I fear I did some really bad traffic rule violation yesterday evening. I went to Frankfurt by car, and back. Most of the motorway has 3 lanes per direction, and I mostly used the right lane. It was almost empty for all that distance, all other cars (even slow ones) used the middle or left lane...
Can someone tell me when the Straßenverkehrsordnung (German traffic law) was changed, and driving on the right lane was outlawed for non-emergency use?

Now that I tow a trailer a lot, I have actually found the right lane is the fastest - especially in rush hour traffic. I'm guessing because (1) everyone tries to get in the "fast" lane, and (2) no one wants to deal with people merging onto the highway.

I've also noticed that, though there is a threshold based on traffic density (for medium density, left lane is still slightly faster). Judging the point at which to switch isn't always obvious (and I hate people who keep changing lanes, so I try to pick one and stick to it).
In addition to your guesses, mine is that right lane has all the heavy good vehicles who tend to accelerate and brake more slowly, in effect driving more smoothly. This removes a lot of the sudden-stop-then-go phases and it would seem this makes it a bit faster. On sections where there is a bit of a distance between junctions (on my commute, there are two 5-10 km segments without junctions), I think that the longer average distance between trucks means that when traffic "clots" the trucks can keep on going for longer as they close all that space.
-
@dcon That was far outside of rush hour traffic, and the whole motorway was - in the directions I drove - almost empty, the right lane being most emptiest ( ), hardly any heavy goods vehicles.
And, btw, overtaking on the right is an offence. May cost you your driving license for a few months (something something
Kolonnenverkehr
blah blah when it is acceptable to be faster on the right lane than on the lane left of it).

First snow. Had a 14-car pileup and several trucks getting stuck in various slopes leading to long queues and slow traffic. Snow to continue through the night, so going to work tomorrow will be fun I guess. Only took 2 hours to get home, instead of the usual 50 minutes. Although a friend of mine had to wait 3 extra hours before his 2 hour ride so could have been worse...

It's supposed to be 94 here today. (Thankfully, tomorrow is forecast at 76) At least we're in a covered horse arena for our dog show.
-
@Atazhaia I'm so glad I work where I sleep. Or rather: the converse.

Due to continued traffic issues my bus is today not even bothering with the main road and taking the full detour, which is twice as long on narrower and slower roads. Meaning I am missing the weekly meeting at work, oh no…
My colleague didn’t even get the bus as they cancelled his stop. So, guess we’ll see how well this’ll go.

Errr... guys... I think you're overlooking a little problem. Where would we find non-idiot people to enforce that law?

Just install an AIDM in everyone's car, and every time you do something stupid it'll buzz at you and spit out your ticket.
And a telepathy machine blocker so nobody can have sex in the back seat

@boomzilla Not just Alaska. I've seen similar video—actually from the plane—from somewhere in the Midwest—less car traffic, a pub in the middle of nowhere and apparently it's common for people to fly there, landing on the road.

Seems like a perfect business opportunity to start a towing company that charges exhorbitant rates, and is also the only company allowed into the private property. Pay or have your truck taken. Soon enough, the towing company can get into trucking as well.
-
@blek That they specifically point out Swift trucks on their signage reminds me of the 8'4" bridge and its love for Penske trucks.

In the case of the bridge, the love makes sense. Penske is a truck rental company. They rent trucks to people like me, who aren't accustomed to driving vehicles taller than an average SUV or minivan. They (it's never happened to me, although I've come really close) aren't used to thinking about how high their vehicles are, so they just don't notice the warning signs.
-
@HardwareGeek There are other use cases for non-truck drivers.
E.g. bicycles carriers on the roof of your car. And then you enter a parking garage...
-
@BernieTheBernie In that case, you find that the bicycle carrier becomes a trailer.
