@Rhywden seems plausible. It still doesn't make sense, but it seems plausible.
Naw, it's actually sensible but only if you're older, have this kind of risk-factor in your family or some other issue with coagulation - sitting still in one place over long periods does increase the risk of blood clots forming in your legs.

Or can just happen. There's no history in my family of clotting issues. Until me. Let's just say it's FUCKING scary. (I have a thread in the lounge) Hoping that one episode will be all I ever experience...

Nice! I wish the cops in Pennsylvania took reckless driving that seriously! It would have cut way down on the incidences of me coming within about half a second of getting in a wreck, which happened too many times to count over the last two years...

Stop being John Nestor. Problem solved.

@masonwheeler In Finland speeding does hurt a lot. They have a similar speed limit on about 95% of their streets.
And while they don't throw you in jail for speeding, the fine is proportional to your income (and starts off at a higher base, to boot).
Which resulted in a Nokia manager having to shell out half a million Euros several years back.
And, of course, there's also Switzerland which fines you when you are one(1) kph over the limit. And if you go way too fast in Switzerland, they may impound your car, sell it in an auction and pocket the money.
-
@masonwheeler I dunno if this is the whole of the US or just part of it but your Drunk Driving laws seem quite lax compared to the UK.
If you drive drunk in the UK that is instant ban for years and maybe go to prison.
(BTW while I might be a drunk I will never drive like it, it just isn't an option).

@lucas1 taking someone off the road if they drive drunk. That sounds very reasonable to me.

@masonwheeler you downvoted my reply, but if you did not loiter in the fast lane, you would greatly reduce all of that.

...by loitering in the fast lane and obstructing traffic. Yes, I remember.
-
@Polygeekery So your finition for "loitering" is "going as fast as I can without risking being pulled over by a cop"?
-
@masonwheeler The whole point of lanes is that if you are faster than the rest of the traffic you go in the fastest lane while overtaking, and recede to the slower lane when you aren't.
-
@lucas1 Yes, I know this. The slow lanes frequently go about 5-10 below the speed limit, which is why I preferred to avoid them. :P
-
@masonwheeler If I am in the outside lane and I am still overtaking people couldn't give a toss what the guy is doing behind me. I leave him to it.
-
@masonwheeler said in Getting hyper loop vibes...:

Yes. You are driving slower than the flow of traffic and obstructing the flow of traffic while loitering in the fast lane. Then you wonder why people get pissed off at you.

Oh, it also needs to be able to do this without a complicated infrastructure change. (so not some special recharging station that won't exist in 99% of the US).
Uh-huh, sure. I like the whole electric car concept, but I'm not going to pretend the infrastructure is there for the whole continental US yet, not even over all the coastal states.

What?! Nescafé is the greatest coffee there is! Huh, you're probably one of those hipster wannabes who pretend that if you pay $5 for a coffee it somehow tastes better, because it's made from better grounds, it was properly roasted and then ground right before brewing, thus ensuring fresh and full aroma. Fool! Loser!

If I grew up on a farm large enough to grow corn, have an orchard, and raise several different kinds of farm animal, that's pretty rural in my book.
There are plenty of farms that big in suburban Dallas, though most are devoted to cattle (and they use vacant lots to grow hay).

This is the same state that wanted to have a $2500 speeding ticket for doing 20 over the limit.

We mostly solve the speeding ticket problem around here by having too much traffic to speed. But you're familiar with that.

What traffic? Unless I have an early-morning meeting with a customer, I leave late enough in the morning to travel at speed on the roads. The only times this strategy doesn't work out are when it rains and/or two or more idiots bump into each other, which hardly ever happens... more than once or twice a week.

Which is plenty practical for @Polygeekery's 400-mile trip.
Well, whether that's practical or not depends on how quickly it charges
People only care about range because charging is still such a big problem. Gasoline is everywhere and I can fill my tank in a few minutes. When charging an electric car reaches a comparable state, both in terms of ubiquity of charging stations and time need for charging, then range becomes irrelevant.
Until then, for most people, the certainty of knowing you can go anywhere, any distance, any time and refuel in a matter of minutes, far outweighs any benefits an electric vehicle may offer.
-
@El_Heffe said in Getting hyper loop vibes...:
time need for charging
I can't see that getting as quick as refuelling a petrol car without some sort of quick swap batteries. Recharging batteries too fast reduces their lifespan and would involve an amperage so high that one slip could be really dangerous.
However, I think the majority of people who mention range and recharge times as a factor would rarely if ever actually be impacted. My car does 11 miles twice a day to get me into work, a distance that even the weediest of electric cars would manage without a problem. My wife's car is the one we do longer journeys in, and even that rarely does more than 100 miles a day. A Tesla would get from where I live to my parents on the other side of the country with charge to spare, and that's a journey I do once a year if that. We also do plenty of stops when we do it because fuck driving that far in one stretch.
Yes, some people regularly drive 250+ miles in a day. Electric cars are not currently suitable for those people. Those people are also a tiny minority. Some people, if they had only an electric car, would be inconvenienced a couple of times a year when doing long road trips. All that would take would be a slight change to their stopping pattern, or something like hiring a car and switching half way for a fully charged one. Not ideal, but people would adapt.
Or you can keep moaning that once you thought about driving 10000 miles in 4 hours and that an electric car is a stupid idea for everyone because of that
