@Carnage Well, unless you are deaf, you'd really shouldn't miss an emergency vehicle there.

emergency vehicle coming that way at a really high speed.
should have it's siren going and still shouldn't approach this kind of road situation at high speed

Deaf, or listening to music. Or the emergency vehicle just going with the blue lights and the cyclist is wearing sunglasses that make the reflected blue light pretty much invisible.
And then there's the possibility of someone cutting in before the lane is fully available, or you just simply not merging as soon as you think so there is actually room for someone behind you merging before.
There is never any good reason not to look before you move across to another lane. Especially so if you are not in a protective steel cage.

Riding a bike, in traffic at that, with earphones, is stupid, yes. (It is also forbidden at least in France, and while they have some insane rules there, there is clearly good reason for this one.)

an emergency vehicle with only lights isn't a priority and should follow the normal laws
but then again maybe the cyclist is deaf or partially blind
anyway you look at it ... the cyclist is

Not in my country, flashing blue lights is enough for them to break traffic laws, I think...
The police may also ignore traffic laws while doing a silent emergency run (as in, no lights, no sounds). Fun times, eh?
They may only do silent runs if there is a risk of the criminals they are going for doing a quick GTFO at the sound of sirens and/or blinkenlights but I've seen them doing it for extended ranges, and for really silly reasons.
Usually, they are really careful to not put anyone at risk...
-
@Zerosquare said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:
Here's a small test:
Near an intersection, you're driving on the left-hand side of the road. Your right blinker is on. Which direction are you going?
.
.
.
.If you said "straight ahead, of course", you're thinking like a driver I saw the other day.
That's nothing unusual. Usually it happens because they just exited right (hence the blinker)... they didn't turn sharply enough for the turn signal to reset itself, and they've forgotten all about it. There's no telling what they'll be doing at the next intersection that they come to.
-
@Carnage said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:
@lolwhat Not that push bikes requires a driving license, but there are people unironically suggesting it being implemented.
That's the cyclist fault entirely. If a lot of them (probably not most) weren't so cavalier about the safety of the road users around them noone would have a problem. Especially couriers and food delievery people. If they won't behave themselves then the government will step in and start handing out fines and forcing everyone on to licenses.

Police fairly regularly abuse their lights/siren in congested traffic, yes. I mean, maybe in each and every case they are in an actual emergency, but I very much doubt it. The worst case I saw was an evening with stop-and-go traffic on a congested highway: there was a police car a few cars behind me, they got stuck like everyone for 1-2 min and then suddenly decided they had enough and turned on their lights to go past everyone. OK, sure, in theory they could have just received a call at that moment, but it seems much more likely that they just got bored and decided not to wait.

If I had a magic "Get out of my way!" feature on my car, I'd also use it like that. Especially since I've gotten used to filtering on motorcycles.

Well, you are in the right thread. Are you one of those people who yells at others when they fail to get out of your way?
Or do you not need a bell because you have one of these instead?

I spent a few days in Rome on vacation and the ambulances have their sirens constantly blaring all throughout the night.
I'm very glad this doesn't happen here. I live close to a hospital.
Plus, they actually know to only turn their sirens when needed, ie near/at junctions or coming through traffic.

No I stop and hand them over my request to pass on the proper form in triple and properly signed

In the UK it's illegal to cycle on a named motorway (M-roads)
It's any road designated a Motorway, most of which have a ânumberâ
M
followed by some digits (e.g.,M25
for the world's biggest orbital car park); roads which don't follow that naming pattern will have a suffix(M)
instead (classic example:A1 (M)
; that's a motorway in some stretches but in others it doesn't carry enough traffic to justify it, and it even has a stretch past the England/Scotland border that is just a totally ordinary road). Also excluded are pedestrians, farm vehicles and anything pulled by a horse. And there's a few other roads which have the exclusions too, at least in some sections.

The sirens are more likely when on the way to an incident. When returning with a patient, they'll often keep the lights on but have the siren off (and drive slower and more carefully) in order to disturb the patient less.
-
@dkf Here they use the siren depending on traffic. When they have enough free space around them, they drive with just the lights. When there are some cars that can be passed if they don't get in the way they turn on a slow pulsating tone. And only when they need the others to actually move out of the way or when they are coming to a junction, they turn on a more pronounced fast pulsating mode. Going through the town it usually change it every couple of seconds.

I've never found the ones on a bike that useful. Now ones that attach to your glasses are magical!

I am so fully aware of when my blinkers turn on or off that personally this could never happen. But somehow it happens very often. I can't grok it.

To fix the problem, I suggest adding a clicking sound as a reminder that the blinkers are turned on.

Status: Thankfully I assume everyone on this planet is a fucking retard, otherwise I would have just crashed into some asshole.
Iâm on a big 4 lane street and have right of way, the asshole crosses from a little side street without yielding. Probably going at least 70 kph in city limits. I hit the brakes full stop, he didnât even slow down. Was gone too fast to check the license plate to report him.

Sounds like that driver was intoxicated somehow. If you have a dashcam, check the footage to see if the plate was captured; if it was, pass that segment on to the cops.

Friday after midnight thatâs very likely. Car was full of passengers, too, so I assume a bunch of intoxicated late-teens / early-twens being beyond reckless.
I donât have a dash cam but this makes me think maybe I should get one.

I don't know how true it is, but a cop once told me at that hour one in three people on the road has been drinking.
Probably a bit of an exaggeration but it definitely can't hurt to drive like it's true. I try never to drive at night for a myriad of reasons, that being one of them.

It's more that the others were at least smart enough to leave their drink at the pub.

If I hadn't been tired and trying to get home to go to sleep because I knew I had an early morning the next day, I'd have called this guy in. He was furiously playing with his phone while driving and barely keeping his vehicle between the dotted white lines. He almost received instant karma when he almost drove straight into a "Lane Closing" billboard in a construction zone, but he managed to slam on the brakes just in time. I figured he'd have learned his lesson at that point, but nope, he kept using his phone and I witnessed about 3 near-accidents in the two miles I was behind him.
It was night, and his phone screen was so bright it was almost blinding to me.
-
The heat must be getting to people. I was in the outer turn lane (left) and the person in the inner lane nearly ran me off the road. I was so pissed I actually rolled down my window (I've recently had to actually use A/C ) just to flip them off.

@Tsaukpaetra Since technology doesn't seem to be quite there yet for the much awaited punch-people-in-the-face-over-TCP/IP, I'd settle for insult people over car peer-to-peer radio.

Anything that allows me to yell at their face. They do make fm-transmitters... A little additional work so you could pick a popular frequency, and an added mic in the car...
(I think I still have one - it was so I could listen to the music on my not-ipod - this was before cars started adding proper connections)

Would that be able to transmit outside the car? I would think that it's designed to work only at a pretty short range (from your phone/mp3 player/phonograph/etc to your car radio)
-

Youâve obviously never sat in a traffic jam with your FM radio on to a low-frequency channel.

Some time ago, I've read that such a system is being installed in emergency vehicles here, except it transmits on the whole FM band. Because apparently, there are people who don't notice the flashing lights and the siren

Actually, some French emergency services have recently started using American police-style sirens. They say they get noticed more, because people aren't used to the sound, but still recognize it as an emergency siren because of American movies and series. But it's probably a matter of time before the novelty effect wears off.

Actually, just replace them with a loud speaker (
