@coldandtired a for you. But generally, the time zones go from north to south, so unless you're already really close to the east/west edge of one, the time zone generally won't change if you go north or south.
-
@anotherusername Generally, I agree. I just didn't know if the joke was about the place names, or the clocks, or the company name itself (World Series...).

There are some very wavy borders to keep states or cities (or even countries) in the same timezone.
-
@Karla yes, yes. I have seen timezone maps before.
And while it's certainly possible that going north or south will send you from one time zone to another, I still wouldn't expect a company called "North/South Express Delivery Service" to be crossing a whole lot of them.
-
@anotherusername Yes, I know and that is why I said he
I was just explaining why he might have been confused.

@anotherusername said in The Official Funny Stuff Thread™:
you just have to know that our timezones work about the same as your timezones
So you have to know about those cities being in the same time zone or at least where they roughly are on a map ... yeah totally no geographic knowledge required
-
-
@Luhmann I would also argue that it's not super obvious that a delivery company would have the clocks for places it delivers to on its wall.
-
@coldandtired I still don't get what the actual joke is...
-
It's common for larger companies with offices in multiple areas to have clocks up for each city. And the four cities shown are pretty much in a straight north-south line. But unless you live in the Midwest, you might not know that.

But "North / South Express" is a clue.
-
@Luhmann I think you could deduce the fact that they're all north/south of each other from the name of the company, and the fact that all the clocks are the same, without knowing much of anything about U.S. geography.
As in, you'd first notice that all the clocks are the same, and in trying to figure out why they're the same you'd notice the name of the company says "North/South" and that would be enough information to figure out the joke.
-
@Jaloopa said in The Official Funny Stuff Thread™:

The joke is that they have clocks for all the places they deliver. But since all the locations they deliver are North/South, the clocks are all the same.
-
@anotherusername I didn't even notice the clock values at first. I just knew those cities are all in the same time zone and that it would be stupid to have a clock for each one. But I also live in the Midwest.
-
@anotherusername said in The Official Funny Stuff Thread™:

is that common? I think I'm just missing out on some context here, because nothing in the picture or the explanations seems humorous to me at all

It's not really a delivery company thing, but it's a thing. @mott555 explained it:

Do you normally change timezones when you travel NR T H / SU T H in your part of the world? You don't have to know about US geography, you just have to know that our timezones work about the same as your timezones... the time changes as you go east/west.
Take any point on the planet.
Go north or south at least 20,000km.
Congratulations, you are now in a new timezone.

You could feasibly go north or south until you'd be standing in all of them at once, but at that point you can't go any further north or south. The only place on earth where it's even possible to go 20,000km north is if you're inside a smallish circle around the south pole, and vice versa for going 20,000km south.
-

Depends on which north/south pole you go towards.
-
@aliceif unless you pick a different one every time you can't go any further toward the one you had been heading toward (because you're on top of it), it doesn't really matter.
-
@Lorne-Kates what if I go approximately 25,484km? I'm not going to be in a new timezone then!
-

The magnetic poles aren't on 0°N / 0°S
-
@aliceif right, but you'd need to pick one (geographic or magnetic) before you started heading toward it. And once you reach it, you can't go any further toward the pole that you chose.
You could zig zag between the magnetic and geographic poles, but saying that you were moving continuously "north" would be a stretch; you'd have to keep redefining "north" in order to continue moving toward it.
-

Strictly speaking, you could burrow through the Earth, following the field lines and thus enable yourself to perpetually go towards the north (or south) pole :)
After all:

Ah, yes. The blue areas are sane and do not observe daylight savings time. The orangish areas have something wrong with them and do observe DST, thinking that it will somehow save them money.

No, that would be the equator.
-
@Rhywden but going toward the north pole by way of the south pole is called going south...
-
@anotherusername Only until you get to the pole; beyond that point, you're going north.
-
@HardwareGeek that's kind of what I've been saying this whole time.

Technically ... the République démocratique du Congo not to be confused with République du Congo or Congo-Brazaville.
