Yuck.
I love how they say "The funds will instantly be converted into CAD".
So let me get this straight...
- I use my CAD to buy Bitcoins
- I give you Bitcoins
- You turn Bitcoins into CAD
- There's a huge difference in the CAD before and after, because of exchange fees and price volatility.
If there's one thing governments that plan annual budgets are well known for loving, it's instability and uncertainty of available funds.

@Lorne-Kates Pull a @blakeyrat with the crypto, and pay significantly less than you owe.
Wait. I smell a herd of CEOs.

This is just weird...
For the second year in a row, denizens of a large German-language online forum have donated more than USD $250,000 to cancer research organizations in protest of a story KrebsOnSecurity published in 2018 that unmasked the creators of Coinhive, a now-defunct cryptocurrency mining service that was massively abused by cybercriminals. Krebs is translated as “cancer” in German.

From the non-sequitur-altruism department??

You can mine shitcoins for Razer
-
@TimeBandit So... Based off the flat store discounts I value the Razer shitcoins to $1 per 500 silver. But if I pick one of the more expensive offerings, like a keyboard for 280000s ($560), that one in a regular store can be found for down to about $200. Hmm...

"The New Razer Gold & Silver"
So what changed compared to December last year? I knew we already talked about it.
-
@JBert Of course the New Razer Gold & Silver is new! They improved it by putting the word "New" in front of it! That way, people know it's new and not, well, not new!

So in other words, it's not-not new?

So, PewDiePie has partnered with a new streaming service to exclusively stream on their platform. This service is called DLive and it's blockchain-powered. Apparently running on Lino, which is THE cryptocurrency for content creation and streaming, allegedly. Well, it's not been released yet, it's still in the testing phase. But apparently DLive is running on the test network just fine.
Well, the main thing they go all out to say is how the platform takes zero cuts, it all goes to the content creators AND viewers. So when you buy Lino points, you got 90.1% of the ones you bought to give to the creator of choice. And the other 9.9% goes to the "locked points holders", which are people who decided to "lock" an amount of Lino Points to the platform for the extra joy of daily questionnaires and such shit! You can also unlock your points, a process which takes 12 weeks to complete. Oh, and creating a DLive account will automatically create a Lino testing account for you too. Woo.
So, creators gets "paid" through gifts by viewers and a bonus based on their performance. And viewers gets paid for being active participants, and gifting and chatting and stuff like that. DLive gets Lino points straight from Lino for using their network, to cover the running costs. And Lino gets the points from, um, I dunno. That's not explained anywhere that I could see. So I am not clear where this cryptocurrency is actually mined.
I did notice that 1LP = $0.0012. And one video that showed viewer participation reward showed the viewer getting 4 points. So that's like half a cent! Wow! Much money! Well, as with all cryptocurrencies, the information is all bullshit bingo material and loads of words saying absolutely nothing. And the websites are all broken shitpiles, as per the modern standard.
Anyway, if you wanna read up on it, here's the links:

running on Lino
Noun
lino (usually uncountable, plural linos)- (Australia, New Zealand, Britain, colloquial, informal) Clipping of linoleum.
Not a good idea, it can be quite slippery.
-
Hello?
Is it Lino riches you're looking for?
-
@Deadfast I also found this:
Lino, slang for a habitual user of the narcotic cocaine.
Ah, it all makes sense now.
-
@Atazhaia Quite likely, with that model, the coins are mined by the "player" on the viewer's machine. Don't see how else it would work. Not sure how they intend to actually pay anyone though, I guess they're assuming people will want to use their cryptocurrency which they probably don't.

@levicki the better question would be: what’s the point of a centralized (facebook) crypto coin, over a traditional centralized approach like PayPal.

That sounds like a foursome. Also I am sure nobody meant that.

@TimeBandit it’s sometimes hard to tell if this is a new breach or just another story about an old one, because they happen so regularly.
Makes you wonder: when was the last time a bank got robbed and you lost your money because it wasn’t insured? When was the last time a bank embezzled your money and claimed it got “robbed”?

Exchanges aren't banks; in the shitcoin world, you get be your own bank!

Sounds like prime bottom land to me.

To implement DAG, an operating system had to be selected. After heavy research on various blockchain platforms,

That's okay. In Blockchainland, words are meaningless anyways.

So what's new in the world of crypto? Well, there's it's intersection with The Dark Web (tm). It may shock you, but people who run unscrupulous criminal enterprises are themselves unscrupulous criminals.
The rundown:
- Wall Street Market is a silk-road type marketplace
- The FBI and others have been investigating and cracking down on these markets
- The people who own WSM can see the writing on the wall
- So they just took everyone's money ~$30M and fucked off
This is apparently so common in dark markets that "they've exited" is a common and instantly recognized term for "whoops, we got fucked by another exit scam".
And the cherry on the cake: a moderator and community manager for the marketplace gathered up any PII he could (some people actually provided names or addresses, idiots), and sent out blackmail notices. His account got banned, but then other support staff are apparently jumping on that fuckwagon.
Sidenote: while reading up on this story, in what should surprise absolutely no one, I've discovered that the majority of "cryptocurrency news sites" just literally scrape other sites like CNN, and life the articles wholesale. Including stock images used for headers. So if you want to read the same story over and over and over, google for "Med3I1n" (the name of the blackmailing mod).

I'm thinking “no, not shocking me at all”.

One more, since it's a long weekend.
Let's file this one under "Bitcoin sure is a boon to humanity and makes the world a better place THAT WAS SARCASM".
Y'all remember that massive investigation into, among other things, Russia's interference with the 2016 election?
(Sidenote: I cannot recommend enough the podcast 'Behind the Bastards' examination of the report... https://www.behindthebastards.com/podcasts/the-mueller-report-episode.htm)
So Russia ran this massive network of proxies and vpns to hide their activities. Those activities included lots and lots of web hosting, to create and maintain websites used in disinformation campaigns. Well, those websites ain't free, but money leaves a paper trail. So how did Russia pay for those web hosting bills?
Simple, they looked for web hosting companies who accepted Bitcoin:
