Ha. We had an out-of-town bachelor party last night.
Turned in around midnight.
Up at 8AM.
Drove the group home, turned in the rental van, went home, slept from 1PM until 7PM.
15 hours of sleep and I'm JUST about recovered from a mere 5 hours of party.
The other room, of course, partied until 2AM 2.0: Electric Boogaloo. I'm sure the adjacent rooms loved it. I had requested the hotel give us adjacent rooms at the end of the hall to prevent just such an event (so we could box the noisy room off from the rest of civilization, but they decided two rooms directly across from each other would be better.

then I can think about voting Libertarian again!
Why don't you vote Libertarian right now? Johnson isn't perfect by any stretch, but compared to those two blubbering idiots he's a goddamn Abe Lincoln.
You guys really need to start thinking of an escape route for when all two of your major parties put out a retarded candidate. So far you've skirted the issue since the morons generally seemed to have come one at a time, but your luck has run away just about now.

Wait. This is Windows 8. I don't have to until I'm ready.
Benjamin Button would be pleased.

No, that's not how it works. If, after all the votes are counted, your vote was counted for someone other than the 2nd place candidate, you effectively voted for the 1st place candidate no matter who you voted for.
And I'm fucking tired of hearing people say they're going to sit this out because they don't like any of the presidential options. There are still a bunch of taxes and (STATE, not federal) judges to vote against, FFS!!
(this got a downvote? I'm just saying, if you want to vote against the presidential options, you can skip that question; there are a ton more items on the ballot that you can vote against. And if you've read up on your judges and you like some of them, feel free to vote "yes" for them, but it's not like they ever get voted out; Gary Johnson has a better chance of winning than any of the judges have of being removed. Unless you're aware of a widespread movement with significant support trying to vote a particular judge out, your "no" vote basically has a nil chance of actually hurting them.)

@Tsaukpaetra This happens to me too. Seems that moving the window to the other screen, full screening it, then moving the window back fixes the issue. Usually...

From one of our team's Slack channels (none of these were by me):
I can reproduce the problem with sqlite3, but I do not understand what is going on: When I use
Publication.find_by_title
the result is nil, when I usePublication.find_by_journal
the publication is there. It seems that if the string in ruby is not being marked as utf-8 encoded, it is inserted as binary in sqlite.
so if i read that file from the file system, it gets the encoding "
UTF-8
", but when it is read from the http file upload, it is "ASCII-8BIT
"i think the best solution would be to make sure it is read as UTF-8 from the http upload
this seems to work:
thefile.set_encoding('utf-8') content = Publication.parse(thefile.read)
Ruby string encoding shenanigans strikes again!

@Tsaukpaetra Obviously B.
A, C, and D all have four legs.
-
@Lorne-Kates I was trying to figure out where a thing was set.
Me trying this actually did expose the bug - it was set in the wrong place (in controller instead of the model, hence my problem with finding it in the first place).
So, same outcome, even less work! Woo!
-
@Maciejasjmj Because the points where I disagree with him are the points where his opinions are actually fucking dangerous to me personally.
I therefore decline to Feel the Johnson.

That's not how it works too. You don't try to game the system and guess who other people will vote. You vote in the one you believe is the better one, and accept defeat. Voting for the 2nd or the 3rd won't change things, it's the 1st one that will win.
Assuming that the other votes will be suboptimal and voting with them, you're giving too little credit for the others, and in the end, you're the one submitting a suboptimal vote.
-
-
@Lorne-Kates I'm tempted to give you the points, but I think it's just outside your interests. No.
-
@fbmac said in The Official Status Thread:

Then system games you. Because if it can find the perfect third-party candidate who has no chance of winning but is someone you'll support along with just a handful of other people, it's effectively nullified your votes.
To put it another way, if I'm about to ask a group of people whether they'd rather have pizza or wings for lunch, and I expect it to be a really close vote but I really want pizza and suspect that you might say wings if those were the only two options, and supposing I know that you actually dislike both wings and pizza but you absolutely love tacos and you (along with perhaps a small fractional minority of the others) will file a protest vote for tacos if I increase the options to those three, you'll never get your tacos and I'm more likely to get what I want.
-
@Jaloopa Given those two clues, solid attempt. No.
-
@JazzyJosh the annoying thing is I think I might have seen this episode.
-
@anotherusername y'all need proportional representation, then you can be ruled by 48% Hillary, 4% Trump and 4% Green
-
@Jaloopa that's been tried already here. What typically happens is a lot of men with guns come shoot at you until you consent to 100% rule by Abraham Lincoln.
-
@anotherusername If I dislike both wings and pizza, I already lost, there isn't anything I could do. One of the options would have to be good for your argument to make sense.
-
@fbmac PR in this case would provide flying pizza

Only if you dislike them exactly equally. If there's even a small difference in how much you dislike them, you're better off voting for the one you dislike less.
