One would expect that embedded systems would generally use two-partition updates: flash the new version in one partition, then try to reboot into it, if it does not work, reboot back into the previous version. I mean, it's kind of obvious way to do updates without much risk of bricking the device, right? But no. On the desk behind me sits a big industrial electronic control unit that if flashing it is interrupted, it will stay in the bootloader and do nothing until you successfully flash it.
Our hardware generally does this, the problem with dual-partition is that you require twice the space, even if you have the room for more storage (external flash takes PCB area, with processor internal-flash a 'bigger' part is often physically bigger too) the extra hardware cost is a deal-breaker.

Not necessarily.
Many of those did sink like a rock.
Not, unlike what people usually believed, because they were launched too far from shore, though, The probable reason is because the strong current off the Normandy beach swept them to the side but the crews kept aiming for a specific point on shore, meaning they eventually ended up too far side-on to the waves, pressure from which then collapsed the floatation screen.

Speaking to Forbes, he confessed: "No one asked for smartness, for the smart home."
No, no one sat at home and pleaded: "Why can't I draw my drapes by tapping my phone without getting up?”
Well, no, they probably didn’t. But a hundred years ago, nobody sat at home and pleaded: “Why can’t I turn up the heating to a comfortable temperature and have it stay like that?”
One of the things that we've been spending a lot of time on is how do we rethink the privacy model.
How about not collecting and cross-referencing information unless it’s clearly necessary for the service being supplied, and discarding it when it’s no longer needed? No, wait, that would be too simple and not profitable.

Looks like it is a slow news day on flandersnews.be (no truly odd B*****n news items for now) so they went on to research obvious things:

@JBert: obvious to us, but not necessarily for non-technical people. For example, the article says some recordings occurred even when the persons were not interacting with the device. I bet most users of these things think they don't record if you don't say "OK Google" first.

Have you ever actually managed to get different pictures using the HDR mode of your phone? I regularly try when I'm taking pictures like this one, and the result is always almost identical to a non-HDR picture. Either there is a trick to HDR that is more than just enabling the mode, or... well, I guess that has to be it?

Yeah, no, I've never gotten an HDR photo that didn't look exactly like the preview.

That depends — this was in Sweden, and for all we know, it’s (or was, more likely) perfectly legal there to film people.
-
@remi said in Internet of shit:

Yes. I like photographing clouds if I see interesting ones, and turning on HDR mode results in obvious changes in colour, glare, etc. It’s especially obvious when you’re taking a picture against the sun:
Normal on the left (or at the top, I suppose, depending on your window width), HDR on the right (or below).
-
-
@Gurth Yeah, like @Tsaukpaetra said, it might be obvious if you're really into photography, but honestly, I don't see that much difference between the two. I had to zoom out so that I could see the two pictures on the same screen (without scrolling), otherwise I really couldn't see anything. And even then... sure, I guess they're slightly different, but nothing similar to any HDR example in countless Google results...
-
@Tsaukpaetra @remi I think you guys need to adjust your screens or your eyes.
The difference is pretty obvious to me, specially the clouds "around" to the sun.
-
@Zecc said in Internet of shit:

Well, that's the thing, isn't it? If the difference cannot really be noticed without paying some specific attention to it, or having a properly calibrated screen (who has???), then it might be a excellent tool for professional photographers, but as far as Joe Random User is concerned, it's useless.

Yes, when I manage to get the two pictures side-by-side I can see some difference. But it's not huge, and in practice it's likely that the difference would be smaller than, say, if I took the same picture twice but told my phone to focus (and calibrate luminosity etc.) on two different areas, or framed it slightly differently so that there is naturally more or less sky etc. Meaning that, practically speaking, when I'm casually snapping something, switching to HDR will not produce a larger difference than any other change I can do much more easily (without having to find the HDR mode, turn it on, then off again afterwards). So for all intensive porpoises, it's useless.
(if I want to take technically good pictures, I'm not bothering with a phone anyway, I use a DSLR that will 9 times out of 10 give me a better technical quality whatever I do...)
-
@Zecc said in Internet of shit:

Sorry, internal auto-calibration routines do not have any relevant routines to alter the result. And I don't have ready access to the proper maintenance equipment needed to adjust settings either.
-
@remi said in Internet of shit:
having a properly calibrated screen (who has???)
It is enough to have your monitor brightness and contrast in the range where dark shades don't merge to uniform black and light shads don't merge to uniform white. That's not a difficult requirement, though I do admit my monitors at work arrived pre-set to eye-burning 100% brightness in which all light shades did merge to uniform white. But it was rather obvious it is excessively bright.
-
They look pretty similar to me, but I'm using a really old LCD screen with a very weak backlight that I never replaced because it still works well enough that I don't care.

Well yeah if you look at it on a black and white 3" portable TV you might not be able to tell the difference. But you might get it printed on photo paper, or look at it on a nice screen, it'll be better if you have a better picture.

That's how HDR works on a phone, except instead of taking two (or more) pictures with different settings at human speeds where there are a few seconds between each shot, the device takes the pictures in rapid fire succession, then does Magic™ to put them together into a nice looking HDR photo.
e: Also, on my work computer (standard LCD screen) I could immediately tell the difference in the cloud picture

Thanks for rephrasing what I wrote (the quote above), I guess?
@remi said in Internet of shit:

That's how HDR works on a phone
I know how it works, and I even did it manually a couple of times before it was done automatically by the cameras, but that's not the point. I don't care that I can manually do everything that my phone does when I select fancy options. I do, however, care whether those fancy options are actually useful in my common use, or not. In that case, my personal experience (and clearly that of other people as well) is that this option is not useful, in part because it's impact on the result is much smaller than many other things I can change more easily (or that impact the final picture, whether I want it or not).
My original question was basically "is this normal or am I doing something wrong", and clearly I can see from how the discussion goes that yes, this is normal and therefore HDR is indeed useless to me.
Again, to be perfectly clear: HDR is a very nice photographing technique. In the hands of a professional, or an artist, it can produce stunning results that cannot be achieved otherwise (or that would be very difficult). I'm not complaining for one second that this mode exists on my phone, there are tons of other features that I don't use but that other people might.
