“it certainly exposes in very stark terms the challenge which militaries face in attempting to deal with the adaptation of cheap and readily available civilian technology with extremely expensive, high-end hardware designed for state-on-state warfare.”
It's easy to solve, just start a full scale war and wipe all enemies.

Spoiler: The missile won.
That's not how I'd characterize a $3M response to $200 worth of trolling.
“I’m not sure that’s a good economic-exchange ratio,” Perkins said. “In fact, if I’m the enemy, I’m thinking, ‘Hey, I’m just going to get on eBay and buy as many of these $300 quadcopters as I can and expend all the Patriot missiles out there.’ ”
This.

In other news today, Emma Watson just learned what furries are, and also that she is one.
She's not just a feminist icon, now she's a furry icon, too. \o/

I guess the English Channel is technically part of the Atlantic Ocean, but eight hours is still a really long time for a London-Paris flight.

@abarker I would have expected it of Japan first, where an old enough tree that people like enough can get called a god, but NZ would definitely do this sort of thing.
Still it's better than the One Tree Hill thing, where the Maoris got mad and cut down the One Tree on the Hill, and then did it again when someone replanted it. That was interesting.

@chozang 10 - 20 years ago, I actually anonymously mailed a real human skull I obtained online to a monk. This is not quite as odd as it sounds; many monasteries have real human skeletons on display, but this one did not (just a plastic one), and a whole skeleton was too expensive for me.

@anotherusername I actually evaluated that for said purposes. Gave it a C-, the edges often crinkle into sharp points, the internal diameter isn't sufficient for anything larger than a pencil, and since it's water based, it's rather easy to get it too cold to be enjoyable.
Maybe if they changed up the materials in the construction it would be better but FFS use the right tools for the right job!
-
@Tsaukpaetra not to mention, the design specifically eliminates the possibility of generating much friction. It doesn't slide, it just rolls.

Okay, this one is genuinely funny:
-
anonymous German officials ... said Trump gave Merkel the bill during their meeting in Washington last week.
"No, this is not true," the White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, said when Business Insider asked the White House for comment.
So it's the word of the U.S. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer vs. the word of some German Anonymous Coward?
Good enough. Slap an inflammatory headline on it and go to print!

Good enough.Indeed. No German Anonymous Coward could ever even come close to Spicer's proud record of documented mendacity.

Pursuant to an executive order from two months ago, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) is now publishing reports to name and shame jurisdictions which ignore their requests to detain. For context, an ICE detainer request means the following:
A detainer requests that a LEA notify ICE as early as practicable – ideally at least 48 hours – before a removable alien is released from criminal custody and then briefly maintain custody of the alien for up to 48 hours to allow DHS to assume custody for removal purposes. A request for notification requests that a LEA notify ICE as early as practicable – ideally at least 48 hours – before a removable alien is released from criminal custody.
So, refusal indicates that the law enforcement agency refused or failed to notify ICE prior to releasing the suspect, or failed to then hold the suspect for up to 48 hours after the notice was sent to allow ICE time to come and take custody of the suspect.
The report lists jurisdictions, number of requests ignored, and breaks down by individual, listing the notable crimes (charged or convicted) that they have committed (it does not identify any individuals by name, however). For example:
(Asterisks indicate that the state/county has a policy of refusing or ignoring either some or all ICE detainer requests.)
