Apparently my files will be right where I left them...
They are.
-
@loopback0 Leaving them in the trash can was very proactive of you.
-
@loopback0 Previously they would offer the current major update to anyone who went into Settings and checked for them, but they're being extra careful this time around. I also had to use the Update Assistant to get it to go.

If that's true then their own status page shouldn't say what it does.

Of the 5 machines I've updated so far, only 1 offered 1903. Had to use the assistant for all the others.
-
According to Settings » System » About, I'm still running 1803 on my home box.

Windows Update just told me it had new updates for me and it needed to restart. I normally leave Windows to it but I only updated this morning and I had to force that. I pressed the fuck off button.

When it tells me, I've gotten in the habit of manually running a check after reboot. Ok, I got in that habit with XP...

Yeah, any time I go to update something manually I keep repeating the check until it stops or there's clearly something wrong. *nixes nowadays seem to need it just as much as Windows.

The recommended servicing status is Semi-Annual Channel.
Maybe you are on Semi-Annual (Targeted)?
I'm fairly sure it wasn't and now that option doesn't exist to check.

Doesn't Windows 10 subscribe you to Beta ring of updates, if you click the "Check for Updates" button? Why would you want those?
Also, of course it will find more updates, if it only installed the Stable ones on the first go.
-
@Parody said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

Care to tell me which distro/package-manager, so I can steer clear of it?
Not that I use anything other than "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" day-to-day anyway, and I haven't noticed said behavior there yet. But s****ing updates is one of the early warning signs of a steep downhill slope, and I want to be sure I'm not on that distro; I like my working environment stable.

Mint, Ubuntu, and FreeBSD, at least. They're all update the updater and related software/data files, restart the updater, update to new OS version (if any), reboot, run the updater, update the software until nothing wants to be updated.
-
@acrow said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

No. It previously gave you whatever updates were available if you went and clicked the button, even if they weren't yet scheduled for wide release. (Ex: Not yet a Patch Tuesday.) This was a one-time thing and there was no subscription to any rings involved.
It doesn't work that way now.

Technically, no. Clicking on the Windows Update button just gets you whatever is officially ready for release to the general public (unless you specifically signed up for the Insider Preview program).
Although, you could argue that it doesn't really matter, because all of Windows 10 is always a "beta" release due to the lack of QA.

Status: Updated desktop to 1903. No issues, no re-appearing "suggested apps". I must be in a parallel universe, because I've yet to have a Windows Update problem (except the time I helped my sister update...she was only 2.5 years out of date. That took a while.)

Is your start menu working? How about right-click on This PC icon? I had some weird issues in a VM...
All works fine. The machine is pretty new, but it's a frankenputer built from parts.

Yeah. I haven't seen them at all, really, except on a fresh install of 1809(?) on this machine. The other installs were upgrades and I never saw them there.

IIRC, they finally got the last of those problems out in 1709 (the "Fall Creators' Update"), though you wouldn't have been able to tell until you installed a later major update. One of the sillier problems, unfortunately, but not as bad as the original's "not enough entries to show everything in the Start Menu". :P

Status: Walked a Win10 customer through some driver/SDK install issues with one of our products, and got them up and running. A couple of days later, and they contact me again. Nothing works anymore!
I got a few Device Manager screenshots from them, and surprise! Microsoft force-enabled Secure Boot sometime in the past two days and so our drivers are blocked on his machine!
Thanks, Microsoft! I love you so much! You're the best!

It wasn't quite like that. It just wasn't cross-signed by Microsoft, because Microsoft's process for that was long, difficult, and incorrectly-documented so I'd never figured it out before.
-

Same difference.

@mott555 said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
So during the past two weeks, Microsoft pushed out Windows Updates that go into your UEFI settings and force-enable Secure Boot.
Ah, that would explain the BitLocker recovery I had to do on my laptop...

This is part of Windows 10 Insider Preview build 18917, part of the fast ring of updates. You can experiment with it today, although you’ll have to join the Windows Insider program and get unstable builds of Windows 10 on your PC.

I have to eat a bit of public crow. Turns out there was a bad effect of the upgrade. It decided to shuffle the drive letters around. Which broke Google Drive File Stream, because that stupidly installs itself as a separate drive instead of syncing to a folder like everything else.

Yes, is GDFS. Because it will fuck you over if you don't let it have
G:
.

.You can change the default drive letter, which is what I ended up doing. Windows decided that my DVD drive should be
G
and GDFS should beE
...even though there isn't a D at all. It shoved...something that did nothing...toH
.
-
@Benjamin-Hall GDFS probably initialized first. He (who is unassigned) who asks for a drive letter will get the lowest available. THat's what annoyed me. If I assigned it H: and forgot to put my USB stick in (which is assigned G:), GDFS always stole G: on me.

Yeah, why be limited to 26 drives when you could use drive emoji and have many more.

Which is fantastic, since there's literally no benefit to doing it that way.

So, which emoji would be appropriate for a drive filled with pr0n stash?
-
@dcon Yeah, but GDFS has a "default drive letter". Which should have set it to
G
. But no, Windows assigned itE
. Unless Windows doesn't listen to requests for a specific drive letter. And still doesn't explain why the hardware drive showed up further down the list than the software one...you'd think that would have been initialized at the UEFI stage. But whatever.

What does that look like on your machine/browser actually? To me it looks rather non-suggestive, despite including droplets and something with a faint resemblance to an eggplant. So I assume that I have a different font rendering it or something.

In sexual contexts, the sweat droplets emoji is used to depict sexual fluids.

Looks more flat on Firefox, on Ubuntu 18.04 ... but I don't see the appeal either way. Maybe if you reversed the order... meh, I'll just lump you in with the millennials and their teenage jokes.
