@boomzilla Come on, we have summer in Canada.
We even have nice beaches

I suspect you're just upset because we won't let you live where it's warm.

@TimeBandit They're for this particular demographic of middle-aged woman, usually overweight, who keep tiny dogs.
Next time you see either brand take a look at who's behind the wheel. Is it a man? Hardly ever. Is it a woman under about 40 years old? Never. Do they have an annoying yippy dog? Usually.
I wonder if this is just where I live but... what do you see when you look at a beige Corolla?

Usually someone who's not a whole lot older than the car is.

A Mercury driver that got tired of that piece of junk and bought a reliable car.

Exactly.

It'd also be impossible in my automatic car unless the dog is really good at manipulating several things at once.
-
@dkf I think my automatic requires the brake to be down to switch from park to drive or reverse. It certainly needs a button to be pressed while you shift it
-
I've never driven an automatic so I wouldn't know.
-
@lucas1 the auto is in the garage waiting for me to get round to selling it, but I did quite enjoy it.
It helped that it was a 2.3l luxury saloon, so quite a lot faster than my 1l city car

I can't help thinking that the wrong picture was used in that onebox:

@Jaloopa In the UK If you pass driving test in a auto, you cannot drive a car with manual transmission.
I didn't even know there was automatic cars until they went over how torque converters worked in my "Mechanics of Machines" Uni course.

Mine's only a 2.0l estate and diesel too.

nd then we laugh at you when you go bankrupt because of a broken toe.
And we respond by laughing at you when you come here for an MRI. Or point out--again--the time my wife went to see a doctor about stomach pains, and the doc said "sounds like you need your gall bladder out. Can you come back tomorrow?" And in spite of the word "need" it wasn't emergency surgery.
Sounds like what my doctor was saying: "Well, sounds like you have a kidney stone. I made an appointment at the hospital for you."
At the hospital: "You can choose to stay right here, though the earliest slot is at 2200h. Or you can come back tomorrow morning at 0700h. Either are good, what do you personally prefer?"In short: Your point being?

In North America, 1L engine are used in motorcycles, not cars ;)

Many countries don't seem to do that.

@TimeBandit I've never ridden a bike over 600CC, and even that was significantly faster and more fun than my little car could ever hope to be

I've never driven an automatic so I wouldn't know.
The situation in the US is usually the opposite, since manual transmissions are almost unknown here now. I don't think you can get a manual car from most rental places (it would certainly have to be a special request), and I hear some dealerships won't keep new ones on their lot because they are so unpopular - you would have to order one and have it sent to the dealership. There are some people who prefer manual (usually because "it's more efficient", which hasn't been true in decades but whatever), and they tend to get pissed if they have to drive an automatic, but most people under the age of 40 here have never even been in a car with a manual transmission.
Perversely, though, manual is often still referred to 'standard', even though it hasn't been the standard model here since the 1970s.
I do drive manual, but I'm not very good at it, and it usually takes me a while to get familiar with a specific car's foibles, so I do prefer automatic myself.

Illinois prison officials “gratuitously” violated an inmate’s religious rights when they confiscated a medallion symbolizing his Wiccan faith, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday.
The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals held Gilbert Knowles is entitled to a preliminary injunction allowing him to wear a pentacle medallion while the lawsuit he filed under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act is pending.

@Zecc Some twat on one of the major news sites was saying that classic shell had disappeared from his machine and was flagged by Windows for being dodgy. Sent him a link to the reddit thread and he was like "oh yeh well it couldn't happen on my machine".

AHAHAHAHAHA.

Similarly, the clock setting in the winter months is still referred to as "Standard Time" even though since 1966, Daylight Saving Time (in places where they observe such foolishness) is in effect for a greater part of the year.

Actually, you can get your system pwned that way. Unless it's fixed by now, which it probably is.

On a fairly quiet country road with interesting bends and hills, manual shifting is huge fun. In heavy traffic or going long distance on the motorway though, automatics are more relaxing.
-
@ScholRLEA Driving a diesel I tend to use the engine a brake (which you aren't supposed to do but whatever it works fine). The one thing I like about driving a manual is that I can keep the car in the power range if need be. My car has a massive turbo lag on it (nothing until about 1500 rpm) so I have to keep the car in third until about 50-60 mph when joining a motorway (especially if I am going uphill).
My father has an automatic now, and it seems to just have a massive brake pedal and an accelerator. I've never driven it, and I use the clutch a lot to control the car.
-
@dkf The first time I was in a proper traffic jam (over an hour) my leg was dead.
-
@TimeBandit It not like it is difficult. You just push the clutch down, feel the bit and then release the handbrake.

A lot of automatics have a mode where you can more exactly control what gear they're in, and that's suitable for the sort of thing you describe. I tend to not drive like that myself, but the functionality is often there. The exact way they do it varies according to which controller system they are using; many just have a way to limit how high a gear they'll use, but some have what is more like one of the semi-automatic boxes used by racing cars (though with different user interface layout).
A plus side of an automatic is that when you want to accelerate, you can just put your foot down and get on with it. The gear controller — especially on modern systems where it is integrated with the ECU — will kick down the gears as required to actually deliver acceleration instead of just pouring more fuel into the engine.
-
@lucas1 said in In other news today...:

That definitely takes some getting used to. When I was switching between the auto and manual fairly often I'd get in the auto and press the brake with both feet to stop, expecting a clutch under the left. Getting in the manual I would sometimes try and jam it into gear without hitting the clutch

Yes? That's the thing I was laughing at. All those idiots got to figure out what true invasive data theft is.
-
@dkf Yeah I can hear it doing that when my dad is driving his car.
@Jaloopa When driving in the forest there are a lot of times where I need to shift down to keep the car in control when corning, there are a few turns where if I went round in third I would probably end up on the other side of the road.
-

Stuck in traffic is the only time I would prefer an automatic, but I use the train and subway to avoid that shit.
Long distance on the highway, you leave it in 5th (or 6th) gear, how does an automatic would be more relaxing ?

...by getting a "virus" that b0rks the boot process with an easily-fixed hack and does no other damage whatsoever?

@masonwheeler These are the sort of people who consider Windows to be spyware. Any level of inconvenience to them as a result of trying to somehow "fix" it is a good thing.
