WTFs of my week Yes, plural.
This seems to be a week made for galore.
Back in August my parents had problems with their DSL connectivity. Due to being out in the boondocks, DSL is all the wired goodness they can get (and barely so). But the Telekom recently upsold them on a hybrid router which supposedly does DLS+LTE. Well, they're now paying less for the same service so that's something at least.
But they're still getting only 6 Mbit/s - and if I put my iPhone next to the router, disable wifi and do a speedtest solely over LTE, my iPhone gets 6 Mbit/s.So, either DSL is not working or LTE is not working or the router is shit at both. Plus, sometimes it falls down to a mere 1 Mbit/s which is only solvable by multiple router resets.
So, back in August I called the tech support which did a song and dance and finally told me that they'd send my parents a new router. My parents were going on holiday however (in a Covid compatible way, mind!) and so we agreed to have the new router sent to us at the beginning of October.
Naturally, no router at the beginning of October. So I called them again, was greeted with "The waiting time is 20 minutes. Can we call you back in the next two hours?" Which I said yes to. After precisely 2 hours the callback arrived.
Of course I was nowhere near a PC at that moment and had not memorized my parents' customer ID. So it took a bit of rummaging which might have prompted the agent to simply hang up after two minutes. I do not precisely know but the line simply went to disconnected. And our landline is reliable.
Waited a bit - in case of them calling again? Of course not!So, called them again and this time went into the 16 minute queue. Asked the agent about the supposed shipment. "What shipment?" - "The one which is supposed to solve our connectivity problems." - "But at the moment your line is fine?!?" Just as I began to explain how this is an intermittent problem (and I was courteous, really!) the agent obviously resented me not adhering to his script, called me "uncooperative" and muted the line. No, he did not hang up - that I had to do myself. One minute later I received an SMS "We closed your ticket from August as resolved!"
Third call, this time I made it a point to have the agent spell his name. Though he was way more friendly. He also seemed more capable. He traced the problem back to a nonfunctional LTE mast and wondered why in the hell no one had recognized that they were having a major malfunction there. He also said that a recent firmware update might have solved the other problem. So, in that regard, wait and see.
I purchased the "Duet" app sometime back (before Sidecar) which allows you to turn your iPad into a second screen - even for a Windows machine! Though I didn't use it as much as it rendered the dGPU of my Surface Book nonfunctional.
Recently took a look into it once more and they solved the dGPU problem. What really caught my eye was their "Air" functionality, though, which supposedly gets rid of the wired requirement - you can connect to the iPad wirelessly. And still have it work as a touch/drawing device.
I mean, streaming is one thing. But two-way streaming with touch support? Sign me up!They've got a "one week trial" which I signed up for through my iPad. Then I had to create an account for "easy discovery of devices on an account". Fine.
However, account creation relies on a confirmation email which times out after a while (two minutes). When said email arrives only after 30 minutes, you can see the problem. Oh well, got that done.
Logged into the same account on my Surface Book aaaand ... it's not the same account. Oh, the email address is the same. The password is the same. But on the iPad I can see only the iPad under devices and the trial subscription. On my Book I only see the book and no trial subscription. And of course, the wireless connection does not work. (Wired works fine)
I'm currently writing the stuff required for my application to two jobs related to hybrid learning. All applications have to go through a digital portal.
First of all, they recently moved all the cheese and forgot to refresh some of the links in this portal which at some points leads to you finding yourself at the beginning again. Then, if you have finally found the jobs you want to apply to, you then have to move them into a "reminder stash".
However, while this stash is coupled to your account, it's also ephemeral. Close the browser, lose the stash. If you want to apply to a job you then have to go to your stash and click "apply for this job".The reasoning for the existance of this stash eludes me.
Next, you then get an overview of the jobs you'd like to apply to. This does not include the actual job title, only your official role title. Which makes it fun if the various jobs have the same role title. Thankfully, I only had two of them.
So I clicked on "update my portfolio" and it updated. Refreshed the page for good measure. Everything was fine.
Closed the browser and went back to it one hour later - no job applications in sight. The stupid system had reset everything to "start".
I've contacted their tech department because if they do not fix this, they'd get serious legal troubles (e.g. from me) because their recruitment procedure is faulty.

Wait, no, it was some cheese.
That doesn't seem right, do I need to give special permissions to guest or something?
You need to give them some permissions:

Sooo "Find Category",
Just a thought: is there maybe some checkbox for "functioning search" that we haven't enabled?

Don't worry, this is only temporary.
-
@Zerosquare The context implies it works as a space heater, which it can (possibly) do quite well even if it does not work at all as a computer.
-
Given @Tsaukpaetra's luck with hardware, I wouldn't be surprised if his PC started generating cold instead of heat one day.

I would be cool with that.

