Well, 99% happening. Not exchanged yet, so not totally certain, but I'm expecting to complete a week Monday, and I've just sent 10% of the purchase price to my solicitor. Now to arrange a million and two other things.

/dev/zero
onto all the disks was such a cpu intensive operation? How's that possible considering disks are orders of magnitude slower than CPU?
(And a sane implementation would of course re-use a single page of zero bytes it sends to the controller, but alas)It's probably something stupid, like "for cryptographic security,
/dev/zero
must not perform any differently than/dev/urandom

Waiting for a physical server to reboot is like a game of chicken. Do you get up and go check on it in the data center? Maybe if you just wait one more minute it will come up remotely and be fine? But what if there's a problem?Edit: and it literally just came up as the first upboat for this post came in

Status: Actual question I'm asking my creative director right now; I hate everything:
If someone is playing the game, and they get a game over because of bad decisions, and then they ask for help, and then they try to quit, and then they get a real game over due to time expiring, and then the idle timer pops up the quit overlay, what happens visually and what does the back stack look like?

I'm jealous of him, mine only lasted over a day when I trained for about an hour solid. Usually it's on the order of half an hour. My visual system has done strange things by itself before, so I'm a little surprised it's not more interested.

STATUS: Active Directory password expiry day. Account keeps getting locked out. I'm working from home.
We have a helpful tool which shows locked AD accounts and where the lock out came from and I can see the lock outs are coming from one of my Windows desktops - unhelpfully the one that's also decided it doesn't want to allow RDP connections. It's Friday so there's no-one in the office who can kill it.
Guess I'll have to go in just for that.

It's only when I deliberately seek out a set of contrasting black and white bars. And it's really faint; if you didn't know to look for a colour difference you probably wouldn't even notice.

I'm happy now that I was too to stare at it long enough.
I did see some other color effects, i.e. the usual "you look at color red long enough that everything becomes less red when you look somewhere else", but not the one described.

@dcon Why does it need prescription food?
If it's because of a serious condition that really make any other food impossible, I pity the poor thing who's going to be hungry because of things it's not responsible for.
If it's because other food cause some, hem, unwanted effects at the other end of the digestive tract, then, well, I pity you who will be handling those unwanted effects when you give it some other food for a day!

My corgis are about that age, but their agility consists almost exclusively of making a mad dash for the food zone whenever they think there's food to be had. Otherwise, it's rolling over for a tummy rub, strolling from one nap spot to another, or, for the female, some very serious but not agile derping after a walk.

Status: One of the great (from a user point of view; to developers it was Yet Another Annoyance) features of Windows Phone is that there were separate audio channels for voice calls, announcements (e.g. navigation), sound effects, and music, with appropriate defaults for autoducking, et cetera. More specifically, you could write a music player, podcast player, or audiobook player, and it would just work everywhere, with contention resolution and lock screen controllability for free, batteries included. The best part is that apps whose main point was not such things could borrow the music channel, but if something else was playing, it'd keep playing: "use your tunes in our game", fully working, for free. And if apps abused it, they got the boot. Sadly, with the last Windows Phone leaving extended support this October, I've switched to Android...
Today I tried to listen to Super Hexagon EP in Bandcamp, while playing Plague Inc, and I got a Lync call. To say things went kind of poorly is to say that the Atlantic Ocean is kind of damp.

Status: Witness my frustration!
This represents an impulse input, intending to bring the Hand.World closer to the Hand.Rel position. I've set it to impulse every 20 ticks or so, so I can try tracking a positioning glitch that's causing chaos.
That "Moving Direction" line represents that an impulse was sent to move the character this tick, so in theory the next tick the location should update and thenceforth nevermore, until the next impulse.
But, Unreal Engine is shitty and broken, and non-deterministically updates the location eventually to where it ought to have been all along.
Normally, this impulse is applied every tick, because in theory the Hand.Rel position is correct on the next tick, but apparently it is not, and so the calculations are wrong and insanity ensues.
Sigh.

Status: Windows is fucking amazing.
I'm trying to launch Putty.
If I double-click on the file of which one is already launched (but partially crashed), Windows will failed to load it, citing error 0xc0000006 (or something).
If I click one that's a folder higher (yes, for some reason I have two copies on this disk), it launches fine.
What the shit?
Now, after closing the crashed instance, both work fine.
Ugh.
-
@TwelveBaud That's strange, Android supports seperate audio levels for (almost) all of those too. Sounds like Lync probably uses Media audio when it definitely should use Call audio instead. Unfortunately yeah, games and music are jammed into the same one.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Does putty allow multiple instances? Could be the crashed one left an orphan process behind that was locking things. Why do I guess at this?... looks skyward, whistling Let's just say our app does that and I have to make use of taskmgr...
-
@dcon said in The Official Status Thread:
Does putty allow multiple instances?
It should do; there's no particular reason why having a connection open to one host should preclude connecting to another. But if you do this, give each one a different background colour to avoid embarrassing confusion.

status Taxes done and mailed. I hate CA. Because I'm not about to pay $15 to email so I can pay them $6, I have to mail the 17 pages of printed stuff. Because not only is their return 2x longer than the fed, they want a copy of the fed too. (efiled fed since that is included in the H&R software I used)
Now I get to wait and find out if I owe a penalty for
overunder-withholding because those tax cuts worked just so well! (I even adjusted my exemptions to deal with that - obviously, not enough.)

No, for not loaning them enough. I had to pay $3600. In other words, the withholding in each paycheck should have been more. (I meant under-withholding - I'll fix that)
