@BernieTheBernie With or without the Russian license plate or paint, I'd get out of his way if he was driving on the sidewalk

rare eclipse
??
I've seen approximately infinite times more lunar eclipses than I have solar eclipses.
-
@kazitor Total lunar eclipses occur from 0 to 3 times a year (always at full moon), and when they do, they can be seen from anywhere on the night side of the Earth (assuming the view isn't blocked by clouds, mountains, trees, etc.). A list of recent eclipses visible from the US, shows as many as 3 in one year and as few as one in a span of 4 years.
Solar eclipses occur 2 to 5 times a year, always a half-month before or after a lunar eclipse, but are only visible from a tiny fraction of the the Earth's surface — a narrow strip perhaps as much as 200 km (and often non-existent) wide in which the Moon completely blocks the Sun (except the corona), and a much broader region in which the Sun is only partially blocked. Any given spot on the Earth may experience a
total solar eclipse only once in a century (NASA) or 3–4 centuries (Britannica).I've seen a few lunar eclipses — I don't remember how many — and two partial solar eclipses. I've never seen a total solar eclipse; I wanted to drive up to Oregon for the one in 2017, but was prevented by lack of money and lack of advance planning, and settled for watching the partial eclipse visible from here in Silly Valley using a homemade pinhole viewer.

I got to see the one in 2017, without the crowds even- we went to see family up in Idaho (not just for the eclipse). I gotta say, it was an awesome birthday present from the universe.

Exactly. They're easy to spot, rather than needing to be in the path of totality. Hence, not rare.

@boomzilla Ok, who ordered the portable meth lab?
-
I don't know if this counts as an anti-pattern, since it is (and, I hope, remains) very uncommon, but I'll post it here anyway.
Seen on the way to work this morning, a car driving down the street with its hood (bonnet, for those of you who sprinkle your words with superfluous us) wide open, blocking the driver's view of the road ahead.
-
-
@Zerosquare Indeed. There was some object — I couldn't identify just what it was; too far away — projecting upward from the engine compartment. I assume that was why the hood was open. Whatever it was, the driver was not merely moving the car to the nearest mechanic, as he/she passed such a place and continued down the street.

You're sure it wasn't the mechanic in there?
-
@HardwareGeek Yeah that's not an antipattern as much as plain fucking madness.

@Luhmann Don't we have a "stupid Quora questions thread"?

I would've led by telling the insurance adjuster that they needed to re-check the police report because it directly contradicted her version of the story. Because here's the thing: the insurance company wasn't going to back down unless there was proof. But if the police report and video evidence both prove that their client was lying, there's no point wasting 30 minutes going round and round in circles before bringing that up.
-
@brie Well, it's fun pissing off the company that didn't do this check themselves.
-
@JBert said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

Just-in-time debugging.
-
@pie_flavor Not fun enough that I'd like to waste a half hour on the phone unnecessarily.

Guess whose insurance policy isn't going to be renewed.
-
@HardwareGeek That would certainly be poetic justice.
What would be even more fun would be if they declared that providing them with false information about her claim was a violation of her insurance policy and terminated it early.

Well, if they're really vicious about it they could try to get her for attempted insurance fraud.
-
@Rhywden Yeah, they could sue her over it, but it would probably not be worth the cost. And cops are probably going to have bigger priorities... note the implied "please don't waste my time on paperwork for this" from the original cop, in asking her if she'd like to recant her false statement instead of just slapping her with a charge.

Yeah, I can't really tell political leanings from their profile pictures either.

It's easy. @pie is the one with the left-leaning cheese, @brie_flavor is the one with the right-leaning pie.

I confuse my left and my right all the time so that doesn't really help either.
I think I am a bit dyslexic.

There's a new trend that's really been grinding my gears: people asking me for clarification on whether I mean stage-right or audience-right when we're doing something that DOESN'T INVOLVE A STAGE OR AN AUDIENCE OR ANYTHING REMOTELY LIKE THAT.
-
@mott555 The non-stage terms are "right" and "other right"

My right versus your right if we are facing each other?

Yeah, it's common to close your eyes while motorboating.

Speaking of supercapacitors (), a while ago I heard about supercapacitor jump start packs that are supposedly better than the lithium battery ones: Instead of keeping it charged up, you just charge the supercap from your car battery (or anything else, but usually your car battery won't be completely flat, just too weak to start the engine) and once it's got enough juice it can get you going.
Does anyone know
a) if they're as good as they say, and
b) why the f aren't they available in Canadia?
