Let's play Is this a troll or serious?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDAGs6fEc-A
And before you say this is the result of common core, this guy is from Canada, and they were produced before common core was really a thing.
-
I'm going with 'mentally ill'.
-
Reminds me of this south park episode.

@The_Quiet_One That's... not weird? It's just a mnemonic story to help you memorize times tables. It's not a very good one, but meh.

It's not just a "not very good one" it's a friggen horrible one. Mnemoics should be quick, easy, and above all require no arbitrary memorization because that's exactly what they're trying to avoid. There's nothing quick and easy about what this guy is teaching:
1.) Golf clubs can look like a 6 or a 9 depending on how it's shown. You can have a 6 iron or a 9 iron, so that's not going to help you, either.
2.) "How many poles does a tent have? Remember, it's red, like the tricycle" is so amazingly bad. Tents can have an arbitrary number of poles depending on their type and brand. It's like asking, "how many doors does a house have?" If a kid goes camping a lot, and they use a tent that has a different number of poles, it's going to throw them off. And the color is just as pointless.
3.) The story itself is so nonsensical and strung out, it's impossible to memorize without the same rote memorization you'd probably need to do to memorize the times table in the first place. The setup takes over a minute to explain. Mnemonics are supposed to take seconds to explain. (e.g. "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge" or "ROY-G-BIV"). It's supposed to stick like a jingle would in a radio ad. Thinking about hitting golf balls at a tree on top of your dad in a sleeping bag and trying to wedge a tent in the story completely defeats this.
And this is just one of the stories. Imagine having to learn a nonsensical story for about a hundred multiplication problems for the first 9 numbers.

Blech, hell no.
I've heard "Every Good Boy Does Fine" too.

I assumed this video was part of a series and the tricycle had been introduced earlier. I could be wrong. Either way, you're right that this doesn't seem like a very good mnemonic.

Our version was "Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit". Yours would probably get kids interested quicker.

Still sounds like utter lunacy to us who don't know what those refer to...
-
@Onyx Mnemonics help you remember lists of words by turning them into a sentence, which gives you a lot of help for free (because you know which words in a sentence need to be before others, for example).
The first one you quoted is for remembering the music notes on the lines of the treble clef . The other one is for remembering the colours, and more importantly, their order, of the rainbow. I've only ever seen it as I posted above: Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain.
Other nice ones are Never Eat Soggy Waffles, for the compass points, My Very Elderly Mother Just Served Us Nachos, for the planets, The Old Animal Carried A Heavy Sack Of Hay, for trigonometry, and my personal favourite, Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move, for remembering how to spell 'rhythm'.
-
@coldandtired I know what mnemonics are, I'm just pointing out that given the language barrier and culture differences, most of them sound insane if you don't know what they are mnemonics for.
Don't think there's really some secret Canadian mnemonics society the rest of the world doesn't know about which makes the video in OP make more sense, just a general observation.

That reminds me, I should check if there's one for resistor values. I almost never need it, but I'm rather annoyed by not being able to read the values off when I do (been too damned long since I memorized the table in school and it vaporized ages ago).

It's useful if you need to know the fates of the wives of Henry VIII. So yes, useless. :)

@dkf I'm sure for some history teachers it's the highlight of their year :)

@Onyx I had to teach a new one to some of the engineers I worked with at a comms company, after the ex-Navy comms guy service manager taught them the one he knew. Memorable, I'll grant you.

I can't honestly say, in the 35 years or so since I was at primary school, that I've ever needed to know "times tables".
-
@The_Quiet_One said in Golf club X Kite = Tent Sleeping Bag:

Agreed, on all points. But "mentally ill"? Comparing it to the much-reviled (undeservedly, in my opinion, but that's another thread's problem) common core? It's just a guy being bad at teaching. There's probably a billion guys who suck at teaching out there.

The only problem with that is Pluto's demotion to 'dwarf planet' in 2006. So, it should now be:

My Very Educated Mother Just Sent Us? Nein!

Is there a mnemonic for when you keep forgetting all those mnemonics?

Simple. Repeated addition.

Or, more likely, you know (most of) them so well that you don't even realise that you know and use them.
Like "addition tables" : I remember learning some at the very beginning of my school years, but it becomes almost a reflex so early that nobody would say that they use "addition tables" in their daily lives.
-

@remi or these:

Nope, they've got it over here too. Tastes like shredded paper.
They also have "Frosted Mini-Wheats", which is bite-sized shredded wheat pellets coated in Frosted Flakes frosting. It tastes like shredded paper with sugar.
-
@coldandtired said in Golf club X Kite = Tent Sleeping Bag:
Other nice ones are ... My Very Elderly Mother Just Served Us Nachos
They're nicer if the sentence is related to the thing. That's the main reason I'm saddened by the fact that Pluto isn't a planet, and the main reason Planet 9, if confirmed, needs to be named Persephone.
(You can keep your 'nine pizzas', that's just silly.) But I like your RHYTHM one.

That's not a bug, it's a feature. Insane-sounding things are easier to remember. Also bear in mind that people who use mnemonics already know what the mnemonics are for.

I've always called it shredded cardboard, myself, but cardboard is just extra thick paper (and glue, if it's corrugated cardboard), so same idea.

Hey, I didn't call him mentally ill. My game was whether he's a troll or not. And I wanted to avoid the common core responses by pointing out the anachronism of such a statement.
And, yes, there are tons of people who are bad at teaching. Some worse than others. I would say this guy is towards the bottom of the barrel, though, which is significantly bad. Hell, I'd enjoy any video someone can post here that's hilariously worse than this guy, and is not an obvious troll.

Don't forget Bass Clef
I was trying to remember whether I'd ever learned mnemonics for the bass clef, but I couldn't remember any. Thanks for reminding me.
I just looked up mnemonics for the alto clef, since I always have to work that out every time I look at it. Since we're all so fond of car analogies here, we could go with "Fords And Chevys Eat Gas" and "Good Brakes Don't Fail." If you're more into nature (of sorts), "Fat Alley Cats Eat Garbage" and "Grey Birds Do Fly."

Is he related to Wyclef?
-
When I played piano, as a kid, I had a mnemonic for which mnemonic was which.
-
@CarrieVS a metamnemonic?
-
@Jaloopa I guess.
My mnemonics were Elephants Get Bored Doing French and FACE for the treble clef and for bass it was All Cows Eat Grass for the spaces and something I can no longer remember (it has been a decade or so) which began "George..." for the lines.
In a typical piece of piano music, the stave for the left hand is bass and right is treble, and I found it easier to remember "the elephant's face is on the right, and George's cows are on the left." The elephant naturally came first because the right hand's stave is written above the left.
Does anyone know the George... mnemonic for the bass lines? It's bugging me now.
