@acrow I don't like that article because it seems to imply that assigning unicode strings to people is wrong.
Really? I thought the point of the article was that the ideal database columns for name handling are:
- name varchar(1024)
- whatItWantsToBeCalledInLetters varchar(255)
- encodingOfName enum

Calling them "insecurity questions" works in more than one way. ... You remember your first date, don't you?
Late 20s or early 30s. I'd signed up for a video dating service that cost >$1000, IIRC. I got exactly one date out of it. It was a lunch date. I don't remember her name.
I did one of those also - I remember it at around 900. I think I got 2 or 3 dates out of it in a year...

I thought that you store the user name in a database by taking a photo of a name written on a piece of paper laid down on a wooden table, then print that, scan it, take a screenshot and put it in a Word document which you insert into a BLOB column?
BLOB? No no no. Base64-encode it, ROT13 the result for security, and then put it in a varchar(max) column.

But make sure you OCR it when it does into Word - because the user will expect a search to succeed.

you could still login using PIN because PIN is authenticated locally. How much that makes sense from a security perspective I have no idea.
Not true, when the locally cached credentials expire it prevents login via any means. And if the computer happens to also have expired credentials, well... "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed"

2019 and I still can't cancel the installation of shit.
Sigh. Let's wait a night for them all to cum down so I can fuck them off the VM...
-
I just noticed this in my start menu
Is it updating? If so, what's taking it so long?
-
It's still there. Maybe it's helpfully reminding me what "about half" looks like, in case I want to calculate that?
-
@hungrier Maybe it shows the state of its bit bucket. When it's full you need to order a new one.
-
@levicki that does nothing to cancel the installation as it's happening

Why am I not surprised you need to reboot?
-
Can't install latest Windows 10 if you have an external USB drive connected, due to "Inappropriate drive reassignment".
"Microsoft won't block the May 2019 Update for all Windows 10 users, but only those running the April 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1803) or the October 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1809). Users using older versions of Windows 10 will be able to move to the May 2019 Update without problems."

Here's a challenge for everyone who has Windows 10 installed on a non-touch PC:
- Open the Snip & Sketch tool, or press Win+Shift+S, and take a screenshot.
- Click on the ruler button.
- Figure out how to rotate the ruler.
-
@anonymous234 Pressing Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Pinkie mouse button, and only if you say Please?
-
I just found another stupid Windows 10 bug (the kind that shouldn't even be able to happen unless you're doing something really weird underneath).
Open the quick notes app (which is 100% redundant with the OneNote app but still exists for some reason) and write some stuff:
Now press the enter key a bunch of times. The text "moves up" and gets hidden and we see a scrollbar as expected. Now immediately press backspace to delete those line breaks you just inserted until the scrollbar disappears again:
The text is gone! It's not really gone of course, it reappears if you switch windows or select it. But it can sure be confusing the first time. Can someone confirm it's not just my GPU drivers or something?

@El_Heffe For drawing straight lines on the screenshot.
Not for measuring distances though. Seriously, it doesn't do that.

WTF is a ruler?
Edit:
-
@Parody Well, you c,learly have a different approach than I do. I dragged various parts for minutes and even tried the keyboard until I gave up and googled it.
I didn't even need the damn ruler at that point, I was just curious.

Dumb luck wins out over logic sometimes. :)
Snip and Sketch is one of those applications that doesn't fulfill any of my needs. I don't take screenshots that often, even on my Windows tablet where the touch interface might be helpful. When I do need screenshots I want to do more than what S&S does, so I turn to Paint.NET or Photoshop.

It's not just you. (Or we're both on a Surface Book.)
It's not just blank lines - it triggers even if there's text there too.
-
@anonymous234 said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

Can affirm.
This was when I backspaced to the last line. Apparently it doesn't dirty properly?
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

It dos make me wonder is going on internally to fuck that up. Knowing what should be showing in the viewport at any moment and repainting it as stuff moves around is a fundamental operation of any scrollable GUI element; it shouldn't ever require further user code to achieve…

Using the ancient and forgotten technique of "not giving up after the first thing I tried didn't work" I have determined that scrolling the mouse wheel rotates the ruler.

but also, TIL about the ruler, this could actually be pretty useful
