Re: New long name
Dear Mr. @PleegWat:
It has come to my attention that you have recently changed your long name to "The Unhatted Sword". I am writing to ask that you cease and desist use of this long name as it gives the impression that I have refused my hatting services to you. This is simply not true.
As evidence of my position, I refer you to the hatting I provided shortly after you switched to your current avatar. This hatting was provided on 18 February 2015, and can be found in post 831 of the 🎩 Mad Hatter Hijinx thread.
Please handle this matter with the utmost urgency.
Sincerely,
@abarker

Ok, I really have to ask now.
What freaking character should this be:
ﷺ Creator and Prophet of the Discopædia
Because it comes up as invalid to me. Not sure if my font or what, but that's the only one that does it in this whole damned place.

Great, so I'm missing Arabic?
But... Other people have what seem like Arabic characters in their long names. And I'm pretty sure many people wrote stuff in Arabic and it was all working fine!
There always has to be a special snowflake, doesn't it?

I didn't pick it! I got it from …
BRB, gotta check the title history on the Discopædia …

It doesn't work for me either. Not just on linux (where most of these things don't work for me) but I think even on windows it doesn't show up.
Not on windows right now to check though.

Perhaps we should make this a cloud share that ALL TDWTF users can map?

That almost sounded like a good idea.

Would that matter?
Almost nobody has fancy unicode stored locally - it's primarily an internet thing.
(This is just me as your inner voice talking, though)

If it's the entire
/usr/share/fonts
rather than just the "fancy" bits, I'd imagine so, yes.(This is just me as your inner voice talking, though)
It's ok, I quoted it for fine folks who live outside of my head.

Also, I am dumb!
It might work. But with
~/.fonts
instead.

Status: I just had a phone call with a client that ended something like this:
Client: "Sometimes I wonder what we pay you guys for, when your answer is almost always to reboot the machine."
(side note, they keep machines up for months at a time even though they have been told that is not the best of ideas)
Me: "Well, considering we still get a couple of calls a week where we ask you to reboot the machine and that fixes it, yet you never think to do that before calling us...you guys are a long way from the point where you will not need IT support."
Client: -long pause- "Fair enough. Good point. I think we will keep you guys around."

Yeah... This is getting silly...
EDIT: OK, now you're just trolling me!
Look at it! It's EMPTY? What do you do with an empty scrollbar? What? Just... NO!
EDIT the second: Oh. Oh you gotta be... The resize triggers after the modal shows. It overflows the body for a split second, then gets resized, and the freaking browser doesn't remove the scrollbar that does nothing.

I am currently reading Moby Dick. I stopped enjoying it about 100 pages ago but I am ploughing on as I am too far to give up, and also so I can say I've read it.

Status 6X% through the Cryptonomicon. Stephenson's writing style is so rambly and bizarre... but I so far haven't disliked any of his books.I thought a while back that I was nearing the end, and when I checked I was 1/3 in... This book is doing it even more than REAMDE did, and that was insane. Still like Anathem and The Diamond Age best.

and the freaking browser doesn't remove the scrollbar that does nothing
And what would you say if it did remove the scrollbar, thus causing a reflow, thus making the crappy software be just a little bit too long for the viewport again, thus making it show a scrollbar again, eventually resulting in your CPU exploding like on CSI:CYBER?

- How the hell would it do that if it resized horizontally only?
- That's my software you're talking about. Have some respect. It's not crappy. It's shitty.

You ruined it by doing the beta.
-
One thing that does give me hope is that they seem to be changing up a lot between builds. I'll wait for the final product.
Though my biggest issue is with the overall concept, and I guess they're not changing that - I actually liked how Win8 separates Metro-world from desktop-world, and they drove it to the ground completely.
And as for the beta - I did Win8 previews too, and ended up actually liking the system once it got fleshed out. Go figure.

Well, if you don't need to manage a modem or send crash reports, you should be fine.
-
Why don't you just stick to Ubuntu LTS releases?
-
If I wanted stability, I wouldn't have switched to systemd on my laptop.
Not that it's particularly unstable...
My network drivers seem to not like the 3.19 kernel, so it seems that I'm stuck on booting 3.16 until that's fixed.
