http://fusion.net/story/320747/gender-masked-for-tech-job-interviews/
FTFA:
“Contrary to what we expected (and probably contrary to what you expected as well!), masking gender had no effect on interview performance with respect to any of the scoring criteria (would advance to next round, technical ability, problem solving ability). If anything, we started to notice some trends in the opposite direction of what we expected: for technical ability, it appeared that men who were modulated to sound like women did a bit better than unmodulated men and that women who were modulated to sound like men did a bit worse than unmodulated women.”
So, to paraphrase, it made no difference, except where it had the opposite effect to what they
expecteddesired?IOW, it did make a difference.
And these are the people running the 'experiment'?
Later on:
Lerner dug into her data and came up with her own guess for the cause of the surprising results [...] “Once you factor out interview data from both men and women who quit after one or two bad interviews,” she writes, “the disparity goes away entirely.”
IOW, once you massage the figures, the differences disappear. Colour me surprised.

@DogsB, but that was back in 2011.....
(Liked the
OPTION_NOT_FOUND
on the poll there btw):.. surely it was a mistake and was rectified soon after..
Oh, no - wait! They actually try to justify this bollocks:
Water bottles are BANNED from claiming to solve dehydration under an oddball EU rule
True but justified. That is because drinking water, whether from a tap or a bottle, is not enough to treat dehydration. That is why hospitals put dehydrated people on drips. There is an EU system – necessary in a borderless single market – where advertisers have to provide evidence for claims they want to make about the health benefits of products. On an issue like this, decisions are based on scientific advice. Experts – including in the Guardian here – demolished the idea that this ruling was in some way ridiculous.
Shame they're there and fighting a straw man. What was originally proposed was:
They applied for the right to state that “regular consumption of significant amounts of water can reduce the risk of development of dehydration” as well as preventing a decrease in performance.
'Reducing risk' is not the same as 'solving' (or 'treating' is the word I think they were grasping for there.)

This was bound to happen eventually. The technology is impressive but not perfect. Something we appear to forget every now and then. :(

Wow! I actually learned a couple new slurs here from Labour of all places.
I think I might start a new topic. DogsB reads the news and has irrelevant opinions that we can all ignore.
I feel that I might be disturbing the nonchalant vibe of this thread. ¯_(ツ)_¯
*edit another bug bear of mine is when did online petitions getting signatures actually mean anything.
I still don't see my lemmium!

Better?
In England and Wales buying and selling sex are not illegal but associated activities such as soliciting, kerb crawling and brothel-keeping are outlawed.
What?!?! Since when?

@DogsB Yeah, they should of fixed that typo.

So, to paraphrase, it made no difference, except where it had the opposite effect to what they
expecteddesired? So, to paraphrase, they observed something unexpected (gender disparity in interview outcome even where the interviewee's gender is unknown). The formed a hypothesis to explain the unexpected observation based on other observed data (women became discouraged and stopped interviewing at a higher rate than men). When adjusted according to the hypothesis, the observation matches the expectation.
It does raise a second unproven hypothesis without conclusively proving (or disproving) the original hypothesis, but Science Science Science Science Science... often does that. It doesn't seem like a WTF to me.

Prof Bateman, who has researched the development of the European economy, sat at the two-hour meeting without anyone mentioning her nudity they just went on with a normal meeting about tripos and marking.
Welcome to Britain.

WTF is that? Without prior knowledge, it sounds like they were at a yiffing party (I think Engine is gaining too much weight in unknown matters)...
After assistance from Google it seems they were talking about education.

In case it isn't clear: the lack of internet is not what caused me to feel sick, it was the WiFi signal from my phone. I could actually feel a difference between when I was downloading a file vs not using the network. It is very unpleasant. The feeling quickly faded when I disabled the WiFi hotspot.
Are you role playing Charles McGill?

That's not an unreasonable thing to account for, really. Though there should be a follow-up experiment to check it.

It's a character from "Better Call Saul" that has a similar "disease"

Chuck suffers from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, an unusual affliction garnered under mysterious circumstances, which makes it challenging for him to lead a normal life.

@Boner I wonder if anyone will think that's serious. I particularly liked
While the link between fireworks and geo-engineering vis-a-vis chemtrails is well known in the scientific community, the phenomenon of placing lurid chemicals known to induce homosexual inclination is a development unique to the Obama Administration.

@ijij There's at least one similar place in France, where people suffering from this kind of affliction find refuge. Closer to her than West Virginia :)
