Naw, the VM is running Debian stable. I also wouldn't run a production webserver on a non-server OS.

@Tsaukpaetra I thought hangouts was the official Google-recommended one, at least on AOSP, at least at some point. Like I said I've been using third-party ones (Handcent until I got tired of the ads and "bonus" features I didn't want, now Textra) for years.
Hangouts dropping SMS support doesn't make it third party, it just means Google wants to shuffle its cards with their recommendations again.

I had a thought kind of along the same lines about mead when I went to a meadery a while back. I had thought it would be sweet and viscous, but the same way that wine and grapes are different, mead and honey are too.

Weeelllllll, they're technically the same volume, just exposed as different disks in the OS. Which, even being in Raid, doesn't seem to help. Probably because synchronous writes. Or something.
Anyways, now that's done..... Apparently the files are corrupted in some way. Because of course they would be.
So, recompiling the whole engine (because I guess it's not compiled anymore?) and seeing if that somehow helps.
Because fucking Unreal...

You can select text normally by long pressing it, which I did just the other day. But I just tried this feature and it's way better. When you click on a bubble one of the menu options pre-selects the entire thing and you can adjust the selection, instead of fiddling around with the normal interface.
The fiddly bit with the default method is trying to select the very beginning of text. This one avoids that.

No, what I'm saying is that in vanilla Hangouts, you can't do that. You can tap-and-hold to get a menu to "Copy text, Forward, View details, View profile", but selecting text in the message feed? Impossbru!

STATUS: Working mixed with looking up info about ongoing home projects. Found a motherboard for my "retro" computer. Now to decide if I should run XP 32-bit or XP 64-bit so I know how much RAM to get for it. MB supports 8GB, but I think I only got 1GB sticks available, so going for 8 would mean an extra purchase.
As for my other computer project I caused a kernel panic by enabling the integrated sound card. I think it will get to stay disabled as I doubt it'd be useful for my setup anyway. Also, my current screens are a bit too old methinks. They only got DVI+VGA inputs. I could use something more modern, with a couple digital inputs at least.

Or not.
All
.doc

file icons are now the default "unknown file" ones. They are set to open with Word, they open fine, but they are all white. Also, Word complains about "Word 2016 isn't the default program for viewing and editing... yadda, yadda, woe is you! Want to fix?". Yeah, sure Word, why not.... "To change the default application go to Settings > ..."Oh, jeez thanks, could've opened that for me? No? Ok, then don't offer it! Sigh, whatever, open default applications thing and... Everything is set up correctly? Huh.
Ok, programs and features, Office, repair... same shit. Click this, click that, nothing works.
EXCEPT.
"Reset default applications to Microsoft recommended" fixes it. Great. Now everything else is fucked.
MS, this shit used to work. STOP BREAKING SHIT!
-
@Onyx said in The Official Status Thread:
Oh, jeez thanks, could've opened that for me?
that's actually a feature MS had to add because shovelware was messing with preferred apps without user involvement.
see before windows ten it wa sknown what registry entries were used to set application preferences so all sorts of apps just installed themselves as your preferred app, even if literally the only reason they were installed at all is the OEM preloaded them. now with windows 10 the OS detects when these registry entries are messed with outside of the preferred applications setting wizard thing, and when it detects the corrupted settings it resets them to the system defaults, because at least then it's going to be consistent and removes the chance of you getting malware/crapware hooking into the preferred apps unless you set them as the SYSTEM preferred apps, which again can't be set outside of settings because if they are they'll be flagged as corrupted and reset to microsoft defaults.
and all this because of crapware trying to do things the user didn't want.
-
@accalia I'm fine with it preventing changes. Opening the dialog though, that can't really be that hard? Maybe with an overlay or something that tells you which application opened it and what type of file it wants changed?
Microsoft Word is asking for permission to be set as the default application for these file types: .doc .docx Do you want to change these preferences? [Yes] [No]
Clicking yes leaves you in the settings thing, no closes it. There. About the same amount of clicking as that dialog it pops up now in case you don't want to change stuff, about four clicks less if you do.
Or, use a notification that opens settings if you click on it. There. Even less annoying.
PROFIT!

Have you ever tried to catch a fly? It's pretty tricky. You have to wait until it's stopped, then "grab the air" above it so that it will fly right into your hand.
Well, I just saw a cat catch one, with his tiny little paws, on the very first try. Just went and stomped on it. Then he ate it.
-
@accalia said in The Official Status Thread:
and all this because of crapware trying to do things the user didn't want.
And their efforts will go unpraised, as people will lay 100% of the blame on Microsoft for not guessing that such a feature would be abused 25 years ago.
-
@accalia said in The Official Status Thread:

They fixed that in Windows 8 by not allowing programs to change default programs, but instead opening the "default apps" screen whenever they tried to. Which makes sense. Program requests change, user confirms request.
Then in Windows 10 they instead show a stupid dialog that says "To change the default application go to Settings > whatever". What's the point? Why can't they open those settings for me? It'd be far less annoying.
-
@anonymous234 said in The Official Status Thread:
What's the point?
because the change in windows 8 caused more user complaints as those misbehaved apps that tried to set your apps without your consent kept trying to set your apps which kept opening the dialog.
and of course Midrosoft is just trying to make the best possible user experience possible given the existing ecosystem that is unfortunately infested with apps that are misbehaved. and of course people constantly blame Microsoft for that instead of the apps that abused them and Microsoft is trying to rescue them from their abusive software.
