above is basically a long-winded way". That wasn't even a short-breeze.

He's Finnish. That sheer amount of words is equivalent to the Edda saga.

@ben_lubar Both

Even then,

There goes our chances of ever seeing an epic flame war between blakeyrat and linus about git. That would be the best flame war ever.
-
@sockpuppet7 I'd love to see it in the form of dueling PR requests.

Never a chance for that. You need common ground to start a flame war. Blakey is excels in the lightweight division of the ignorant insults category. Linus is a heavyweight in the opinionated technical review category. They couldn't even tackle each other because intellectually they're not in the same space.
-
@gleemonk
I'd think perkeleen vittupää stands a good chance, at least in the well-opinionated insults category.

New BBC interview with jackass:

@blakeyrat The creed of pretty much all IT people: "I try to be polite. And then idiots happen."
-
@Rhywden
I tried to be polite. But have you met my cow-orkers?
-
@blakeyrat
They really buried the lede there..."In the meantime, I'm taking a break from the kernel and probably shouldn't talk to journalists."
So, basically, he's grasping at fame and taking the tried and true method of throwing a snit fit.

@izzion I know someone who had genuine gluten allergy. White bread always ended in pain, fever and IIRC rashes or something. Her grandmother wasn't convinced the allergy was real. So one summer when she spend her entire school vacation with her, the grandma made sure she ate white bread at least once a day. Now she has no gluten allergy.
-
@Gąska There's no such thing as a gluten allergy. Also, food allergies quite often end in people not being able to breathe so it's a very bad idea to fuck around with allergies.
What she probably had was a gluten sensitivity. Which can be subject to spontaneous remissions.
Celiac's disease, by the way, is a life-long issue.
In essence, grandma was an asshole of the highest order.

Celiac's disease
Oh, that! That's what it's called!
@Rhywden said in Linux Torvalds finally figures out that he's a jackass:

She was. But now her granddaughter can eat all the pizza she wants!
-
@Gąska She did not have celiac's. Celiac's is incurable.
-
@Rhywden she very definitely has celiac's. Or at least, she very definitely told me that she has. I remember the name now that you mentioned it. And I'm not saying it's cured - I'm saying the symptoms don't happen anymore.
-
@Rhywden said in Linux Torvalds finally figures out that he's a jackass:
@Gąska She did not have celiac's. Celiac's is incurable.
It might have been one of several other adverse reactions to wheat: non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), gluten ataxia, dermatitis herpetiformis (DH), and wheat allergy, which is a true allergy and may manifest as either a food allergy or a skin contact allergy.
-
@HardwareGeek
Also, hypochondria.

Celiac disease can often be asymptomatic. If she indeed has it, it's still slowly damaging the intestinal membrane, despite the lack of symptoms.
Has she actually been tested for it? There's a simple blood test. It also has a very strong, though less than 100% (~80% IIRC, but to check), correlation with a couple of specific genetic markers and is considered to be hereditary.
-
@HardwareGeek said in Linux Torvalds finally figures out that he's a jackass:
Has she actually been tested for it?
Yes. That's how she (well, her parents) knew it was celiac and not some other thing from your list.
-

But at least she can eat pizza now!!1
SRSLY, WTF. If she hadn't been tested and the grandma had had reason to believe it was just hypochondria, OK. But after a positive test—that would be the last holiday my son spent with grandma and no adult supervision if it had been he.

Then, as @HardwareGeek told you, she's basically eating poison.
-
@Rhywden not my problem
-
@Gąska said in Linux Torvalds finally figures out that he's a jackass:

This is a fucking stupid thing to say.
Celiac's is the body's inability to digest gluten. Specifically, the body recognizes gluten proteins but categorizes them as "invaders" instead of "food". That means if you eat gluten, it is like eating a mouthful of Styrofoam. It will sit in your stomach like a rock before being shoved into your intestines. Your whole gut will cramp up to all shit trying to force it out. Your immune system will attack it also, for good measure. There's no "Oh, i'll just eat a bit of Styrofoam for a week to get used to it."
There aren't "symptoms". They're the entire disease itself. It's like saying "Me falling into this pit is just a symptom of this hole being dug". No, it's the entire goddamn reason you're falling. There's no ground to support you!
If she was given white bread, she'd be spending the afternoon curled up into a bad in intense pain. Probably also farting up the place (though not as bad as lactose intolerance).
If she's Celiac (as in she's actually gone to a reputable doctor & specialist who has confirmed this, using blood test, etc), then she's Celiac forever. There's no cure. Your body GENETICALLY just does not have the ability to handle gluten.
If she's "gluten-intolerant", then sure you can "cure" it in the same way you "cure" Wifi Allergy. It's a stupid bullshit made up thing that, even if the person isn't faking to get attention, they are at the very least mistaken the cause of whatever symptoms they have. Oh, and then they can also overpay for fad-focues "gluten-free" products that look, smell and taste like shit, but are perfect for parting suckers from their money.
