A universe identical to this one, but where vampire bats never existed and stories about vampires consist of creepy men turning into mosquitoes and being swatted.
Wasn't there a movie about this?
Oh wait, he wasn't a Mosquito, he was a fly...

Oh, this crackpot theory :)
I first stumbled across it when I was involved in a discussion about the reclassification of Pluto. Someone tried to claim that the Sumerians had already discovered Pluto, Neptune and Uranus. When I asked how they had done that (considering that, for example, that Neptune was discovered through mathematically modelling the course of Uranus, thus stumbling over course anomalies which could only be explained by an as of dato undisovered planet), they pointed to the tablet depicted in the article.

I don't know why this is not . Good Ideas thread, maybe. We should build some here.

@boomzilla what, you are against natural selection ?
-
@boomzilla I presume they didn't do it 'as installed' (whereupon they could be cut to shreds and then dropped hundreds or thousands of feet to their deaths) but in lab conditions which only carries the of being cut to shreds but non-lethally. Probably.

I don't follow. Are you saying that's a bad idea? Seems to me that if it didn't shatter, it's pretty durable.
My mother told a story once about a truck driver for an oil company drilling rig. There was a bridge behind our house, in sight from the windows. She said he zoomed by the house (they all drive like maniacs) then slammed on the brakes and stopped just short of the bridge.
He got out of the truck and walked to the middle of the (100+ foot long) bridge. Then he jumped up and down on the bridge 3 or 4 times, then went back, climbed in the truck and drove across.
We always thought that was a phenomenally bad idea. But, hey, if it was good for a bridge, why not for glass bridge panes?
Also: note that they did not say the cracked pane was hanging over the cliff when the volunteers jumped on it.

WTF? How does the force capable of being provided by a single man justify the ability of a bridge to hold a TRUCK?!?!?
Am I missing something?
-
@Tsaukpaetra he jumped up and down and decided it was probably close enough.
The oil industry is not... exactly... known for its value judgement on human life.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzcB26OETyYEDIT: I forgot to mention that you might note that a specific company had a hand in every one of those cases - a company, oddly enough, that is usually considered to have one of the best track safety track records in the business, with fewer minor accidents than almost anyone... I guess that BP's view of accidents is "go big or go home"...

@CoyneTheDup if it was the video that I saw, I'm pretty sure it was in place.
They even let them take sledgehammers to it.
And then they drove a car onto it.

This bridge is scheduled to be demolished anyway, but around 70 similar bridges of similar age are still in use around the country.

Sliding glass door.
I don't think so. It looks to me like a hinged, frameless glass door on the right, open in the picture, and a narrow section of frameless glass wall on the left. Since it has no frame along the vertical edge, it is very easy to not see the edge of the glass and think the glass is empty space. When the door is closed, the door handle is floating in the middle of the empty space, so you have a cue that it is not really empty, but with the door open, it simply looks like the door opening is about half a meter wider than it really is.

What the actual fuck. This thread is so fucked.
I'm in paginated mode, 5 posts per page. It says the last page of the thread is 2327. When I go to the last page, it fucking gets stuck, and any page that I click just brings me back to the same place:

Clicking the "" button on a post takes me back to it successfully, and if that post is on a previous page then it's unstuck, until I visit page 2327 again and it gets stuck again.
tl;dr: ALL OF THE PAGE BUTTONS GO TO THIS POST.
edit: of course now they all go to the post right after that, since now it's the 3rd from the last. It still thinks there are 2 fewer posts than there actually are in this thread.

@lolwhat on the buttumption that if there were 5 staying over, that a sixth one that resides there instigated it (as otherwise, one of the five wouldn't be 'staying over', or really scary things happen there)

Yes. The number of posts that it thinks the topic contains is off by 2 from the actual post count.
-
@anotherusername said in 🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:

It "works" (for certain values of "work") in infiniscroll mode. The last post is still 2 before the end. But you can actually read those 2.
-
@dcon you can read them in paginated mode, too, as long as they don't fall off the end of the last page that NodeBB thinks exists and onto a page NodeBB thinks doesn't exist.

This thread has had actively "moderating" in it in the past. Who knows what sort of wreckage is lurking behind the scenes?

The problem's new though. I've been using pagination for ages, and reading this thread for ages, and I would've noticed if the bookmark for this thread was always the 3rd from last post.
