I know that really old Apples were shit-tarded about not having Backspace,
Old Apples only had Backspace. (The key was labeled "delete" but the action it performed was what a IBM PC of the time would call "backspace".) Mac Classic didn't have "delete forward" (what an IBM PC calls just "delete") until way into the era when they tried making their keyboards more DOS compatible, in the mid/late 90s.
I'm sure there was some key combo to perform a "delete forward" but I don't know what it was.
I mean I've been using Windows for decades and I've used delete forward like... 5 times? Maybe? 99.999% of the time what I want is Backspace. Apple made the right call.
My memory was backward, then. The delete deleted backward, and I think forward delete could be accomplished by adding a single modifier key (although I don't know which key it was). I'm pretty sure it wasn't a 3-key combo.
-

Ever since classic Mac OS the option key combos would give you a pretty intuitive way to write whatever fancy and/or international characters you wanted.
Yeah one of the things I miss about it is like:
Option-E E = é
Option-E (any character) = (that character with an acute accent)
Option-N N = ñetc.
The Mac Classic keyboard was brilliant. IBM has done the world a huge disservice by never once rationalizing the IBM PC keyboard layouts, and Microsoft missed a huge opportunity to fix some of this moronicy when they added the Start and Context Menu buttons but failed. It's not like Apple had some kind of super-genius powers, it's just that they started from scratch in 1984 and actually spent time thinking this shit out. IBM's and Microsoft's philosophy by contrast was "we've always done it this way".
It still works that way in modern Mac OS, but for whatever reason it didn't take off on PC. Microsoft has something kind of similar (Ctrl + ', e gives you é), but I think it only works in Office.

let's keep it rooted in reality, no?
We're talking about EU. The guys who tried to make publishing photos of buildings illegal.
Well, the US has those laws too.
Did you know that, for example, the Hollywood sign is copyrighted? Las Vegas Hotels as well as pretty much all of the Burning Man Festival.
So next time you might want to look around.
-
@rhywden a quick Google says it's about trademark laws more than copyright laws. So publishing photo of Hollywood sign is akin to publishing phote of Coke can. I'm pretty sure I can publish photo of Coke can freely without repercussions. Also, from what I've found, no one talking about this Hollywood thing is an actual lawyer, and there was never any lawsuit related to it - so I'm gonna call bullshit until I see more legitimate source than a random youtuber making Top 10 lists.
-
@gąska @Rhywden Trademark laws (which are what protect those things) prevent you from using them in the same commercial context (that is, claiming that they're your marks) in a way that is likely to produce consumer confusion. It's a totally separate field of law from copyright and has almost no similar implications. It's insanely limited (there's multiple
Apple
corporations out there), it's only about commercial use, it doesn't prevent reproduction in any way...it's basically a completely different field that covers completely different things. Mixing the two is not even wrong.
-
@benjamin-hall as I said.
-
@gąska yup. I was amplifying, not contradicting you. Sorry for any confusion.

While searching for this image, I learned two things: since today, Google Images embeds images on result page as
data:image/png;base64
links, and NodeBB can display them.
-
@rhywden Der, what?
That page specifically says that it's trademarked, which as we just finished saying is completely different from copyright. Specifically, you can't use it in a commercial context where the use is likely to cause consumer confusion.
A little further digging shows that it isn't trademarked at all and multiple attempts to do so have been denied. There is state law that specifically allows the use of that image in any context whatsoever. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has trademarked one particular hollywood logo used on its gift shop bags. That's it.
And so you're the one pushing for garage status here.

What's wrong with the US-International keyboard layout, after you've disabled the Alt-Shift shortcut? If I'm going to be typing something in Spanish, I push Win+Space, and then all my accents get done by pressing apostrophe and then the letter - it's muscle memory at this point from when I had it enabled all the time. And then when I'm done I just press Win+Space again and I'm back to normal.

It may be an ok workaround but it puts your input in a different mode that you have to remember to turn off. And in my case, I had to cycle through win+space a few times to get it back to The One True Keyboard Layout, because it also had to go through the Canadian keyboard layouts.
e: But you are completely right about disabling the alt-shift shortcut. Whose stupid idea was it to put the "accidentally fuck up my shit" shortcut on the combination of two modifier keys?

No, that was whiteout ink. The tape came later. And invariably you wouldn't wait long enough and re-type across wet white out.
