WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else
-
@Tsaukpaetra I'll see if I can find the setting (I kept the manual!) (After flashing, it forced me back into the bios implying all had been reset with the wording - oh, and luckily there was a network-install variant to installing. The manual implied USB only, which is ... problematic right now)
Edit: Don't think I mentioned this yet: It's an ASUS Z170M-Plus

@dcon said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

Found it. Shorted it. (It did, because I had to reset bios). Nope. Thinking this motherboard needs replacing. sigh.
Maybe instead of creating another franckenbeast, I'll just order a preconfigured desktop and move my hard drives over...
-
@dcon said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

At that point you'll likely need a new CPU and RAM anyways, assuming you can't get an equivalent-gen (or RMA) replacement...
-
@Tsaukpaetra Since this system is 3+ years old, I think I'm out of RMA range. However, Amazon does currently have this motherboard for 195... (butbut new shiny!)
-
What's weird is that you mentioned earlier that a USB hub was properly detected by Windows, so the USB hardware on your motherboard is probably (mostly?) fine.
If your machine still includes a DVD drive, have you tried booting a Linux live distro, to see if there's something in the logs about the problem with USB?
-
@Zerosquare The issue is much lower than the OS. The BIOS cannot detect a USB keyboard. I have a DVD, but it pretty much stopped working after a couple months. Cheapass piece of LG crap.

It might not be one of the devices the BIOS can use at boot.
-
99.9% unrelated. I hate putting tech (and a few other things) into landfills/rubbish. About to toss 2 full totes of keyboards. Many of the the originals (some in the boxes) that came with dell computers; almost all of them "Crap", but basically unused....

The last time I used a Dell machine must have been ~10 years ago, but I remember the keyboards being somewhat decent (not as good as high-end keyboards of course, but not complete rubbish like the cheapest models you can buy, either). Has this changed?

Unrelated, and I'm not sure if this still applies to Windows 10 (I run Win7), but:
TL;DR: don't run the Windows Update cleanup option of the Disk Cleanup tool, unless you want to make your Windows installation unusable.
Here's what happens:
- Windows' Disk Cleanup tool claims it can reclaim ~30 GB of disk space by deleting unused Windows Update backups.
- "Great!" you think, and you click OK. It runs for several minutes, then exits.
- You check the free disk space, see that it hasn't increased at all, and think "Damn. I've been lied to."
- You reboot the machine. You get a "Configuring updates..." screen which freezes at 100% completion. You wait several minutes, but nothing happens.
- You reboot the machine again. This time, you get the same screen, but it freezes at 35% completion. You wait several minutes, but nothing happens.
- You reboot into Safe Mode. Same screen. Still frozen at 35%.
- You try to use Last known good configuration in the boot menu (if it shows up in the first place). It doesn't work.
- You try to use System Restore in the boot menu (if it shows up in the first place). It doesn't work either.
- Exasperated, you Google the issue and discover plenty of people complaining about the same thing.
- The first result is Microsoft's support forum. Of course, all of the answers are completely useless.
- With more Googling, you find there's a magic command you can enter into the Recovery Console that's supposed to fix the whole mess. But you also find people saying their Windows installation got corrupted.
- The other advice is "Just be patient. It's very slow, but it will eventually complete and boot normally.", so you wait... and wait... and wait...
- More than two hours later, hurrah! It did finally boot indeed!
- You consider yourself lucky, as some people say they had to wait more than four hours.
-

That's pretty much every problem with Windows.
As for the Windows Update Cleanup program, I had that problem once on Windows 7 but it seems to work OK on Windows 10.
And it is horrendously slow.
-
I tried it on a Windows 10 machine. It's still glacially slow. The only difference is that now it actually starts as soon as you click OK ; but it still can't be cancelled, and powering down/rebooting the machine is delayed until it's finished.
-
@Zerosquare said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

I run it in my w10 VMs all the time. (I don't bother checking if it actually reclaimed all the space it said). But it Just Works.
-
Windows Search, again. Let's say I want to search for something common, like screen settings. So I type the swedish word for screen into the search as I use swedish Windows.
At the bottom of the list is Settings (7+) so I click that one to see the results for settings.
Nothing. But wait...
Replace the swedish word with the ENGLISH word and it shows relevant results. In swedish. I don't even...

I think they must delete all actually useful answers.

I'm sure the terminal's still lacking primary selection, though.

They improved the terminal a lot and you can now run Linux GUI apps.
It's almost as good as running Linux !
Except, you still have to suffer Windows Update and forced reboot in the middle of your alien shooting

3-dimensional desktops will never take off!

Not sure what you mean, but the normal command window had "quick select" for ages. I don't know if that still does block selection, though, which is so retarded that it's absolutely useless.

That's basically what stuff looks like in Hollywood movies, it's just missing a nice VB guy and two-idiots-one-keyboard.
-
@topspin said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

It doesn't, they changed it in either 8 or 10 to do selection how you would expect.
-
@bobjanova Yeah, I believe an 18-something (or was it in 2019?) update to Windows 10 introduced the new console and new settings window:
EDIT: Wait, no, that was when it was rolled out in general. It seems to be in preview for far longer:

You mean double click to select? But you can't middle click to paste. Not being able to do that makes me exceedingly cranky.
-
@boomzilla if “quick edit” or whatever it’s called is on you can select with left (single click) and paste with right. But it’s used to be pretty useless when there was a line wrap because they optimized for the 0.01% use case.
-
@topspin huh....interesting. At first I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. Turns out you have to click once before it will paste (or at least clear the selection?). That's kind of annoying, but could still be handy if I ever find myself stuck on Windows.

@Applied-Mediocrity this, except more @levicki-style because I hate corporate graphics designers.

Name your desktops. Now instead of “Desktop 1” or “Desktop 2” you can give your Virtual Desktops more descriptive, clever, or amusing names
Welcome to, what, the 90s? The 80s? Someone more help me out here.

My Commodore 64 didn't have virtual desktops.
Anywho, in Windows 10's Task View you can make virtual desktops and they just get named "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2" and so on. In the new version you can rename them. Yay?

Virtual desktops seem like little more than a gimmick -- a solution in search of a problem.
What practical application is there for virtual desktops? The only thing I can think of is putting regular stuff on one desktop and stuff you don't want your wife or boss to see on another desktop.
Other than that, if you're enough of a "power user" that you need multiple desktops -- just use multiple monitors. You have everything right in front of you and don't have to mess around with switching to different desktops. I've been using multiple monitors at home and at work for 10+ years.

I don't have much use for them on this machine that has two monitors and could have a couple more before adding any hardware for them. However, folks with more limited devices or resources (or space!) might like them, as might those who got used to using them back when multiple monitors were not that common due to expense, weight, and the required extra video hardware. Everyone works differently.

I use them to separate work projects in progress. Desktop 1 has all the windows and shit for project A, and Desktop 2 has shit for project B, etc.
I do this even though I have three monitors, because it's easier to separate task groups that way.
I can hear a horse whinnying "But just close the apps you're not using!" and to that I say "Fuck that, there's a reason I try to never have to reboot the damn box because of how annoying it is to relaunch shit."

Yes.

They all suck.

I have considered acquiring one (none in particular) at some point.I never did because

Yes, multiple different solutions.
Or you could get a monitor stand for multiple monitors.

Also, INB4 someone suggests mounting the secondary monitor over, rather than to the side, of the main one.

I have multiple desktops on multiple monitors. They're not exclusive.
