Edit: Um....
Why does a virtual shooting range need a PDF reader?
Edit edit: Oh, and they create a user named
User
and it's password is just the company name. And then they change the password for the Administrator user named after the company is simply the company name surrounded in exclamation marks!Oh! Oh! And how about we share shit with
Everyone
???What the shit??!?

@Tsaukpaetra Oh, and for some actually-related-to-Windows-10 stuff, apparently if you enable AutoAdminLogon you can lock out your account if you reboot too many times and the password is invalid.

That seems like something a search feature shouldn't need to "figure out".

@Tsaukpaetra Looks like a standard IoT system configuration for a full-fat-OS-in-embedded system. Everything open fox maximum ease of development. Everything installed that can possibly fit. Then leave it unsecured.
It's what you usually see in routers and whatnot. Just with Windows this time.

We have a (retarded, what else would you expect?) corporate policy that pins IE (yes, IE, not Edge) to the task bar at every restart. So every time I have to reboot, the first thing I do is unpin it.
(at least until now it hasn't tried to unpin the other stuff I pinned myself...)
-
@remi said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

At least, you don't have to reboot often.
Oh, wait...
-
@TimeBandit Also, corporate IT has done something that means "hibernate" doesn't work (tbh, the option wasn't available at all until I took advantage of having local admin rights (which I normally shouldn't) to enable it). When I pick that option, it just locks the computer and puts it to sleep.
Which means if I want to e.g. take my laptop home for the night (or the weekend), I need to make sure I plug it at home otherwise next time I want to wake it up the battery is dead and I'm forced to reboot.
-
@remi Sounds like it's not even sleeping if it uses that much battery.

Why is it apparently impossible to have my own shortcuts here? Why can't I order them in the way I want? Oh, and by the by, the order presented here has no impact on the order they appear in the Start Menu.
How can this be so wrong?!?

The Windows 10 Start Menu is one of the biggest fuckups in the entire history of Windows (only exceeded by the Windows 8 Start Menu).
Fortunately, the retarded fuckery of the Windows 10 Start Menu is easily fixed.

In the news today I read that Microsoft is phasing out the ability to create a local user account in Windows 10. If it detects internet access, the first account must be a Microsoft account. The option to create a local user is missing in some countries during the OOBE.
And now for some good news
Today, Microsoft announced a major shift in focus for its personal assistant, Cortana: she's getting out of the consumer gadget business and focusing on productivity. The new version of Cortana will debut with the next major update to Windows 10, expected to roll out in April.
Microsoft is tightening access to Cortana considerably. First and foremost, no more Cortana use for anyone only using local accounts. Cortana access will only be available to those logged in with school work domain accounts or Microsoft online accounts—Windows 10 users sticking to local accounts only will also be out of luck.
No more Cortana
The new Cortana's focus will be on a productivity-focused chat UI.
-
@El_Heffe what I like about this new-fangled () hype garbage is that most of it goes away before I ever try it.
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
@topspin You all are reading that announcement wrong -- Cortana isn't going away, it's your ability to use local accounts which will be going away real soon. I wish I was joking.
For many of the people around here, that means it is going away, for all intensive porpoises.
-
I have Cortana disabled anyway.

TBH, I know that it ate all its battery when I left it in that state for several days and I therefore took the habit of plugging it back in when I get home for the night. But I have never really tried to let it just for a night, so maybe it would be able to hold for that long?
I'll give it a try next time, FOR SCIENCE!!!

After I login, I see the search thing I never use on taskbar is now expanded, stealing a large chunk of my taskbar. Also, my background image has changed. And the taskbar's color is also slightly different. (though that might be because it's now semi-transparent, I think?)
How bloody difficult is it to have memorized my theme and taskbar preferences?
Also, where did my background image go? It was one of the default Windows backgrounds, but now I can't find it.Of course this also happened to another computer. I've already downloaded the old desktop image from the interwebs to the other machine, now I'll have to do the same for this one.
I'm still mad and perplexed by this.

So after work on Friday I kicked off my normal Friday afternoon backup. I forgot to check on it that night so I went in Saturday to turn the machine off only to find that it was already off. Huh. Weird. Oh, well, must have been an update or something.
Fire it up this morning and, yup, "Working on Updates." Super. Let it finish...then go into the Software Center to see what it was.

How so? I see three differently named updates waiting for a reboot. At least one of them has to be not a security update.
I assume the last one failed because the previous ones had not rebooted yet.

@acrow The first two are security updates (despite the title) and the last also applies to 2019 LTSC (1809).
