put a fox in my bed to keep me warm.
That sounds cute. Too bad it would be considered a Bad Thing to post a pic about it in the Fox Ideas thread.

Little known fact, foxes ward off sickness by consuming the germs, purifying them, and then farting them out as sweet pine scented oxygen!!

Status: The University's ISP was under DDoS attack today. (“No internetz 4 U lolz!”) Got some work done, but shit was annoying. Capped off with a fire alarm. Might've been an evacuation test, but it was just the shit cherry on the excrement morning.
Afternoon was occupied by a Christmas Dinner and associated libations, so day very much not a complete loss.

Shudder!
Not that fox. I simply assumed that he was off to start a new furries nudist camp somewhere.

I didn't have any problems with it tbh. The ui didn't change much in 2015, mostly just the compiler and editor, which are what you'd want to change.

Status: BT Openreach installed the fibre for our leased line a month ago and tested the install as 'good' to the NTE.
Then we got notified that a switch in the exchange was bad and we couldn't have the line handed over until it was replaced.
Because we're using a government grant to get the line there are 3
useless middle-menentities involved above Openreacharound. Just got this from the top level supplier:Openreach have not yet received the switch and are chasing this up, the next update is due on 11/12/2015. If the switch is not received by this point then the order will be escalated by the supplier.
How long does it take to order a bloody switch, why isn't it a stock replacement item. How long is it going to take these idiots to install the sodding thing once they finally get it...

Call them up and ask how much compensation are they going to pay you for failure to provide service. Don't be nice about it; let them think that you're going to be carving out of their flesh with a dull knife.

I wish I had that leverage, at the moment the service hasn't officially started so we haven't even had the first invoice.
Edit: They've had a nastygram anyway, it's always good to get a chance to use the word 'unacceptable' in an email. I've asked for an immediate escalation, I have zero hope that the request will do anything tangible other than generate a placating email though.

I hope the answer to this question, at least, is "that same day". Switches are usually stupidly easy to install, and I can't imagine that trend changing all that much for different switches than the various ones I and my colleagues use and set up in under 30 minutes most of the time.
-

So? Call them up and pretend that you have. The worst that'll happen is that they get the impression that you'll be a bolshy customer once they get their together. Which isn't all that bad a position to be in in fact…

I have to spoonfeed my team tasks because they won't learn the system as a whole on principle and enjoy complaining about not knowing the big picture.

Status: Putting on my tinfoil hat. Apparently some "maintenance" from the ISP soft-locked the modem, and upon rebooting it now certain webmail domains suddenly "don't exist" according to our computers.
Clearing/flushing DNS doesn't help, and other connection methods (i.e. mobile hotspot) appear to work fine, but not through this connection.Apparently the solution is to force static DNS servers in IPv4 configuration to Google.
-
That sounds like a DNS proxy issue within the ISP's modem. Ye olde three finger salute (rebooting it, in this case via hard power cycle) may help with the issue.
Though if you're using the ISP's modem as your gateway and DNS server in a business environment, you're TR. At home is slightly less WTFy, but there's a whiff of problem there.
<shameless plug>http://routerboard.com/RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN (or their lower model the RB951G-2HnD) for a 2.4GHz wireless/wired router that will give you better performance and reliability than ye olde

First thing tried, that's what allowed the rest of the internet to "start working" again.
ISP's modem as your gateway and DNS server
Not. Modem is a modem (despite wanting to be a GW, it only has the one port), I ignore all settings given by it except IP, subnet, and Gateway IP. FWIW I'm using OpenDNS as the DNS provider. Directly querying them specifically (i.e. nslookup blah blah) still works .It seems that something broke inside the computer and it's no longer automatically querying DNS for those specific names on this particular network, attempting to do so through normal means (ping, browser of any kind, etc) results in an immediate "does not exist" response despite no packets reaching out to check, and despite that supposedly the DNS cache is supposed to be empty.

Status: Shitty commute has sapped any desire for me to perform work, even though all the work items I have are greenfield development and should in theory be relatively fun to do.
The 30 mile leg of my trip this morning took the exact same amount of time as the 1.5 mile leg. Because Seattle bus service is so quality-- I had two "phantom" number 40 buses pass me by this morning. ("Phantom" bus means they show up on the live bus schedule and on OneBusAway app, but they never actually show up at the stop.)

Status: Shitty commute has sapped any desire for me to ... oh wait that was Blakeys status. Finally home after shitty commute.
Chilling out waiting for my @Arantor to get home so we can have dinner.
In other news... the German business unit of my company has just asked if I can fly out to a hospital to check if they have 50GB of free space somewhere.
They were not happy when I said just buy a fucking external drive and don't call me with your trivial problems.

I thought Germans were efficient.

50GB of free space somewhere.
Yeah, floppy here, zip disk there, stack of papers in the CAB, I'm sure they could find it SOMEWHERE....

I tried "The cat vomited on my homework" once in elementary school. The teacher didn't believe me at first. She was not amused when I pulled out a plastic baggie containing a folded-up homework assignment drenched with dried, crunchy cat vomit.
I actually used "cat ate my homework" completely sincerely once. Had an assignment to create some kind of display with another student. After we finished, we folded the thing up and left it on the floor next to a desk (it was on one of those huge A0 rolls of paper). Overnight, his cat completely chewed off one of the corners, and scratched it up something fierce.
And then they ask me why I'm not a cat person. A dog would at least be, or pretend to be, sorry if I yelled at it after doing something like that. The cat didn't even stay long enough for me to finish the rant.
-
I dunno why people believe that. Germany really isn't. Highly regulated for sure, but not efficient.

Did you go to Openreach directly or through another provider? Which one?
The stack goes Openreach->Entanet->??->Local Telecomms Provider
I've been told ?? is 'T-Mobile' but that doesn't sound right, possibly some arm of the EE group of companies I guess
-
Status: Administrative assistant has just dragged a shipping pallet full of records boxes stacked 8ft high to our light duty office paper shredder and started feeding it stuff in 24 sheet wads.
Least efficient Enron job ever.
Though it is impressive that she managed to find a pallet, pallet jack and move that shit by herself on carpet.
(Her accumulated pile of "shit I need to shred" had taken over an entire cubicle of its own).
-
Highly regulated for sure, but not efficient.
Highly regulated and efficient rarely, if ever, go together.
-
Can't remember whether EE get involved in that stuff or not. Seems mental there's a reseller between the local provider and Entanet although I've seen worse.
It's not the company I work for if the mystery company is that side of Entanet at least.

Status: Valve hasn't backed-away from their utterly shitty move of forcing users to buy an Android or iPhone device to use all of Steam's features.
They did write a long post trying to justify it.
We've done our best to make the cost as small as possible, for as few people as possible, while still retaining its effectiveness.
Right; just shitting all over LITERALLY EVERY STEAM USER WHO DOESN'T OWN AN ANDROID OR IPHONE DEVICE. "Small as possible." Fuck you, Valve.

I've also seen kit swaps or upgrades in exchanges take much longer.
All telcos are incompetent. No exceptions.
