One of my go-to checks for historical maps of Europe is the shape of the Dutch coastline. This one checks out.

Claiming that word X in the original language doesn't really mean word Y in a modern language seems to be a popular ploy at discrediting the Bible.
It also seems to be a popular ploy at "no, this horrible thing the bible says is not meant the way it says it in all popular translations used everywhere."
Also, it's less discrediting the Bible and more discrediting the made up legends from after the Bible was already written. See: Jesus tripping over exactly three times while carrying the σταυρὸς and the identities of people who helped him each time - an important part of Way of the Cross celebration in Catholic churches in Poland.

Anarchy Online used to have billboards, with real-life advertisement on them.
So, this is just a logical progress.Next-step: targeted advertising as part of the in-game loot.

I am afraid that this is already a thing in mobile gaming

@Gąska You'll get no argument from me on that account. One of the things on which I disagree with the Catholic church is that I (and other Protestants) think they put too much emphasis on traditions that have no basis in Scripture and that in some cases fly in the face of common sense, e.g., the tradition that Mary remained a virgin her entire life. Scripture tells us she had other children and does not suggest that there was anything special about those other children, i.e., that they were divinely conceived. If I were Joseph, I'd be rather irked if my wife continued having children that I knew I wasn't fathering because I wasn't getting any marital benefits.

Nowadays they'd be on Jerry Springer (if that's still a thing) with that story.

A long time ago I played one MMO where they've had ads on every loading screen (and there was a loading screen every 15 minutes or so) - as an alternative to premium account business model. And I was fine with that. But the game was shut down within a year or two from launch due to lack of profits. I was sad because it was very fun game and I've only got to play it for a month.

You are of 'treat every word in Bible literally' denomination?

@MrL No, more "some of it is obviously figurative or symbolic, but anything that can reasonably be taken literally should be taken literally".
If this sub-thread is to continue, it should probably be taken to either the Garage or, preferably to me, the Salon, which has a suitable topic in it.

Sensible approach, IMO.

I don't think I have anything to contribute

Also . . . . "We seriously believe that you'll never use any program other than ours, so, we can make the UI completely different from every other Windows program every created."
And the always great… “We seriously believe that you will never want to communicate with anyone using a program other than ours, so we'll mangle all messages in ways that no other email client can make any sort of sense of.”
I'm young enough to have never encountered this problem. And I'm not that young.
The Mercy of Late Birth is kind of a technical term in German.
Is this a parallel to the notion of, "sure this time in history seems the most fraught - you're in it"?

Ah, that explains the erosion of reasoning.

It helps if you realize that virgin birth is not a canonical claim, and the conception of Mary, not Christ, is held as the Immaculate.

Windows has apparently installed another update on my mom's computer and after that Edge was set to the default browser, so Firefox asked to be set to default again. At least it helpfully opened the correct dialog where to do that (I didn't try but I assume finding it in the absolute mess that is the settings app would have been annoying).
Select Firefox to default again and it asks "whoa there buddy, try Edge first!!1!".
The same shit as always. How can they still get away with this? Apparently the billion dollar fines of the EU weren't enough, we need more of them. And fuck you @blakeyrat for suggesting otherwise.

Danganronpa spoilers
This game has a character who's a super skilled programmer. And a girl. At one point the game straight up says how weird it is for a girl to be a programmer. As if that wasn't sexist enough, here comes the plot twist: turns out it's actually a boy. And that earlier scene is meant as foreshadowing. The player is supposed to figure out that since they're a programmer, they cannot possibly be a girl.
I like Japanese culture but they could really tone down with the sexism.
Also, the super strong girl doesn't just have man-like muscles, she also has man-like face. One does not simply get ripped and remain feminine.
-

It is strange, nothing sexist about noticing it.
-
@MrL gender stereotypes are considered pretty sexist nowadays, especially job-related ones. In the western world, that is.

@MrL look. I wouldn't really have a problem with that if it wasn't used as a setup of "a female programmer? This can't be, something's not right there... hey look, something wasn't right!"
-
@MrL look. I wouldn't really have a problem with that if it wasn't used as a setup of "a female programmer? This can't be, something's not right there... hey look, something wasn't right!"
They should film a real story from my life: "a female programmer? This can't be, something's not right there... hey look, she's terrible and barely a code monkey, something wasn't right!"
But on a serious note, I worked with great female programmers, so they exist. But they are rare - just a fact of life.
-
On a related note, our team had a team lunch at a restaurant a month or two ago, where we saw each other for the first time in a year. Across from us they put together a few tables for a group of about 30 people. There were exactly 2 females at that table, and the others all looked like stereotypical programmers, so we assumed it was some IT company having a company lunch. One of the females at our table immediately said, probably correctly, that the 2 females were likely the Project Managers of the company.

reality is considered offensive by soy cucks.
Would those great female programmers you've worked with have been offended if you had told them "you must be a man"? Would you consider it offensive?
