When I got my S5, I got one of these:
It's..... so.... big.... though! ()
To be fair, maybe it's worse for my phone (Nexus 6p). But holy shit that wouldn't even fit in my pocket. There's making a phone too thin, then there's that!

My nexus 7 fits in the pockets of most of my trousers. I doubt a 5-6" phone at any thickness that's still possible to hold would strain them

Yeah but it weighs nearly a pound and it's 3 times as wide! I mean, sure I could fit it in some of my pants, but shorts and stuff would be right out!

I'm kinda lost here. Why do people want thinner phones ? I have an okayish thin phone and I don't see any reason why I would need an even thinner phone. What the fuck is going on ?
You are now officially an old fucker. Welcome to the club!
-
This mornings San Jose Mercury News had a front page article PRAISING Apple's innovation in "finally" getting rid of the wires! Fuck, even they've drunk the punch.

So they can bend them and then have an excuse to buy a new one? I really don't know… If a phone is too thin for a 3.5mm audio plug, I sure as hell don't trust it.

Regardless of what people have said upthread, Windows is steadily becoming a better phone OS (And it was pretty great already, honestly). Pity about the market share. Meanwhile Apple is being user-hostile as always and developers are starting to realize that there are only two android devices worth supporting anymore. It's all very fascinating.

Who cares about market share, i.e., having any users? You can have a great OS!

http://www.motorola.com/us/products/moto-z-play
You can even connect an additional battery to the back of the phone. Unfortunately, it only supports BT 4.0, otherwise I would have already ordered one.
(Why, Motorola, why??? There's no excuse for releasing an LTE smartphone with BT 4.0 in 2016! The whole fucking point of BT 4.1, which has been around for 3(!!) years, is to make sure BT and LTE don't interfere with each other.)
-
@asdf But that one has no headphone connector.
Wait, Z play != Z without play in such a major way?
WTF MOTOROLA!!I thought "play" was just something like "Google Play Edition" which I remember existing in the past.
-
@aliceif It does. (This is the Moto Z Play, not the Moto Z, which is too thin.)
There are even more differences: Way bigger battery, dual SIM, …
-
@aliceif said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:
Huh what?
Seriously. People are getting tired of supporting anything but the Nexus line and whatever Samsung's best is at any given moment. If anything else works, it's by luck anyway at this point, since they're probably running a 5yo version of the OS.
@dkf said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

The thing is, it doesn't have many users because it doesn't have many users. It's not any fault of the system, and hasn't been for some time. Most major apps are available, and more as time goes on.
-
@Magus Windows Phone 8 was already the best one at the time and the rest have been steadily taking all its features while advertising them as revolutionary.
In the meantime, Microsoft has been fucking itself over as hard as it can and worsening the phone experience. As an example, the keyboard Swype thing seems to get worse every month, and doesn't even automatically capitalise 'i' any more :(
-
@asdf Seems like a good upgrade candidate from my current Moto X. Does Expandable Storage mean it has an SD slot, or are they cheating and saying "you can plug a USB storage drive into it"?
-
@Yamikuronue Nope, it has an SD slot.
The US version only supports 1 SIM card, though (in case you want a dual SIM phone).
-
@asdf I'm fine with one SIM, but I sorely miss the SD slot on my current phone. Thanks!
-
@coldandtired said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

What? It still does for me... In fact it always writes "It's" instead of "it's" to the point where it annoys me... but the swype has been improving for me.
-
@Yamikuronue Do you own a smart watch, by any chance? Because I'd love to know how well BT 4.0 works in combination with LTE. It's the only thing keeping me from buying this phone.
-
@asdf I don't :( Closest I have is a fitbit
-
@Yamikuronue Hm, if you actually upgrade, any information on the quality of Bluetooth connection would be appreciated. :) The unstable BT connection with my smart watch is one of the biggest problems with my current phone. (I don't want to charge my watch more than once a week, goddammit, and I sure as hell don't want to see notifications with a 10 second delay.)
Since the Moto G2 also doesn't get security updates anymore, it's definitely time to upgrade my phone.

Yes, keep telling yourself that, but I have an 18 month old LG G4 that disagrees with you. It's currently running Marshmallow, and I haven't yet checked to see if it will get Nougat. Though since the G3 got Marshmallow after the G5's release, I'd say that there's a decent chance the G4 will get Nougat.
Then there's the phones that HTC has said will be getting Nougat, and Motorola, and Sony, and … I've personally had HTC, Samsung, and LG phones and I've never had an issue with an app not working on my phone because the phone manufacturers never change the underlying OS so drastically as to endanger the app ecosystem. If they did, they would essentially make their phone unmarketable.

