Wait, does that mean webservers running Windows need a separate license per user of the website?
It's okay, Javascript is single thread so nothing's concurrent.

There is a specific exception for "Web workloads"

Reading their blog post on the subject
Bull. Fucking. Shit.
Next scenario: We're going to (eventually) get a pen-test (which we will likely fail spectacularly on), and I have to imagine: Say the pen tester simulated an attack on the network which simulated thousands of computers trying different things to the server for probing purposes. I then need thousands of CALs to support this?
Am I wrong? What the hell?!?!?
Their EULA and CAL agreements are basically impossible to stay in compliance on. They are extortionary in practice.
Windows Server is the only software out there that is basically unusable in it's OOB baseline. You pay $700 for a retail license and then you need to buy more shit to even legally use it.

There was only one actual computer connected. It needs 1 CAL.
Ah, but how would they tell? Because as far as I can tell, VMs count as individual devices.
Sure, it would be "more cost efficient" to say they were using 1 "user" CAL (or not, technically they could be attempting to impersonate any number of users, so that's hella grey), but that's not really the thing, is it?AFAIK MS audit procedure involves them rolling in, counting servers, counting devices, counting users, reconciling versus licenses you own and then an amount of negotiation. In almost every case, there aren't any magical authoritative licensing logs for them to look at (excepting things like enterprise OS activation servers)
They aren't going to know about your pentest guy even existed unless he's there at the same time, and they aren't going to sweat you over good faith security testing.
@Weng said in The Official Status Thread:
Also, FFS people, segregate your fucking guest networks.
Our employees aren't guests, but their phones are "accessing" the server, so CAL!
Their company phones? You fucking bought them, you should have bought a CAL too.
Their personal phones? Oh, you're one of those places. Idiot tax for thinking you could get something for free!Is it being used for company business with the company network apps? If not, GUEST NETWORK.

Wonder how that looks like on Microsoft's books, or perhaps they're using the "They're 'anonymous users'" "Web" license...

I ran said tool, and it claims no computer has accessed the three (there are currently two) servers in the domain. So I should be fine anyway, right?

That's actually not that unreasonable. The worst I've heard is Oracle quotes (since they license per PHYSICAL CPU, they won't recognize vCPUs, unless you're on their cloud). So if you're on an ESXi host with 8 vCPUs allocated to your VM, but the host has 128 CPUs, you've got to pay the license fee for 128 CPUs. Ridiculous. Absurd, especially when by the nature of cloud computing, you might not know what host you're on at any given time. If I recall correctly, Software AG also charges around $250,000 for a "cloud" license that accommodates virtual machines.
I guess the moral of the story is licenses have really got to catch up with the realities of the time (unless we've gotten locked-in to vendors... OH FUCK).

Well, this is coming in competition for my next request, full replacement for these worthless $320 disks that keep disconnecting from the NAS. brand fucking new, and they can't stay connected, their controllers just keep locking up for who knows why...

The real moral of the story is that friends don't let friends do Oracle.

Status: Lost in performance tuning hell, send help.
Just lost an hour to figuring out why my re-written CTE wasn't producing the same results as the original stored procedure... "fixed" that and the CTE was 20x worse than the original procedure, so threw it out and started over... re-wrote another attempt at it that was almost identical to the way I wrote the first CTE... looked at what I was doing the first time, and figured out that the query I was using to get my baseline dataset was actually NOT the query the original procedure used, but a variation I had experimented by moving a WHERE clause out of a sub-query and into the main query, which changed the result set considerably (but I hadn't checked because just moving the WHERE clause didn't help the execution plan / workload).
