Email from Sony:
Update on PlayStation®Mobile (PSM)
On March 11, 2015, SCE notified users that they must activate their PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita)/PlayStation®TV (PS TV) systems in order to continue playing their PlayStation®Mobile (PSM) content after the termination of the service. However, it has become apparent that even if users activate their devices by following the notified procedure, their devices may become deactivated in certain cases.
In response to the above, we have set a new device activation method and implementation period. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause, but we ask users to perform device activation by following the instructions below.
Device activation procedure*1:
• Users must update their PS Vita/PS TV systems2 to the latest system software (version 3.55 and beyond), be connected online, and launch their purchased PSM content between October 13, 2015 and February 29, 2016. Activation will be completed just by launching the content once3.
*1 Even after users complete the above procedure, if they swap their PS Vita memory cards or backup/restore their PS Vita/PS TV data, they must connect to the network the first time they are accessing PSM content.
*2 Up to three compatible devices (PS Vita, PlayStation®Certified devices) can be activated.
*3 If users deactivate their devices after February 29, 2016, they will no longer be able to play their purchased PSM content on the deactivated devices.Sincerely,
The PlayStation TeamOk, first of all, the email starts out with a lie. (I wasn't notified of jack shit by Sony on March 11. I checked.)
Second of all, the one important thing this email doesn't explain: WHAT THE FUCK IS "PSM CONTENT"? And do I actually own any? Because fuck if I know. Does that include normal Vita games, like the Vita version of Uncharted? Does it include indie Vita games, like my copy of Mutant Blobs Attack? Does it include those PSP-ported games like the copy of Daxter I got super-cheap? I have no idea.
So basically to ensure I retain access to this content, I HAVE TO LAUNCH EVERY VITA GAME I OWN!? And potentially download some of it, since I don't have it all installed right now. Is that seriously the process, Sony?
Here's what the same email would look like from Microsoft:
Get it? It's nothing. Because even if they had to implement some "activation" thing, they'd just silently and automatically DO IT IN THEIR DATACENTER and not harass their customers about it.
Well congratulations Sony, you got me to turn on my Vita for the first time since, uh, January it looks like. Also your screen seems to be holding up well, considering it's been basically buried in a pile of trash for a full year.
EDIT: BTW a little research shows that they stopped allowing re-downloads of "PSM" games (whatever the fuck those are) like 2 months ago. Really fair, considering they didn't notify me that those games would be disappearing UNTIL JUST FUCKING NOW YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES! So even if I owned some "PSM" games (whatever the fuck those are) they are now gone forever. I love it.
-
How is it possible this incompetent company of shitheads is out-performing Microsoft at fucking anything? It's mind-boggling. THEY JUST FUCKING STOLE FROM ME! I mean God knows we were making fun of Valve this morning, but they've never fucking stolen my property from me.
Gamers are fucking stupid as shit. God knows I was when I bought this boat anchor of a gaming system.

Sony doing something showing complete disrespect for their customers? Never!
-
Dude, you don't have to dig up stuff from like 57 years ago in your timepod, Sony's shit RIGHT NOW.
-
This is probably as 'PSM' (some weird runtime library that would've 'run on PlayStation-certified Android phones as well') activations were abused to install, well, 'homebrew'. Sony loves breaking features that get exploited by people (see: PS3 OtherOS).

Sony loves breaking features that get exploited by people
That's because Sony is a media company that happens to also sell technology. Whenever the media people see the technology people doing something that might cause them to make less money, they kill it with fire, even if it pisses off the technology customers.
I suspect the mishandling of retiring PSM content on the Vita has its roots in the media division. Somebody probably feels that for every thousand customers who lose their content, one might re-buy it on another platform. The media division would see that as a net profit since all the bad will and losses are someone else's problem.
This is why I don't buy from Sony anymore.

PlayStation Mobile, essentially Mono for PSP, along with Sony Entertainment Network connectivity (trophies) on other devices. Wikipedia has a list of affected games. The activation procedure seems ... irritating, especially since you also have to do it every time you swap memory sticks or do any kind of backup or restore.

Sony's shit RIGHT NOW.
And I was implying that wasn't exactly a novel state for them to be in.

Wow, even Nintendo lets you re-download your games.

No they don't. Not if you're doing it because your console broke.

Stupid post from flabdablet.

[a]s of August 31, 2008, we will no longer be able to support the retrieval of license keys for the songs you purchased from MSN Music or the authorization of additional computers.
The songs you downloaded illegally and backed up on Dropbox, on the other hand, will continue to function perfectly on all your additional computers. Remember, kids, crime doesn't pay.

Remember, kids, crime doesn't pay.
Indeed. It also doesn't pay again and again for the same music :-)

this is true. I estimate that about 60% of my current music collection is from the high seas,
HOWEVER
every single song in my library was AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER legitimately purchased through a legal retailer, I merely took to the high seas to regain what i had paid outright for when the various services that i had paid for the tracks originally in went the way of the dodo.
or in the case of my vinyl collection because i was too damn lazy to digitize it myself for the more casual listening away from my turntable, such as when i'm on the road.
-
I couldn't say the same thing about my past music consumption. Though a substantial part I came by legally, a lot was copied from friends, and some I downloaded. I never paid for a single DRM encumbered file, and I'm happy about that shit being on the way out.
Nowadays I listen to CC licensed tracks almost exclusively, copyleft offers cover my musical tastes quite well. Books are still pretty difficult to buy in digital form, but it's getting better.

Not in that situation. But if you buy a game and delete another one off your SD card to make room for it, you can re-download it, even on another SD card.

You need one of these:

the road being a metaphor for traveling, not all roads are paved afterall. ;-)
and even if it was a car i wouldn't play the record while driving. that could cut new grooves with the road vibrations and destroy the record.

Doesn't that affect the warmness of the sound?
yes, but that's easily corected by setting your speakers on fire.

No, she's asking for advice on how to prevent any potential ugly hat that person might want to wear from being ugly.

I was talking about @aliceif (I think?). One doesn't attribute to the messenger the contents of the forwarded message...

Drive one of these:
If it can carry a basket of eggs across an unpaved field without them breaking, your records might be safe too.

(Dammit Discourse, why can’t I have two images in a post?!)
You need one of these:
Someone to sing the songs to you? But in most cases I prefer originals over covers.
