:wtf: How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread)
-
My $2 is on... @mpalmer's little adjustments to make things nice and purty with Roboto leaked over and are effecting the centering of the old better font. Because, you know, testing coding to make sure that wasn't going to happen is obviously not important.
LOL:

But it's his bug for shipping buggy IM when IM says "fix released"...
... They're about to drop Docker support, aren't they?
-
They're about to drop Docker support, aren't they?
Really? I thought they were firmly wedded to docker. When did this change? Sounds like some juicy fail.d reading. Got a link?
-
As a user who is not forum-savvy, I preferred if they were called
untrack all
anddismiss all
that way they would not need to define what athread
is and how it is different fromposts
.
I also prefer my variables with descriptive and distinguishable names and {untrack_all
,dismiss_all
} looks more separated than {dismiss_all_threads
,dismiss_all_posts
}.
I do not know the role Jeff plays in his company (you bunch here seem to be more intimately familiar) but seeing his posts in meta.d whenever you post one, it seems a micromanager. Like in the meta.d thread about this issue, the employee just saysOkay, done
to his boss. The problem with this approach is that the customer of employee is his boss, he only has to support his boss and keep him happy.
-
It hasn't changed yet. I believe it might since says that bugs in software he includes in the box aren't his bugs, even though the bug is fixed upstream and he's the one shipping the buggy version.
Granted, the fix has only been out for two weeks, but Discourse's CI system should have picked up on it by now. Him telling people to fuck off to ImageMagick when they've already fixed it and he should have the fix already is extremely tonedeaf. And the only reason he'd ignore problems in his One True Deployment System is if he didn't intend to use it anymore.
Either that or he only reads the first sentence of any other DiscoDev's post and treats the rest as "blah blah blah"...
TL;DR: When he says a Discourse Docker bug is not the Discourse Dev's bug...
-
Discourse's CI system
HA HA HA

HE HE HE
Either that or he only reads
HO HO HO
Oh, wait, you're serious?
-
@wood doesn't read what other posts because he already knows what they should've have posted anyway. Sometimes he is nice enough to edit their posts for them to say what they should have meant.
Filed under: I'd quote your last paragraph, but I am on a WP and it's a day of the week that ends in a "y," so I cannot quote.

Hmmmmm, is it worth going for the Ban Badge with something like "it's too bad no one has invented a package deployment system to keep all software installed on a server to a specified version. I might go invent one, what would be a good name... is Docker taken?"
-
You're a fucking mug, is what you are. Sitepoint are a commercial outfit. You're spending your personal time making their product better, making them more profitable, with no benefit other than "making the rest of the personal time you're sinking into their business less hellish". Jeffco are a commercial outfit. Again, you're spending your personal time making their product better.
Giving time to open source projects I can understand, even if (for example) fixing a driver for linux indirectly benefits RedHat. But directly sinking your time and effort into someone else's business is just plain stupid.
Walk the fuck away, man.

Good point. Words like, "Mark as read" would make sense to anyone who uses email.

That's not really a new thing, though.

Yeah, he should have said something like, "This is an ImageMagick bug that's fixed upstream. We'll look into upgrading." I don't have a problem with not allowing dependencies to automatically update. That can cause a lot of problems.
Either that or he only reads the first sentence of any other DiscoDev's post and treats the rest as "blah blah blah"...

What do you get out of it?
What even is "site point?" It points at sites, I guess?
Free access to their books, content, their Learnable System (which is now called Sitepoint Premium). I could also write articles (and get paid for them) with little obstruction, if I had any desire to.

^ See above, I do get things out of it, including random swag from time to time, it would be similar to providing a site with stories of unbelievable situations that happened to them in the technological workforce, or screenshots of crazy error messages, that the site will run with ads to profit from.
I know it is far fetched, but right now the time I put in, to the items I get in return, are still worth it, when that balance changes, that's when I'll have to reconsider my involvement.
Plus, it doesn't even impact my full time job and I can do these things at my full time job (it is encouraged... so win on both -- since I still get free access to a library of books, videos, free swag, etc.).

Free access to their books,
Who is "they"? DC Comics? You can read Hawkman for free?

You're bad at explaining things.
Gimme some Hawkman.

Or is it that you are simply not good a piecing together clues/information from various sources?

Right but I don't know what Sitepoint is is the point.
Pro-tip: if someone asks you what a donkey is, don't give a reply that FIRST REQUIRES KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT A DONKEY IS.

Right but I don't know what Sitepoint is is the point.
Funny, there is this thing called Google, Bing, Yahoo, Duck Duck Go, if you are into that sort of thing, that really helps you figure out what something is. In fact, you don't even have to visit those places, just highlight the unfamiliar word, right-click and choose the Search for "..." option. It truly is amazing! Or just put .com after the word (maybe unsafe for certain words, but Sitepoint should be okay ;) )
Pro-tip: if someone asks you what a donkey is, don't give a reply that FIRST REQUIRES KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT A DONKEY IS.
Ahh see, this is where things went wrong, you feel like I'm telling you required knowledge is necessary, whereas, I simply don't condone spoon feeding people answers that can easily be found with just 1% of their implied potential.
Filed under: Explanations? Really those are necessary in this day in age?

I like Hawkman.

What do those words even mean? Just a bunch of jargon. Why would we put giant, confusing buttons filled with jargon anywhere in Discourse?
instead, there can be one simple button, which teaches you the difference Just In Time when you need to know.

No one has commented on the fact that you cannot see the code until you click though

Why randomly right justify? Why remove category color entirely? Why remove post count (and thus also any possible notification of new and unread) entirely? Why make categories look like tags? Are we in total bikeshed mode now? If so then I'm out of here, because this topic is now a complete waste of time.

We seem to have it whitelisted by default, but not the click to play.

That quote is hilarious because the guy was trying to address the actual problem of not hitting uses with a wall of text. Instead of some ideological thing about information porn or whatever.

To get click to play on prior ones, you have to rebake the post. Just an FYI
-
It looked way too confusing to them, notifications made no sense and they didn't understand why they had to use them, what was wrong with just firing off emails and copying the entire group, etc.
Several complaints were about the fact that they thought using @ to mention people was confusing and they never would remember to do it. I really would like to have a way to force all new members, even if they join through an invite link, to enter their full name.
I love how the users who have done usability studies, even informally, are being ignored, because Jeff just knows what everyone's thinking all the time.

Actually, it makes sense in context.

Alex pays the contributors. You're a chump.
-
Other than, if I did contribute articles.... I'd get paid... so same thing right? Highly doubt he pays those who moderate here (unless they too write/edit/review articles). Maybe he does.. and then oh well.

He tried to pay Boomzilla, but he only accepts Confederate States dollars.

You would be correct, good sir.
That's because you're in a third world country. Free labor is just the cultural norm there. Or that we expect from there. Or impose on there. Whatever.
Actual modes from real countries get paid.
