Child mortality was so high (think 1/3rd) that in many places people didn't name their children until they were a certain age. And that's without getting into the ocean of ... plain lack of morals that plagued every country.
Methinks you have a rather large blind spot or two.

The vast majority of people was illiterate
oh, the irony
Maybe. But a small amount of thought makes it seem like it should be "was". Maybe investigation would show otherwise, if it's a special case.
-
Was is correct. Removing the non-“numeric” qualifiers:

I would be more surprised to start digging a hole and find a hole already there. I would expect to find a body where I start digging a hole, namely, the body of the earth.

Dammit! How many times haven't we told you already to clean your desk! Look at all that junk!Takes note never to post pictures of his desk.
Is that a sticky note to join all the others?
Or is it so that you don't make the rest of us feel bad with your immaculate workspace?

Well, seeing as I already have a wonderful wife, I guess I'll go with whichever has better mileage.
-
@djls45 I hear your wife gets 50 to the gallon
-
@djls45 no sir. a mere will not cover the magnitude of this particular ry you have here displayed. oh no. "body of the earth" indeed. i do not capitalize in response for fear i will be unable to stop.
-
@Jaloopa I meant for the car.
My wife already has the latest and greatest biocomponents available — self-healing nanites, intelligence module, wisdom module, empathic module, communications modules (verbal and non-verbal), full suite of sensor arrays, highly-functional short-term and long-term memory stores with banks of pre-loaded information and plenty of room for more, etc. As a bonus, she even has an impressive humor module that, though developed via a different process than my own, shares a very high degree of compatibility with it.
-
@djls45 modules? so... can you load like a heavy weapons pack in place of the wisdom or whatever? Or totally min-max out the intelligence modules and... uh... profit?
-
@Gribnit I'm not sure the wisdom component would be the best for anyone to trade out, but that's not easily removed anyways. She could use heavy weapons with the right uploads to her memory archives and perhaps some conditioning of her physical framework or the addition of appropriate removable attachments (usually to the weapon). The intelligence module is slower to min-max (as is anyone's), but it is already mostly optimized for herself and her environment and connections, and it is above average as far as I can tell.

this doesn't sound very modular.

Well, it was, but it interconnects with everything else, and as the system optimizes, in integrates more fully with the rest, so now it's no longer an individual component.

Can't find the article again, but it was in Dutch anyway.
So there's a series of strikes with roadblocks in France the last few days causing quite some annoyance to people trying to actually use the roads.
The article described a group of opponents of the roadblocks going undercover and distributing soup to the strikers.
Soup laced with laxatives.English report:

I'm reading 'Everything is racist' thread right now and when I clicked a notification from this thread I haven't yet fully switched my mental context so when I saw "If this iPod ad campaign ran today it would feature over 18 different adapters." my first thought was "Indeed the ad with 4 people silhouettes all coloured black wouldn't fly in 2018, they'd have to make 18 people of different shades to be diverse."