@Rhywden Regarding the application portal: I just got the answer "Can't you read the error message?"
Nice.
Keep in mind that nowhere does it state that you have to fill out everything in one go (I'm not even sure why there's a button for updating your application if it's ephemeral anyway), hell it even states: "If you made updates make sure to click on 'Update' to save your changes".
They were able to explicitly state the ephemeral nature of the "reminder stash" though.
Also: If you have to fill out everything in one go, why on Earth are my entries from my last application (back in March) still there?
Also, the error message? You see that message right from the start: "Please upload your concept paper and your letter of motivation" - the button "update" is never greyed out which essentially makes it a NOOP.
Obviously some people never heard of UX/UI design.

Try sending them your application for an UI/UX position

Naw, I'm thinking of going into politics and making "Give company X the boot" my platform.
Would give me 100% of votes among public servants, teachers and anyone else who has to deal with them.
-
@Rhywden I like the fact that X is a free variable. I support your platform on that basis.

Seems like the place where it's concatenating feature flags for diagnostic purposes. Some of those variables / constants might be empty strings, I guess?
I have read about development strategies where you use feature flags to keep all main development on a single branch, but of course it's hard to say if that's what's going on here.
Either way, it's weird that you got multiple feature flags and a second set of "application" flags. Hopefully those "applications" are only used to change some branding, but if you're really unlucky then I could see how it gets worse. If somebody introduced it as a second level above feature flags then "featureA" in app A might be different from "featureA" in app B.

No, it looks like a denormalized table DTO with a ton of columns.

WTF: Microsoft l10n.
The button is labeled "Updatedefinitionen", which means "definitions of (the/an) update". That's slightly weird because usually buttons represent actions, so they're labeled with verbs, not nouns. The label makes it sound like the button would take you to a list of definitions, like a link.
What happened here is that there was an English button labeled "Update definitions" (intended to be read as a command: go and update the definitions), but the translator thought it was a compound noun and translated it accordingly, without taking context into account. A correct translation would be "Definitionen aktualisieren" ("aktualisieren" being a verb meaning "to update").
You can even see traces of this in the "Tipp" paragraph at the bottom:
Zudem können Sie sie jederzeit manuell aktualisieren, indem Sie auf "Aktualisieren" klicken.
English: In addition you can update them manually at any time by clicking on "Aktualisieren" [= Update].
Of course there is no "Aktualisieren" on the actual button, making the whole thing even more confusing.
In conclusion, Microsoft translates interface elements not just without paying attention to the context they appear in, but without even making sure they are consistent with each other on a single screen.

Or maybe they're just idiots who never tested their app at all. Which wouldn't really surprise me.

WTF: NodeBB l10n.
VOR 2 MONATEN LATER
Well, "vor 2 Monaten" is German for "2 months ago". The word "later" does not exist in German; it's just left untranslated from English.
Taken together that means German visitors see time skips as e.g. "2 months ago [later]" with the latter being in the wrong language. The correct translation would have been "2 Monate später".

Oddly it seems not only has it been translated, but it was translated a while ago. I guess we don't have an updated version.

Ah so we broke something that works out of the box?
I guess that's appropes for here.

@loopback0 I'm actually trying to figure out how those language strings ("%1 earlier" and "%1 later" in en-US) get used, because the version we use for e.g. post timestamps uses
prefix/suffix
Ago/FromNow
for its strings:
-
@hungrier The necro banner, not the timestamp.
it uses different strings.
-
@loopback0 Yes. Our necropost banner comes from
plugins/nodebb-plugin-tdwtf-customizations/necro.js
, which uses$.timeago
in the way I described. Apparently NodeBB has its own native necropost feature now that uses those other strings, but we're not using that one.
-
Looking at their code, it bypasses the prefix/suffix strings entirely and just uses the time portion, then feeds it into NodeBB's localized template string:
-
@hungrier The official one also messes with the suffixes by setting them all to blank before using $.timeago.inWords and then setting them back.
edit:
-
@loopback0 I guess now I can update my PR on our necropost plugin to incorporate that technique, or a variation on it
-
@hungrier
All commit messages for that plugin are "GODDAMMIT FBMAC", right?
-
@loopback0 I guess now I can update my PR on our necropost plugin to incorporate that technique, or a variation on it
Then submit our version as a PR upstream?

("aktualisieren" being a verb meaning "to update")
I would have said it was a verb meaning "make it an actuality" aka actualize.
-
@Tsaukpaetra The words are clearly related, but there is a distinct shift in meaning. You can use ‘actual’ in the sense of ‘current’ as opposed to ‘previous’ and ‘actualize’ in the sense of update in English, but it is unusual. More common is ‘actual’ as opposed to ‘virtual’, ‘predicted’, ‘calculated’ etc. But in German that ‘aktualisieren’ means specifically update.
