Apparently, it's alright for recruiters to be rude and thoughtless, but never ever hurt their feelings. Some of them will actually call people and have in-progress applications pulled because telling them you're not interested in having your time wasted again is "unprofessional." That's too bad, especially for their clients, but, hey, there are plenty of other recruiters fishing for those jobs...

Recruiters have feelings? I thought only sentient beings could have them.

Funny thing is--I've interacted with several education recruiting firms specialized in independent schools. And they've always been polite, helpful, and competent.

I'd imagine the more specialised the recruiters, and therefore the more limited their pool, the better they have to treat candidates. A recruiter for programming positions can search LinkedIn and find hundreds of
hot milfs in your citypeople looking for work with the right skills, but teachers who are looking for independent schools are more worth trying to foster a good relationship with

Status: Looking like a good chance of a 4-day weekend. Dorian's supposed to make landfall on the east coast of Florida sometime Monday and be overhead (or nearby) on Tuesday. I doubt (unless something goes really wonky) that I'll see anything more than decent winds (~70-80 mph) and lots of rain, but school's not going to be a thing if that's the case.
I think I've been infected with Florida Man--I'm not even going to start worrying unless it looks like a Cat 3+ when it's overhead. I did buy some water and snacks, but

The important question: do you have a satellite Internet connection & power generator as emergency backups?I have buried power lines and a (small) UPS....so no.
Seriously, when Irma came through it was a Cat 3 and went straight overhead. I lost power for a total of....500 ms? Just long enough to blip the clocks. Total damage in the neighborhood was a few newly-planted trees got knocked over. Not thrown, just knocked down because the root ball hadn't merged with the rest of the ground yet.
I'll put storm shutters on my back (exposed, large) window if it looks like anything above TS levels. Otherwise, gonna play FFXIV unless I can't due to outages.

@Jaloopa If you're just looking for "developers," sure, there are a million people that can spell VB. Good developers, though, are a different story. But this experience is just reminding me how absolutely terrible employers are at finding, let alone retaining, good people. This recruiting firm that just blacklisted me? They're the second of three middlemen between me and this prospective employer. The state has HR people, but they go through OST, that then goes through a network of mostly overseas recruiters, and this recruiter in particular had me do a video interview with yet another company (to verify my tech credentials because apparently neither OST nor the recruiter was qualified to do so), before "forgetting" to submit my application last time (which is what I expect happened the other two times I was ghosted by them as well).
And we just got rid of the civil service commission this year because it was "inefficient" and "making it difficult" to find qualified people. You just can't make this stuff up. It's a fucking bozo explosion and it would probably be kind to describe the situation as C players searching for D players.

But I am extremely amused.

@Zenith what does hiring developers have to do with original sound tracks?

I have slept 4.5 hours last night, according to fitbit. My productivity is already low enough as is.

The Lounge is nice, but the Garage is where the real fun is. Your productivity will no longer be low; it will be negative.

Well, I'd've gone to bed earlier if @djls45 hadn't summoned me.
Not that I'm blaming him for my bad sleeping habits, I would've gotten to little sleep anyway.

Status: Aw man, my D&D group picked up on the direct "Are you SURE?" I gave and bailed on their ambush plans. It was going to be fun. The sort of thing where even if they won without direct witnesses...they'd still derail the campaign. And if they failed, they'd have been sold into slavery to the guys they were ostensibly working for. Sucks when people take the cautious option

Subtlety fail.
It's refreshing to see a DM who wants the campaign to get derailed, though.

My exact phrasing (via discord as I was planning for their proposed ambush and realizing the ramifications):
As a clarification/warning after starting to plan for Thursday's ambush: the course you all have chosen will be quite difficult. Both the encounter itself, as well as the possible consequences even if everything goes well. You're more than welcome to go forward--it won't break the campaign, but it may change some things substantially. Just fair warning.
And I love when players seize the reins and "break things"/go sideways. Most of my enjoyment comes from seeing people take the setting I've built and messing with it.

@Zenith Have you tried Triplebyte?
-
@pie_flavor I think you mentioned this before. What ended up happening was that they only supported 3 cities for actual jobs, so I applied to be a remote interviewer and never got a score for a quiz I don't think I even ended up taking. The delay referenced was 2 weeks because I guess their robot couldn't send this canned response sooner:
"My apologies for the delay in responding to your application. We have had a huge number of applicants for this position and have gotten a bit behind on responding to folks.
Thank you for applying to be one of Triplebyte’s remote interviewers and for taking the time to complete our quiz. We reviewed your quiz score and questionnaire answers and have decided not to move forward with your application. Thank you for your patience with this process and best of luck with your job search.
Unfortunately, we can't give individual feedback at this stage of our process."
Edit: I like this bit printed before you take the quiz, ripped straight from the Google customer service playbook:
"Note: You'll get three chances to take the quiz. If you don't pass the first time, no problem. We'll give feedback and resources to help prepare for your next attempt."

Used random orbital polisher to apply Rain-X on windshield, rear window, and front side windows. Waiting for rain.

@pie_flavor Might be on the west coast where those supported cities are. The list of companies they're bragging about are all west coast.
Right now I'm talking to a recruiter that doesn't seem to understand that I can't open ICS calendar files sent to an e-mail account accessed by webmail. I don't have the wild hatred of Outlook some people do but it's just never been an option for me outside of a work environment. When the heck am I supposed to do, download these and put them on my work calendar and confuse her even further?
Jesus. This is like all those people that want Facetime or some webcam app to do an interview. Do they know where I'm located? I drove past 3 sets of horse and buggy last time I went to a mall. I don't know what part of that is worse, the horse and buggy or the mall.
-
@Zenith Outlook is far from the only thing to support .ICS files.
