Yes, it is: it’s the imperative of the verb zehren.
so I've no idea where that's come from.

Well, not sure why my cursory search didn't turn that up.

Got that, I meant "not sure where 'feed on' came from"

So maybe I'm littering the forum with comics, but this one might as well be based on a "True Story": (click for larger version)

I'm not right next to the microwave at the time
If you microwave popcorn without being near the microwave, you deserve the burnt-shit-and-hair-smell overdone popcorn makes.
Seriously, it takes, like, 2 minutes. Stay in the kitchen. What's so damn important?
-
@Applied-Mediocrity said in Internet of shit:
upon removing your burnt popcorn you are asked to please rate your microwave experience using the
dedicatedmodal, non-dismissable on-screen smiley/frowny buttons on the deviceIOS'd that for you.

That's far too much work. Instead, just slow the electricity down a little by tying a few knots in the microwave's power cord.
My own Physics teacher once demonstrated an experiment which didn't work until he made a knot into the power cord.
My biology teacher had to do the same thing.

@dcon Take enough drugs to forget that singing fish ever existed is probably the best option.
OTOH, taking enough drugs might actually make you like them:

@TimeBandit having worked at Ericsson, I am not the slightest bit of surprised. The management there simply do not listen to engineers when there are sales to be made.

@tharpa said in Internet of shit:

The cascade of fail is even better. A colleague of mine told me that there was at least one flight cancelled because of this (his son works at the local airport). Apparently, the problem was that they couldn't get in contact with the dispatcher to get the flight off within its window because their phone was unreachable because of this. Or maybe it was their pseudo-radio; I don't know the technical details.
This is going to end up costing Ericsson a lot of money.

I would promptly return the TV as defective

@Tsaukpaetra: I really, really wanted to believe it was a joke.
But the comments appear to confirm it isn't, and that some other products (like smartphones) from the same brand do similar things.
Does anyone know how to escape from the Black Mirror episode we appear to be living in?

Judging from BM episodes about escaping, we better stay put.

I run pi hole at home. Reduces ads for most devices.
Can't get all of them tho, for that you need a proxy and a self signed cert.

Maybe, but showing me a 60 seconds ad of your product while I'm trying to switch input on my TV is a sure way to make me boycott all your products

Fun fact: when I bought my new TV, one of the "deal breaker" was if the TV had ads (or ads that couldn't be opted out of).
Some had ads, some had ads AND "suggested content", some had ads OR "suggested content". For all of them, one did not have opt-out.
Except for goddamn Sony. Their TV has NO ads, and the pre-loaded "suggested content" can all be removed from the home screen.
Never in my life would I think I'd be saying "Well, looks like I want to buy a Sony"-- especially not with Vizio, Samsung and LG on the table. But there you go.
(The TV is still never, ever, ever getting on the Internet, though).

I was going to say, “But you then have a TV that sends each and every channel change back to Sony” but:—
(The TV is still never, ever, ever getting on the Internet, though).
… that solves that problem.
(For the record: I bought a new TV a few years ago, and a Sony came out as the best choice for what I wanted. It has all its network abilities firmly turned off and unconnected, though.)
-
I think we need custom firmwares for TVs. Right now you can still find "non-smart" ones, but I feat they're gonna end-up like cell phones.

You're still buying from a company that puts rootkits on your computer.

If it's going to load ads, I could see them pre-loading an extra-long ad extolling the virtues of getting the internet on that thing set up the way it likes it.

If you look at the processors they are basically small arm boards of arm SOC designs and the actual TV is simply a monitor with a digital tuner attached.
Since most of these machines are running Linux, couldn't people petition them to release the source code for the core OS as it is surely to be GPL'd?

Nope.
The kernel source needs to be open source, but anything beyond that can be closed or open source.

I appreciate that. However how unique are these chipsets?
It is a long time since I have bothered mucking about with Linux. The main problem with boards like these would proprietary kernel modules and the boot process. Realistically how likely are they to be running something that is unique and hasn't been reversed engineered yet?

Based on my Android experience..... it entirely depends on how open the manufacturer is to having custom firmware, and how weird the hardware is. It's probably not too hard to make modded firmware, but building clean, ad free firmware from scratch is probably very difficult..

Unfortunately looks to be abandoned. However there is plenty of information of getting into older LG TVs of the generation which I have.
I've still got a RS232 PCI card laying around somewhere, I might spend a few quid on ebay, get the adapter cable and see if I can get into the TVs OS.
-
@sweaty_gammon said in Internet of shit:

Basically no. The only people who have the standing to make a claim in that direction and have it stick, have also made open and widely reported statements that they will not be exercising that right except for in relation to the OS kernel itself and exclude third-party drivers from that too. By the legal principle of laches, changing now when the TV makers haven't done anything special (i.e., not breaking a pre-set condition) would end up with a slam-dunk case for the defense.
