Status: Starting my first programming project in months. Hopefully this one is one I'll actually make some money on. Only a moderate sense of remorse over not using this time to bugfix/update the three or so other projects that people keep asking me to bugfix/update.

WTF, I was typing a comment you jerk!

No, because the other VMs in the server box are fine.
Ugh, every time I have to log into it I remember why I greatly dislike Windows 8's UI...

Yeah, I probably should. I need to stand up a second box anyways in preparation to move all my VMs to bhyve...

Dunno, I'm still wondering what Windows is installing if it's supposedly waiting for me to click the "Yeah, lets go!" button:

Never heard of it. Now I'm suspecting there are more sites I've never heard of and I'm missing out on some really good porn without knowing it.
It was a plain image and video hosting site, it intentionally lacked any search or "front page gallery" features, you had to be linked to a page from somewhere else. You may have used it without realizing.
Of course, like all "let's have a user friendly site without annoying ads!" projects, it ended up bankrupt. However, just closing the site and deleting all data rather than giving up and adding ads (or selling it to someone who would) was very stupid.

Unfortunately no, looks like that's not the problem. It's probably the WSUS server being stupid again...

It's been growing steadily foggier all day - from nothing but some cloud in the sky when I walked to work to being quite closed in by mid-morning. It's now 2pm and it's not only very foggy as judged by visibility but weirdly dark. Honestly, it's starting to feel quite spooky.
Meanwhile BBC weather is still claiming 'warm sunshine' should be taking over from the few showers' that were possible this morning and hasn't made any mention of fog.

STATUS: Long-term planning is good. So, with at least a couple weeks of advance notice, the caretaker here was to prepare a few laptops (nuke-and-pave) to be done by morning today so another colleague could do some configuration before their use tomorrow. Apparently, the caretaker thought today was a good time to start working on them. And not morning today (the time they were supposed to be ready), but today in the afternoon. Because the process is so flawless it will only take a moment.
Well, it's now 17:00 and he's still working on getting the computers ready, because of course there's issues. Also, insistence on trying to install the broken drivers from Lenovo instead of the working drivers from Intel. Meaning overtime for both him and my colleague, but moreso for my colleague who has calculated the needed time for his preparations is 3 hours, hence why he had scheduled time to do it this morning so he could go home at normal time tonight, even if something was to go wrong.
And in a related : The former caretaker here had a PXE server on its own switch so he could nuke-and-pave several laptops at once, as that happens often enough here that there's a need for it. New caretaker thinks that's too much effort, so he has the image on a USB harddrive, meaning he can nuke-and-pave one computer at a time.

Status: Microsoft starts officially selling their Mixed Reality headsets tomorrow. The ones on their store now all have motion controllers, and the samsung is legit higher resolution than the rest (Though only by 160 vertical pixels I guess?), AMOLED, and built in headphones and mic.
I just want the motion controllers really. But I already know I like the platform, and having a second one doesn't sound BAD...
I probably won't do it. But somehow it's tempting.
-
@magus Huh. And the Samsung kit is $100 cheaper than an HTC Vive, and they're supposed to work with SteamVR...
Tempting.

Yes. Although I'd need a new graphics card to handle it, as mine is now several years old.
-
@e4tmyl33t I don't think they support SteamVR out of the box; Microsoft is in discussions about it with Valve, and they intend to do it, but they haven't said when. Having said that, Minecraft and Superhot will be compatible on launch from the sound of it, and the basic cliff house interface is possibly worth buying one of these for. This is what it looks like with the Fall Creators' Update:

And yes, you can have a floating window for each of your physical desktops; not sure about virtual ones.

Clearly a local invasion is occurring.

@magus Turns out Samsung's doesn't come out until November 6th anyway. Hopefully the store will have the motion controllers by themselves tomorrow :/

Offer valid for select Windows Mixed Reality Headset with Motion Controllers only during pre-order period (October 3, 2017 through November 6, 2017) from a Microsoft online store in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, and Germany, while supplies last. Limited quantities available.
For Samsung's. So I wouldn't worry. The others shouldn't be on pre-order after tomorrow.
-
@magus Cool, I might look into it. Although looking at the prices, it's still a bit more than I want to pay.
Interestingly enough, the relative prices don't quite match between the US and Canadian stores:
-
@hungrier I have the HP one, and there's still a visible screen door effect somewhat, and text can still be blurry sometimes, but we're basically at the point where the software is ready for general use, but the hardware is still getting there.

.... Or my disk is full. Again. Deleted a memory dump so now I have almost 500 Mb.
I may prioritize updating to Server 2016 on the new system higher than before. 25 Gb just isn't enough to run a full Windows Server anymore...

Hahaha.
I've been doing caffeine pills for a while, because they're stupid cheap on Amazon now. (I think it was about $8 for 100 tablets. Take that, ThinkGeek, ya greedy fuckers.) But... I haven't given up coffee.

Yeah, no shit. As you say though, it's free in the office, so pretty good value as a caffeine delivery mechanism...

Yeah, but IIRC many of the things I need it to be doing can't be run in Core mode for raisins.
I think what I'll end up doing it putting everything I can on a Nano instance, and hopefully RSAT will take care of everything else that needs to be on a Core instance, and everything else that needs a full.... You know what, screw it, I'll just ensure it has a sufficiently large disk this time...

Yeah, I actually meant Nano, but if something doesn't work on Core it likely won't work on Nano either.
Expanding disk is never a bad idea.

Although it tends to ask for an external USB to be plugged in to be able to install big updates.
