WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else

@Tsaukpaetra the headline makes it sound like they finally included that in the base setup. But you still have to install power toys, so that’s like 25 year old news.
Actually, it's amazing that Microsoft didn't break the Always on Top functionality.

Yet.

It is at least surprising they didn’t break any tool’s ability to set this flag for out of process windows when they introduced UIPI to combat shatter attacks. But I guess too much backwards compatibility depends on this in general to prevent it for anything that’s not actually a security exploit.

Status: Windows wants me to take this computer off of Ethernet and instead connect to WiFi in order to download updates.
Not sure if I want to go consider myself blessed or lucky...
-
So you managed to make a wired connection less reliable than a wireless one. I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm still impressed.
-
@Tsaukpaetra has the Ethernet connection been set as metered?

@Tsaukpaetra has the Ethernet connection been set as metered?
Shhh! Don't tell them the secret!
But yes, I did remember doing that on this particular unit because it's the broadcaster laptop and really should not have anything else taking up bandwidth (Yes I know Windows Update is "technically" download and streaming is an "upload" but this is CenturyLink we're talking about at this location, uploads can definitely be affected by downloads...).
After turning that off, downloading is presumably going now (at least according to bandwidth usage) but the "Downloading" percentage is stuck at zero.
Oh well, will try again next week.
-
@loopback0 If it's like when it happened to me, yes, but you get this even if you've set Windows Update to "download even on metered connections".
-
status: been sitting at 100 percent for half an hour now. Shirley the amount downloaded figure is a solved problem in two thousand twenty fucking two...
Nope! It's literally impossible to guage, even now.

Status: Someone dun fucked up a policy...
-
@Tsaukpaetra Who? Who?

Someone dun fucked up a policy
Consindering that this policy even exists, I'd say MS.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Should be able to do it in PowerShell. These two commands follow the default consumer policy:
Enable-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:" -EncryptionMethod Aes256 -TpmProtector Add-BitLockerKeyProtector -MountPoint "C:" -RecoveryKeyPath "%HOME%\OneDrive\Documents" -RecoveryKeyProtector

Email from Corporate IT tells me that they're going to start rolling out 20H2 in a few weeks.
-
@boomzilla https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/announcements/windows-10-20h2-end-of-servicing
These editions will no longer receive security updates after May 10, 2022.
-
@TwelveBaud yeah but only for these plebes:
Windows 10 Home, version 20H2
Windows 10 Pro, version 20H2
Windows 10 Pro Education, version 20H2
Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, version 20H2You can be sure that ours is Full Enterprise.
-
@boomzilla So, I guess whatever you're running right now is stopping updates for enterprise?
-
@boomzilla It sounds like one of those riddles: If the old version of systems that auto-update to latest stop getting support, is anyone affected?
-
@PleegWat presumably, yeah.
EDIT: Just looked, we're on 1909 currently.
-
Sent from my 20H2 Enterprise work laptop
-
@hungrier Goes off to check
21H1
-
status: don't know how we managed to get to 21H2 but people are apparently clamoring for Windows 11 so we'll see what happens...

I'm still on 19whatever. Too to reboot to Windows to see.

Yeah I've seen the commercials. Or maybe those were for Windows 10. But apparently it makes your computer have better hardware.

Yeah we're on Enterprise and moving from 1909 to 20H2 at the moment before 1909 goes EOL in May.

You leave your files in the usual disordered pile and look away for a moment as you get distracted by upvote notification. Surprise round! Greater Windows of Shmarganrog attacks and rolls 20, twice. That's a critical threat confirmed. It deletes all your carefully collected memes that you had not yet posted to TDWTF and leaves the files exactly as you left them.

Star Trek: Windows 10 would be quite a different show.
: Cortana, give me the position of the Romulan warships.
: The Romulan warships are right where you left them.: Engage.
: Installing update 1 of 27... Please do not turn off your starship.

Central Brazil really is breathtaking.
-
@Zecc I keep seeing random pictures of places, it never tells me where - but it consistently tells me how wonderful Bing is on that screen.
-
@Arantor You need to hover over the like button on the right. You don't have to click it.
-
@Zecc The real is leaving "Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen" turned on, right?
-
Wow! This nebula looks just like Brazil!
-
@Arantor I might have completely misunderstood what you were saying yesterday. Sorry.
-
@Zecc I don’t always make sense. It’s all good.

Woken up twice in one night by my computer turning itself on.
Fucking hell, why have a setting to disable maintenance from waking up the machine if you're just going to ignore it?
I've now disabled wake timers as well, hoping that makes a difference, but you know what? I'm pulling the plug.

Ah, that wasn't “maintenance”, that was “Windows Update checking if there is anything to do” which is obviously totally different!

Guess your machine is about to get to a higher patch level
-
@izzion I was gonna upgrade...but then I got high.
-
Twice today my machine has decided that it should turn on Airplane mode.
-
@boomzilla How high did you get?
-
@Applied-Mediocrity not nearly high enough.

So did mine. Oh wait. No. That was just the router rebooting again.

Not with that attitude.
Filed under: I think most people will just yaw n at this pun, but I decided to still roll with it.
