Avatars for posts and in-reply-to links always use the current avatar (plus/minus browser caching and discoupdating), but avatars in quotes are baked into the post and don't get updated unless the topic is rebaked for some reason. I think this is by design, although I'm not at all sure I understand the "logic" behind it. It doesn't bother me, though; it just shows that the user changed its avatar at some point since its post was quoted.
Like I said, a bug.
Look about 20-30 posts in, for the first abuse of smiley thread. You'll notice that there's a few emoticons in there that are no longer part of the pack we use. So using the "let's bake it into the post" logic, they should show up as broken links, right?
Or they turn up as unbaked, in colon name colon format. :notexists:
So in the same thread, you have baked vs. unbaked disconsistency less than a page what's a page apart. Brillant.

It's at least better than when a user had all of their posts rebaked every time they changed avatar.

I guess /{user}/avatar/current.jpg would be too hard for Discourse to figure out, would it?

The problem isn't that it's too hard, it's that it's too simple.
-
QFT, the team can't do simple. Everything they do has to have some kind of Rube Goldberg mechanism.

If Rube Goldberg ever built a bikeshed...

Seriously though, as far as WTFs go, Discourse is the gift that keeps on giving. Jeff and Co have given us so much material over this past year. It's been funny and also morbidly fascinating.
I'll be kind of sorry to see it go, but it'll be nice to see the back of server cooties.

One of the Discourse features that I also love is how the text gets blurry when hovering over it...

Also, Pintos from the 1980s explode. What's your point, Jeff?

I've noticed this 'bug' ever since using Discourse
Whoa whoa whoa there, Martin. We don't use that word around here. Imma going to let you slide since you used airquotes, because as we all know, ABCD--- Attwood doesn't C "B"s on Discourse. (Also doesn't know how acronyms work).
But if you use that word again, even in jest, we'll have to image meme you and send you to the naught step. (Which isn't one of the missing stairs).

STOP REPORTING SO MANY BUGS! THIS ISN'T DISCOURSE ITS YOU COMPLAINING TOO MUCH

Safari uses WebKit as well. Maybe some "fix" Apple did for retina displays got pulled upstream? It's not completely inconceiveable there's a connection in this case.

But hey, don't worry guys, the letter avatar service is highly
performantsecureawesome.

I've been running Firefox with Network open - **on two Discourse forums** - waiting for it to happen again.

If I had more time, I'd photoshop a thousand security cameras pointing at a bikeshed the size of a house containing a single Complicator's Bike that no one is riding.

Is that for putting out the computer when it catches on fire, or for beating Jeff over the head afterwards? I suppose it works for both...
I'm pretty sure that having Dicksores open all the time is the reason FireFux keeps going back to its tent to sulk every hour or so lately.

At what point does it stop being debugging and become exorcism?
-
So we need to get an old Firefox, and a young Firefox, as well as a bell, a candle, and a copy of Code Complete...

Something old, something new, something borrowed and... what colour is the dust jacket on that book again?

Blue. But the correct question is what SHADE of blue?

TARDIS blue? I like TARDISes.

There was quite the chunk of downtime this morning. We should probably get somebody to warn us about or even better yet prevent that sort of thing...

There was quite the chunk of downtime this morning.
What just happened that it took out the server for over an hour?
-
Discourse needs to maintain those nine fives of uptime somehow!
-
Not only that but the servercooties site was throwing up its own 500s while WTDWTF was down.
