@TimeBandit we've got into this mess because this thinking is correct. If resources were limited, everything would be crashing every other second, but it doesn't.
he's got a point.meme
I mean, it's bad thinking. But it's not erroneous.
And to a certain extent, you don't have to worry about resources too much.
It's just that sometimes you do, and hopefully your solution to them isn't "Download more RAM", or the like...

There are some threads in the Garage that I'm ignoring that I'm pretty sure would have the same effect.
-
@HardwareGeek yeah, but Tetris is healthier.
-
@Gąska Indubitably, but I think I'll read some Pratchett instead. Healthy and fun, but probably not exciting enough to keep me awake too long.

No, because I was 14 when they ended, but my mum used to pay for shopping by cheque because it meant an extra few days before the money left her account

Get a snow blower.
These ones are pretty neat. If there is a small car in the way, it'll chew through it with relative ease as well.
Also, loud as hell video.

Was she day-trading, or did she do it out of principle?

She was probably giving herself a no-interest payday loan.

The real question is, were they in financial distress before he started working for them???

What are the kids in my neighborhood doing now that they take away such big slices of my line?If you want the real answer, the kids are inside your computer.
You're downloading files to your disk drive, and as the buffer for the download process fills up and needs to flush to disk, it's causing the TCP window to slam shut on the download, and then slowly scale back up as the buffer flushes and there's room for more bits. As to why the downloader is behaving that badly with your SSD, I can't answer, have you tried using something newer than FF 22?
-
@topspin said in The Official Status Thread:

I was receiving checks from part time work until just a few months ago.
What I don't like about direct deposit, at least as it's been explained on a few occasions, is that it's apparently an irrevocable two-way access. The latest was when I was informed I had to close the account (thus invalidating the numbers) to stop Amazon from stealing refunds if fraudulently authorized. As if it's not bad enough to let somebody you know have that, the security situation at these places introduces serious risk that multiple somebodies you don't know will have it in short order.

: Can I have the report generated from "all transactions" between 1-1-2014 and 12-31-2014 in CSV, TAB, and PDF formats? Due to the 7 year limit, the website wouldn't generate the entire year for me.
: Sure, we can have that in 24 hours.
...three days later...
: Here's a completely different format XLSX file!I'm sure they had some intern banging on the exact same web interface you were using for an hour before saying "fuck it" and sending you that.
Status: Called PayPal because the chat bot they have on the site is stupid and recognizes three words at best. Woman on the phone could not understand that XLSX is not CSV. Told her I was a programmer and I know the difference between Office XML and Comma Separated Values. "But CSVs open in Excel so they're the same!" Calling back to see if a different agent is less stupid ().

Watched it now (the match, not the interview), pretty cool. Interesting to see that they hold the controllers weirdly. And didn't expect a 3-2 comeback after the brother was 0-2 ahead.

Well, keep in mind that the only "Security" on your account is the fact that your Account Number combined with your Routing Number is un-guessable (well, the Routing Number is public knowledge, and the Account Number is... on every check you ever wrote, but STILL)
Of course this is OK(tm) because Only Authorized People can take money out of your account like that. And Trust Us, Only Authorized People can ever make an electronic transfer so it's Totally Safe.
Utter insanity.
(Oh, yes, and there's a fee for saying "Computer Says No", if someone attempts to take out money and it's blocked. Usually on both the bank's side, and the withdrawer's side.)

This is true.
On the other hand, the fact that the entire banking system relies on a gentleman's agreement to not steal money from each other is.... a deeply disturbing thought.

Slightly garagey and/or response
Just wait till you learn about fiat money systems!

He used to be linked from Raymond Chen's blog. I read a few posts a long time ago, but didn't find it too interesting besides driving home the point that yes, Unicode is indeed crazy complicated and I'm going to leave my hands off it.
