packed with Electron for desktop
I'd love it so much if said apps used Windows' builtin support for web apps that has been there since Win8 instead of shipping and running an entire Chromium. (Netflix, Soundcloud, Twitter already do.)
-
@marczellm I would love it if they just let me use the browser of my choice that is already installed on my computer.
It's a web app after all

Yes thank you that was the joke.

Of course it’s obvious that Atom would have Electron as a component, it wouldn’t be Atom without it...

Atom
I just spent like fifteen minutes trying to find a comic where someone explains the etymology of "atom" and then someone else asks "can we divide them" but I can't find it.

Accurate portrayal, I think.

Yay, new Skype update. Video is completely broken on both sides, we just get black screens. Also, once in a call the interface no longer responds to clicks. The only way I can end a call is to kill it in Task Manager.
-
@mott555 At one point it kinda responded to clicks, but not really. Super slugglish and delayed.
So the Skype call ended, and a minute later the Skype settings dialog opened up...inside my Empyrion game window and after Skype is closed.
The Skype team needs to be executed for crimes against humanity. Nobody can possibly be this incompetent.

I can understand "love gift" being found for "bang"
But I'm having trouble understanding "witch".

OH HELL NO!
So far its only intervention was to suggest that I send a message with

Because that's a hard thing to type.

.Indubitably.
(For some reason, that's the favourite suggestion in our work Skype chat. We don't use the word otherwise, of course.)
-
I recently noticed that I can no longer drag-select multiple messages in a conversation window and copy-paste their content. It either selects parts of the single message where the mousedown happens, or nothing at all if the mousedown happens between messages. Fucking hell.
-
@DCoder:
"Skype suffers from feature creep. Do you know what we should do?"
"I know! Every time we introduce a new, broken feature, we should remove an existing, working one."
-
Fun fact: the button you click to make a call aligns perfectly with the button to drop an incoming call, when it appears. Guess how I know.

You just managed to end the "no you hang up! No you!" loop and was about to disconnect when they managed to do so first, which resulted in you re-dialing them and starting the process all over again?
-
@Tsaukpaetra I LOLed, but it's to drop an incoming call; not an in-progress call

Which is strange that you aren't allowed to simply hotlink the images, would be nice to save bandwidth...
You can hotlink XKCD comics. There's even a URL for hotlinking them. But then @Lorne-Kates would need to modify his script and
Yes, but there's also a Random page on XKCD itself.
My script calls that page, and gets a random XKCD html page. I parse out the URL for the image, then make another call for just the image. That image gets streamed in the response, and now you have a random image!
I THINK I cache the image links. Or the image data itself. I can't remember.
In theory I could just crawl the site and pre-grab all the image URLs. But then I'd have to put in a cron job to get latest 3 times a week-- and have to worry about image URL format changing-- and yuck.
-
@Lorne-Kates If you append "/info.0.json" to the URL you can grab the image easily.
https://xkcd.com/2019/info.0.json

Sometimes. Usually there isn't.

https://xkcd.com/2019/info.0.jsonSubmit a PR, asshole.
... sorry, got 'd there.
Yes, that's a good idea. When the screen-scraping breaks (not if-- when) I'll mod the script. Thanks.

Are you saying... it's random?
-
@Lorne-Kates If you really wanted to, you could hit https://xkcd.com/info.0.json to get the current number of comics, then grab the data for a random one between 1 and that, being sure not to include 404.

It took a few years but now Skype for Win10 has gotten an old feature back: the notification area icon!
-
WTF is this bullshit and how to I make it stop animating?
I clicked it and my avatar changed to that hearts animation, which is a wonderful thing to happen in a professional call.

TRWTF is you not using
Microsoft TeamsLyncSkype for BusinessHonest question: does it allow talking with people on Skype?
-
@Zecc No, of course it does not. Also Teams is not an upgrade for Lync/Shit for Business, but a completely separate application. It tried to be an upgrade for a while, but failed miserably and given up.
Note that Shit for Business is actually built using a somewhat sane suite of standard VOIP protocols SIP and SRTP and therefore is not a completely walled garden unto itself (though most other clients don't support the encryption Microsoft chose, so they end up not being compatible anyway) unlike most other chat applications including Teams.
The other aspect is that both standard(ish) IM/VOIP protocol suites—SIP and XMPP—suck balls. Big time.
Also, the Web version of Teams gratuitously only supports calls in Edge. They can be actually made to work in Chrome and/or Chromium, including on Linux, by simply faking the user-agent string, but it breaks other parts of the UI quite badly too, so it is not a practical solution. Maybe somebody could Monkey-patch it, but I didn't get enough round tuits to check whether somebody already did yet.
-
… tuit sacrificed. Does not look like it.
-
@Zecc Lync I'm pretty sure does not. Skype for Business does. Teams does not.
-
Sigh. I miss being able to set my status to "Away".
...Wait a second!

When I upgraded my computer and installed Windows from scratch a few months ago the Store version of Skype came with it. I didn't really care; I haven't used Skype for a long time and this computer doesn't have a camera or microphone anyway.
The other day they changed it to run in the background all the time with an icon in the notification area. That got me to uninstall it and leave it a junk review in the Store and the Feedback Hub. Good work, Skype team!
-
@Parody The Windows Store version always runs in the background by default unless you turn that off in the settings (it even signs you in automatically), the only new thing you mentioned was the tray icon.

That's unfortunate if that's how it worked before; I'd only used the desktop version up until the reinstall and it didn't/was set to not start at startup or keep running in the background.
Not something I have to worry about now, though.
-
FWIW, they did add a setting to turn off the system tray icon. This doesn't stop it from doing crap in the background (there's a mix of internal and system-level Settings for that for the UWP app) but at least they did something.
-
(santamooning) is a thing.
NodeBB won't let me upload it as is, but it's animated. You can see it at http://www.skaip.org/santamooning-emoticon
-
-
@hungrier Fine. You were able to do it.
No need to be rude...
-
-
-
How many of you noticed that the latest update replaced Windows Store Skype, an UWP app, with a nearly-identical Electron version?
-
@marczellm I sure did notice. Having 5 processes running was the hint already. Also the slow startup and always eating cycles for no good reason. What a nice update.
-
I bet this is behind the latest Skype misbehaviour of going fully white during calls, making the UI unusable until a restart.

On one of my machines, incoming sound in Skype calls quickly becomes choppy, unless Mumble is also running. It doesn't have to be connected anywhere, just needs to sit there in the background with its echo suppression running idle. Starting Mumble during a choppy call also helps.
Not sure whether to blame Skype or PulseAudio.
