Bottom of that is a movie showing two clicks.

I could have sworn dicksource did this when we were using it:
One-click quoting, something which every other platform can do, is three-click process in Discourse. My users read a post, then want to have a “quote” button that loads the quote in a composer, simple. Yes Discourse can “quote” but it takes a few clicks and my users did NOT like this at all.
But, representative quote from someone who's faith still burns brightly:
A blunt ‘quote all’ is just going to result in unnecessarily poor use of screen real-estate and storage.
That also doesn’t help at all with the fact that large threads become extremely slow and may crash, or the fact that having a single page with thousands of posts is just an eyesore.
Some things never change.
: As for the 502 errors, it sounds like the server was under-powered for the database size?
Well, duh. Everyone should know by now that you need a massive server to run a forum.
Another True Believer appears!
Topics of 20,000 posts are a big ball-ache for members of online communities IMO. If a forum has developed a topic with 20,000 posts, it means the forum has become a chatroom. And that’s not good, given that forums are intended for long-term, organised content, as opposed to transient feed-like chatter.
Oh, god, this just pisses me off:
Why would you need to quote that much? That’s a bit of an anti-pattern in a community.
Only if you don't value communicating, Jeff.

He never actually clicks "Quote"…
Also wow, Discourse is completely broken without JS. What's new?

Well, the best guarantee for civilised discourse is to have no discourse at all!

Finally, revenue. I’ve run Adsense on my community for years and it’s helped offset the server and time costs. Since switching to Discourse my revenue instantly plummeted, down 90%. I gave it a month, I even used AdManager to try to improve things, but nothing was improving and it was burning a hole in my pocket. Be it Ads not showing, impressions plummeting or whatever, it couldn’t go on.
Probably turned off email notifications.

I like this example of an unreasonably large topic:
When topics are so huge that the scrolling gets flaky, I don’t generally find the replies loaded to be of huge consequence. Topics that balloon to 100-200 replies aren’t really meant to be read from the first reply to the last.

Actually, now that I think of it, without JS Discourse falls backs on standard pagination instead of inifiniscroll. So you could argue it's actually less broken without JS.

And all that stuff about it crapping out when people try to post becomes a total non-issue!

@DoctorJones Jeff must have had a stroke when he read this:
when topics can get to over 10,000 posts in two weeks,
Even the likes thread didn't grow that fast.

@DoctorJones
It would be good to hear server stats because it sounds like the server was underpowered for a community of this size.Only on Discourse, Jeff. The old software and new software managed. Forums aren't supposed to need server farms to run.

@DoctorJones I don't think I'd last long on the Discourse forum. It sounds like their answer to everything is "you don't need..."
I hate infinite scroll and anything that requires highlighting text (like quotes without a quote button) is real pain in the ass on mobile.
-
How long does it take to get category-specific moderation supported by Modern™ forum software?
I'm glad you asked. 4.5 years.

Remember this: virtually all the stuff that spends so much effort on is something that could be done trivally by just letting the browser do what it normally does. It's just got to be reinvented with vast quantities of JS and Ruby and CDNs and SQL servers used NoSQL stores and vice versa and whatever other craziness they've stuffed in there. I must've missed something!
-
Also that links to the relevant announcement...
In which a user asks about how Twatter links don't onebox in the moderation queue.
Presumably this would make it too easy to review the content so didn't meet Jeffproval. The response? Well, here's that pesky pipeline again.
The oneboxes are not showing up because our “cooked” helper does not go that deep into our rendering pipeline.
Rendering pipeline? FFS that sounds like something Pixar would need, not a forum.
edit: There are other amusing WTFs in that topic but I'm not spoiling them all.
