STATUS Very annoyed. This is the second time I've threatened to cancel my paper subscription and this is the second time that they have discounted it. Fuck disloyalty rewards.
I did. They raised my rate 50%. Sure I can afford it, it's the principle. 10 or 20%, I wouldn't have flinched. 50%? Fuck you. When I called, 'oh, we can offer you a 50% off rate'. Yeah, no, you lost your chance - and I'm not going to constantly fight for a new discount when this one runs out. Besides, the internet. Everything is true here and and ... oh god I can't finish that...

I posted something about that on FB - basically, 'yeah, we lost. Stop acting like a 5 yr old throwing a tantrum'. I really shouldn't have been surprised at the reaction to that... even from people who never said they would leave (um, that wasn't directed at you?). Seriously tempted to just delete that post now...

Status: Did the pluralsight C# experience test, and got the 97th percentile on my first try. I wasn't satisfied, so I tried it again, and got more answers wrong: I ended up in the 98th. And that's only because I was panicking about the timer, and didn't think hard enough about the answers.
I don't think it's a very good test.

Huh? If you got more answers wrong, your percentile score should have gone down, not up. And I'd be pretty happy with a score in the 97th percentile on a test; I've done better on some tests, but 97 is darned good.

It's possible, if the difficulty of each question was taken into account, and he got significantly more hard questions the second time round.

97 seems... really high. I know a lot, but I didn't think I knew that much, or that the questions were terribly hard. There's much harder stuff than they asked, at least.

My prediction: it will only get worse. As the two parties continue their race to the center, they have to escalate the apparent polarization in order to preserve the illusion of choice.
At least don't make people think they're only be able to elect whose less suxk.
The previous 2 sessions of Taiwan President Election provides nice demonstration on how to do that.

It's all about perception.
It'd feel far better if the candidates can stop focusing on blaming others for their wrong-doings in the past, and just focus on why should the citizens vote for them, and what they could bring the citizens when he/she wins.
-
@cheong said in The Official Status Thread:
what they could bring the citizens when he/she wins.
Never happen.
- The candidates would need to have real plans, or at least reasonable facsimiles thereof.
- They would have to explain their plans in one-syllable words.
- The masses still wouldn't understand, because reality is complicated.
- But it wouldn't matter whether the masses could understand the explanations, because they'd never get to hear them; even if simple explanations were possible, they wouldn't fit in the 15 second sound bites that masquerade as "news" these days.
It's so much easier and more effective to just attack your opponent.

There's a reason that most of the news on TV is people reacting to news. That's a lot cheaper to produce than investigative reporting.

The #1 function of a politician is to get (re) elected.

And also more profitable than asking politicians very difficult questions that hold them accountable for their actions.
Because gotta have "access" to get eyeballs and clicks!

It's now time for the connecting wall. 16 fiendish clues jumbled about that must be sorted into four equal groups of four.
You'll get one point for each group you find, one point for each connection you name, and two bonus points if you get everything right.
Make sure to avoid the red herrings if they exist, as there is only one perfect grid. You have three minutes to solve it. Starting... now

Status: Tidy Desk Police strike again. Officially we have hotdesking, but it's not been a big issue because we have - just about - enough desks for all regular people to have a regular desk. We're required to leave it available to use if we're not here, but we have little laminated cards to note whether we are or not.
So it's never been a problem to leave teabags and coffee, or some pens, or what have you on your desk, as long as valuables and anything that could be construed as confidential are locked away and it's reasonably tidy with enough space for someone to work.
Now we're being issued 'personal trays' to bring things to and from our lockers every day so that we can clear away absolutely everything.
