Status: Fixing a light switch.
Um, why are all three cables black? Shouldn’t there be a neutral (blue) one? And two of them are hot instead of just one. What?
It’s a two-way switched lamp (i.e. there are two switches across the room), so as far as I understand it they should both be SPDT switches and always switch between on and off. Which, I assume, explains why there’s not just one phase (black) and one neutral cable. But:- in that case, shouldn’t still only one of the phase cables ever be hot?
- it doesn’t actually work that way. Both switches need to be on for the light to work instead of actually switching (i.e. it acts like an AND instead of an XOR).
I don’t get it.
-
@topspin Everything connected to the switch is (maybe) hot:
The input to the first switch is hot. One of the outputs from it is hot. The output from the second switch may or may not actually be hot, but it is still the hot lead to the lamp.
The neutral should never go to the switch. It is always, whether a normal or a two-way switch, wired directly back to the junction box.

Assuming it actually is what, in the most simple case it's wired the other way round.
Yes, both are hot, but in a XOR only one is carrying current at any given time.
Edit:
-
@HardwareGeek That's actually one of the examples I'm using for my pupils when going over basic circuitry.

Okay, yes, that makes sense. Thanks. If I understand correctly this also means that the one cable that wasn’t hot would’ve switched to hot when I turned the switch, right?
Still don’t understand why the lamp doesn’t turn on when switching either switch, like it should. (The AND vs. XOR configuration I mentioned.)
EDIT: I think my mental mistake was thinking of the second switch in that diagram, where only one line is hot when the lamp is off. For some reason it didn’t occur to me that I don’t know if I’m dealing with the first or second one.

Status: Nap time. I had to get up at 05:00 this morning. I went to bed extra early last night, but much of this morning was still spent yawning and struggling to keep my eyes open. It's not easy to operate a video camera with your eyes closed.

@Applied-Mediocrity The thing in the link works the way I think it should work, not the way it seemed to work.
Whatever, maybe I just pushed the wrong buttons.

@topspin said in The Official Status Thread:

If one of the wires between the switches wasn't actually connected, it would work as an AND. There are probably one or more other ways of misconnecting the wires that would also do it. But it all boils down to being wired incorrectly.

Yes. I think the two options are it’s wired incorrectly or I’m too stupid to push the button. Both are possible, but I’m tempted to believe the first one.

@Carnage I need to move there. Here in backwoods Pennsyltucky, they're so picky they won't even interview if you're a version behind on browsers or your ode to ASP.NET MVC is a few stanzas short.
Status: Apparently credit card phone systems all forgot how to calculate available balances. Citi thinks a balance of $4071 against a $4100 limit is over the limit. Sears thinks you make a $600 payment against a card that isn't over limit and wind up over limit. No wonder these idiots had to be bailed out 10 years ago.
Screaming at a voice system with the hearing of a retired bell maker that won't let you use the number pad is fun too.

And you have now explained something that was previously "magic" to me. Thank you.
(Yes I know it's simple, I've never really actually looked into it though)

Status: my computer had a bit of a hiccup.
Yesterday I turned it on, the fans started making a LOUD noise. Like almost as loud as a vacuum cleaner. But it worked fine apart from that. Not wanting to take it apart, I tried a bit of the old percussive maintenance to see if I could at least get it to work for the day.
I hit it just once with moderate force (certainly not enough to break anything in any other computer), the fan immediately started spinning properly, everything else stopped working. There was not even any power to the USB ports. Great.
So I took it apart today. While the power was on I tried to push all the motherboard connectors in. Well, I must have bent it a bit too much and it touched the case, because there was a visible spark in the back side, followed by a burning smell
(Why do I always mess with things with the power still on? This is not the first time something like this happens)...and then surprisingly, after I removed and re-placed the RAM stick, it started working again

You got one response. The question is resolved and your quota is used up, as far as they are concerned. Don't expect them to read your next letter.

Status: Kept hearing someone rev his engine right outside my apartment windows. I assumed it would be some 20-year-old primer-colored Civic with a football-field sized spoiler, an aftermarket muffler, and a set of rims that cost more than every Honda ever produced combined.
Nope. It was this. I occasionally see some Lamborghinis, Maseratis, and Ferraris around here, but this is one I figured I'd go an entire lifetime without seeing.

@mott555 Based on my intensive high-performance-computer-aided research that looks like an MP4-12C, which is comparable in price and (maybe) rarity to a Lamborghini or Ferrari

Nah, but everyone else can, as I submit these to the local newspaper.

one of our neighbors has one of those.
none of the tire rims match (same size tho, just off different makes/models), the muffler's "missing" and is only found once a year when it's time for state inspection, The spoiler is quite large but well made. Car looks like it's been on the rally track for 30 years solid. Vanity plate

Go visit a nearby hotel. The WiFi connection itself may be 54Mbps or better, but the actual data throughput — well, you may get 54kbps, if you're lucky. Welcome to my world.

Well, yeah, but that's expected. I didn't expect it in my own home with my nominally ten-times-faster equipment (except for this aging "desktop replacement" laptop).
Also, fuck Windows pre-8 task manager,

N-methyl-1-phenylpropan-2-amine
if you wanted?
-
@Vixen Um, no thanks. 1,3,7-Trimethylxanthine is as wild and crazy as I get.
At least without a prescription. I did at one time have a valid prescription for Methyl phenyl(piperidin-2-yl)acetate, but it was only somewhat effective, so my doctor tried a different medication, which wasn't effective at all (and none of the previous alternatives had been, either). Insurance wouldn't pay for any of them, so I kinda gave up.
