@Fox Someone follows me on Twitter who has written and published Slenderman and Santa porn.

@Fox I have 3 subscribers on YouTube, which is weird because I've never uploaded (nor do I intend to upload) any videos.
Bots, I assume. Or people who misclicked.

I think I'd rather that than a couple dozen followers mostly comprised of straight porn bots. :P

Status: My laptop appears to have rebooted itself overnight in the bag. Except it didn't actually reboot, because Bitlocker. And no network access. It didn't say anything about installing updates; it's just really, really slow to start up, and all the applications I had open aren't open any more, of course. And the only application IT configured to start automatically started, but then vanished.
Thanks Win10. I'm so glad I'm never in the middle of anything important when it's time to go home.
-
Status: Things done during a conference call for which my involvement was minimal:
- Spoke up to say we would look into something that was asked (a feature request)
- Made a small post in the PBP game.
- Pointed out a bug in my co-workers code (config setting named "this", his code uses "that").
- Published an update for a site to go to testing, didn't deploy it yet.
- Purchased a copy of Secret of Evermore, complete in box.
And now it's noon, lets see if I can manage to have lunch sometime today, unlike yesterday.
-
Management (quite rightly in my opinion) put the ban hammer down today on Flexi-time for everyone, because half the young lads and ladies were taking the mickey (turning up at 10am and going at 5). Takes me an extra hour to go home as I have to leave at 5.30 instead of 4.30

I've cleaned women's hair out of a shower drain before, and it's certainly no picnic. But if you're spending FOUR HOURS on it, there's probably a severe problem somewhere. Either with your head, or with your drain...

Status: Just stupidly splurged on another late-70's Marshall guitar amplifier that was on a popular auction site for well under the going rate. (It was slightly modified which keeps the collectors away and the price relatively low, but it was a mod I would have done to it anyway, so win-win for everyone but my wallet.)

I have been dealing with a recruiter for a good job for a decent charity internation charity that has their UK HQ based near London. They are offering me a decent rate and I have a interview with their head of tech. I think most people know that a lot of recruiters are scumbags, but the recruiter I am dealing with is a good guy IMO.
I got phoned up by a large recruitment company in the UK at 7.45ish and he sounded like Danny Dyer. For those who don't know who Danny Dyer is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir--7xxDGl4
He was recruiting for the same job, the scumbag was trying to get me to tell him who the other recruiter was and to for me to go with him for a "higher rate". Normally once you tell them "I been put forward for it" they back off.

Currently having a group discussion in which we plan a bachelor party.
Goals:
0) Go somewhere we don't usually go- Brewery tour
- Sit around getting sauced on excellent craft beer until the early hours of the morning, reminiscing about how the groom used to be cool and would go to strip clubs.
- Pass out in a couple of hotel rooms
The discussion opens with "Anywhere inside the red ring should be within easy transportation range"
Naturally, the dominant feature of the ring (by land mass) is the vast empty wasteland of Pennsylvania. New Jersey doesn't have a meaningful craft beer presence. NYC is good. DC is good. Baltimore is okay. Philadelphia is okay. Everything else kinda sucks shit (except for the York/Harrisburg/Hershey/Lancaster pocket, but we've been there a lot).

Status: Today I worked on something I had never done before! Set up RAID-5 on a R730 server. Then installed Windows Hyper-V server (the free version! that is just hypervisor + shell) . And set up a remote Hyper-V Manager through my Windows10 + PowerShell. What amazed me was:
- how easy it was with iDRAC!!! It stays connected (over network) while the system boots and you can interact with it!!! It is all-around a much much better remote desktop (tomorrow will disable RD)
- How smoothly PowerShell interacts with the Hyper-V server! most commands have a
-Computer
option and evenCopy-Item
has a-ToSession
and-Session
that can copy files easily without setting up any shares. If PowerShell improves its command completion a little, I will be using it more. - Hyper-V manager itself was pretty good, but I have been using VirtualBox (with VMs on my own machine) with same level of comfort.
It might be business as usual for most of you server folks here, but very eye opening for me.

The main reason why some admins prefer remote desktop over iDRAC is that RDP support copy and paste files to remote session while iDRAC seems still does not support this yet.

Good point (I should check tomorrow) but with PoweShell you wont need that. iDRAC to set things up even before OS is up (or just to look around) then use PowerShell for everything. You can connect server, then hide it somewhere never to look at it again (until you want to add/remove physical disks perhaps).
I have not used any other hypervisor, what are other hypervisor-only options (no actual server, I know I can set up RedHat servers old fashioned way)?

I've only used Microsoft's Hyper-V server based on trimmed down version of Win2008, and VMWare's ESX server. Not sure if Oracle's VirtualBox has offered standalone hosting systems.
And based on usage I don't feel much difference on running guest OS inside these systems because these usually are used to host development servers.

@dse said in The Official Status Thread:

We use both VMware and Xen pretty extensively in our production infrastructure, but I don't know what they're like from a system management perspective. (IIRC, Xen is a bit lighter weight than VMware which matters for some of our systems, and VMware has better commercial support which matters a lot for some of our dimmer managers…)
-
@dse
I'll just throw out there that iDRAC is generally considered (extremely) insecure, especially relative to RD, and that opening up iDRAC to anything off LAN is a Brillant Idea.

@heterodox if you only need to escape a single backtick, use double backticks to enclose the code. If you only need to escape double backticks, use single backticks to enclose the code.
`test`
``test``

<pre>
...`test` ``test`` except now you'll have to escape <em></em>...
...or
<code>
...`test`
``test``
except now you'll have to escape `test` and <em></em>...Really your only good option at that point without messing with a bunch of escaping is the triple-backtick code block, which preserves everything inside without any escaping needed:
`test` ``test`` <em></em>

Everyday support. Or at least, that's the excuse I always got for why my overnight support guy who processed maybe a dozen or so overnight calls on a busy night couldn't ever make progress on the upgrade projects he was assigned.Apparently the phone was ringing so often it was exhausting, because he always sounded like we'd just woken him up whenever we had to call him for verification or assistance with our MOW hardware installations.
