After some research, turns out there is exactly one such service available today: https://liquidsky.tv/
It works very well actually. But 70ms between here and Frankfurt means it's useless to meI could try Amazon EC2 or Azure, but since the closest datacenter they have is also in Frankfurt, I don't think there'll be much a difference
I tried using Teamviewer to log into Wildstar on my desktop from my new Surface Pro 4 in a class during a time in which the professor was explaining something I already know, so that I could knock out a daily quest or two during that time. Turns out that UDP is still bad for holding down keys to move. I didn't have that bad of input lag, but any time I had even the slightest lag spike, my desktop would pick up rapid keypresses instead of the key being held down, and I would try to dash instead of running, and then stop.
I think I'll just end up installing some of my games on the Surface itself.

TWC customer service is pretty fucking terrible 90% of the time.

Ping is symmetrical
Technically, it's the round-trip time without dipping into user processes on the other end. When everything is working, it's a lower bound on the response time…

Status: Home lost power sometime during the day, long enough that my UPS couldn't keep the game server running. It lost power, and a few of the VMs on it are kapoot. But that's okay, I have backups, right?
Not anymore. I was using Trilead's free edition backup software for ESXi. HP bought Trilead, cancelled the free edition, and remotely deactivated all installed instances. I have backups, but no way to use them.
EDIT: Free edition still exists, but is no longer a Windows desktop application and now requires its own server appliance.

Wait, what? How does losing power unexpectedly screw up a few machines so badly that they're ruined?
Sure some recently-written data may be lost, but the whole damn thing?
WTF century do we live in?!?!?

I'm an idiot running ESXi on consumer hardware with no ECC and no RAID. The SATA controller seems flaky and I've had problems like this in the past, which is why I started doing backups with Trilead.

Ah. So you were just playing with toys then, and weren't really concerned at all with protecting your data integrity at all.

Basically, but I am slowly acquiring parts for a new dual-socket LGA 2011-v3 build using actual server-grade hardware. I guess I should add a much larger UPS to the budget.
It really sucks to have your backup solution remotely yanked from under your feet when you actually need it for something.

Why would anyone ever use an ISP's webmail?
Because I still have a couple accounts tied to it, mostly ones that don't allow you to change the email you've associated with them. I use Gmail for literally everything else though
I got a HIBP notification about one of those accounts, and wanted to make sure my email wasn't pwned too.

True this. I really need to test-restore my own services one of these days...

I thought that was just voodoo to protect against the evil spirits.
and no RAID
They invented a thing called journaling filesystems, and last time I checked they were pretty popular.
(Can I interest you in Hyper-V server? It's free and the next version comes out in a month)

Eeeehhhh. Not free, it needs a Windows Server OS.....

@sloosecannon Nope, Hyper-V Server is standalone and it's free!

I already have ESXi and it's free, and way better than Hyper-V though I admit I have not used Hyper-V in years.
@Fox said in The Official Status Thread:

It notified me when I tried to launch my backup software. (Actually, I got notified the same way at work a couple months ago when I was going to perform a new round of backups but had forgotten about it since then)

AT&T just offered to throttle my mobile data to 128kbps instead of charging me data overages.

It's not like that time a United States politician had their campaign website certificate show up as some sort of KKK website due to CloudFlare.

@anonymous234 said in The Official Status Thread:

If you're transmitting graphics over the network, you're gonna have a bad time.
I play Guild Wars 2 over remote desktop within my own house sometimes and even then the latency between me pushing a key and me seeing the result is horrible.
Now if you're running a game server in the cloud, that's completely understandable.

Ah, yeah, that sucks. I ran into that like 20 years ago and have made sure to use something like Hotmail or Gmail ever since.

Yeah, that happens when you use Cloudaflare's SNI HTTPS caching stuff. Still worth it though.

Maybe it likes to think so, but now I can't access my history and bookmarks straight from the New Tab page.
The only reason I found out that it was a slider thing was I accidently dragged the screen instead of tapping.

Status: Today I spent all day making a more powerful director for Alien Swarm. I also added the possibility that instead of spawning 30 basic aliens in a horde it'll spawn 30 of these:
They jump on your head and can't be killed without specialized equipment if they land before you kill them.
Curiously, the Alien Swarm Wikia has the feet and tail of the parasite colored incorrectly. They're supposed to be really bright so you can see it crawling around in the dark.
