This isn't really "new" news, but the video was released sometime last week...
49-year-old female driver injured in head-on collision with ground

While none of the ads on that page rise to the level of malware, it's definitely a case study in all the ways to make your ads annoy your users into using adblock.
-
@izzion ads? What ads?
-
@anotherusername
Well, I'm not savvy enough with ABP to get it to bypass the "you're an evil ABP user" nagwalls (too lazy), so I actually opened the page in an ad-enabled browser. Also, this way, I get to chalk one point up in the "less evil than Literal Hitler" column for the day.

the "you're an evil ABP user" nagwall
I didn't see that; I don't think any of the AdBlock Plus filters that I manually created neutered it, so I guess AAK must have?

That's easily done : close the browser tab
-
@timebandit
Well, that doesn't fulfill the "be a content thief" reason I run ABP, so it's not really a functional bypass.

So you're a fuckin thief depriving websites of revenue, you should be ashamed of yourself !!!

It's usually more details vs. grand picture. We have a basic understanding of how stuff works. It's the details which let us stumble now and again.
IMHO you have that exactly backwards: we know a lot of little details, but have no clue how they actually assemble into the big picture; that part's mostly guesswork, foregone conclusions and vague hand-waving.
ETA: And this is what leads to statements like "we only use 10% of our brain" or "most of our DNA is useless junk".

When it comes to much modern journalism, I think the "we only use 10% of our brain" appears to be flat factual…

it's recursive self-modifying code and everything is done with stupid regular expressions and substitutions.
Don't forget it's also compressed! That makes is sooo much more difficult to analyze well.... :)
And the vast majority of DNA is commented out code that that no one bothers to delete. Four billion years isn't long enough to come up with source control?
Actually, that "commented out code" plays some rather important roles...
I would be very careful to delete any of those "comments" :)
I could have sworn I read about an experiment a long time ago where a bacteria's non-coding DNA was replaced with random DNA sequences and there was no apparent change in behavior. I'm probably wrong about this.
I half-remember seeing something like that, too, but IIRC at least some of the "extra" DNA was a "backup" for the "active" sections. If an active section was damaged or removed, the backup would be able to at least partly restore it.

Google, a year ago:
Also, the measurement Bing used apparently:
- Doesn't include mobile, and
- Incudes internal searches, not just general search engines by those companies.

I'm not convinced that's a real news article. No author attribution
and no date, for one.

https://imgur.com/iqVLLnUNo author, but the local online papers where I live don't have those posted, either, so...
-
@dreikin I suspect half of those was my dad.
-
@lucas1 BTW just for jokes. My dad when he tried to do a backspace highlights the letter before the cursor and presses delete.
BTW I watched him for about 45 minutes to make attempt 4 or 5 attempts at a google search refusing any help. In the end I just pressed the backspace to prove my point.

@pjh I'd be surprised if it hadn't happened at least once, but I wouldn't expect the people involved to tell anyone, so it wouldn't make the news.