No, apps designed for Nexus/Samsung phones work on like 90% of Android devices, especially flagships from the major manufacturers. The ones they don't work on are the shit-grade $30 prepaid phones with xxldpi screens running Android 2.3
-
@abarker So, as long as you stick to the most popular brands, there's a good chance you'll get updates. Great!
Typically it's the carriers who ruin things, though, and there are thousands of phones that never get a single update.
Again, many developers are taking the position now that you only need to test on a galaxy and a nexus, and anything else that works is a bonus. Because that makes more sense than testing thousands of different phones.
And while you would never buy one of the lesser brands, they sell really well.
-

Unless you get a $30 phone with Gingerbread in 2016. In which case, I can't really help you.

I <3 my Pebble Time. The ability to delete annoying emails with two button presses (without taking my phone out) alone was worth it.
-
@aliceif said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:
Meanwhile, LG unveiled a phone with
- micro SD slot
- removable back cover
- replacable battery
- USB-C
- 3.5mm headphone connector
- an up-to-date CPU
- Android 7.0
which will forever be overlooked.
I'd buy one if I weren't holding a Nexus 6P.
-
@sloosecannon said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

Because no apps work on them.Then why do a thousand new ones keep coming out? Seriously, I get that some phones are better. You're making the point that because there are good ones, the bad ones are irrelevant: I disagree. The bad ones are still produced in massive numbers, and have a market (or else they wouldn't be made).
-
@Magus said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

The solution is simple: Don't ever buy a phone from your carrier!
-
@asdf Again with the advice to people who know better. Well done.
Do most people know that? No? Then what's the relevance, when I'm talking about the affect this all has on normal people?
-

Because there are still plenty of people who don't care so much about the apps. They buy the cheap smart phones because all you want is a phone to make calls and maybe text, and these days it may be easier to find a cheap smart phone than a flip phone – especially if you're going into your local TMobile or AT&T store.

@aliceif ?
I think even Verizon, the most evil of all, can activate unlocked phones.
-
@Magus Don't you have bullshit like carrier exclusive phones?
-
@aliceif said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

Ah, yes, but usually they're variants: Like my Icon was a 'Verizon Exclusive' that isn't actually different from the 930 and 929 apart from looks.
-

Kinda. If they support vzn's LTE and CDMA bands. And if you have an already-activated SIM. And if the IMEI is on the whitelist.

The number of sales of high-end phones is significantly higher than the sales of those ones - this may also be due to carriers subsidizing the cost, but you'll find a lot more people running last year's flagship than you will run in to Samsung Amaze Desire 4G Snowflake Edition.
It used to be worse - there were a lot of the crappy Gingerbread phones before 4.4 - but Google made a few changes to the manufacturer agreement and made 4.4 compatible with low-end hardware so it's much better now.

@PJH
Wow:
I tried it out, put it in my pocket, and sure as hell it gave me a nice bulge
...
I slapped it on my phone and charged it up
(there's nothing like the feeling of a fully juiced up bulge in your pocket to give you all the confidence you need to get whatever u gotta get done when u leave the house)...!
So after 12 hours of charging i took it on its maiden voyage out to the club
From the moment I walked in the club I sensed that everyone was staring at me, wondering "what in god's name does that man have in his pants that could give him such a confident stride?!"
That night i took hundreds of selfies, made dozens of phone calls, sent hundreds of nudie pics and by the time 2 am rolled by i still had 95% battery.
At exactly 2:35 was when history was made.!!!!
But then I remembered about the juiced up bulge in my pocket, with it I was unstoppable.
I reached into my pants and with a heroic countenance pulled out my mighty juiced up brick, I jammed it in a spare sock and ran at the hooligan swinging it like a madman all the while yelling out a war cry consisting of 3 short bursts with one long that resonated through the air alerting everyone of my eminent heroism.... Can't... hold on....
The hooligan was massive and put up a good fight but in the end neither he nor the woman he was trying to rob were a match for the "ZeroLemon samsung s5 7500 mah extended battery case".
I shortly blacked out after this...(huff.. puff..)
But my new girlfriend has a large rump, and my phone still has 96% battery.
Thanks Zero lemon,
Your the best.Damn. Massive blue-balls right now!
