why is a process using 3.6MB/s of disk read/write using 100% of disk?
unless it's being utterly braindead and issuing a bazillionty seven read requests per file, instead of just reading the files from beginning to end?
It's a malware scan. At that moment it probably was stuck in a folder with a trillion tiny files.

DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My bosses keep telling me to add lines of text with exclamation points to our website. Several of these lines have had 2-4 exclamation points. No one's mentioned that they were cut down to one exclamation mark on the website itself, at least.

You'd think so, but I got an "Access Denied" popup when I tried to kill the task or lower its priority. And my only user account is an administrator.

Try Process Explorer instead. You can also suspend the task indefinitely.
Otherwise try a real OS.
-
@Lorne-Kates
Even inFF22Windows 7 and earlier, there were ways for processes to declare themselves mission critical (basically kernel-level) and prevent Task Manager from altering them. I would expect that Process Explorer would be constrained by the same restriction/property, but I don't have experience one way or the other, so YMMV.

It's this pre emptive multi tasking buggering things up. If you had a proper cooperative system you could just blue screen it to death

Status: Replacing my Surface Book under warranty. It woke up in my bag for some reason, which of course resulted in some serious heat buildup. That's when I noticed some yellow screen discoloration at the borders which then vanished again after cooling down.
There is no noticable damage but some of the forum entries I found spoke of scary stuff like a cracking screen due to heat buildup after getting just those yellow splotches.
Seemingly, the MS tech support agrees and I'll get a new one in 2 days.

STATUS: Well that's a new and unique hardware bug.
Fact 1: 2010 honda oddesseys detect open doors va a button that gets pressed in when the door is shut.
Fact 2: The car alarm goes off if state changes from "Closed" to "Opened" while the vehicle is locked.
Fact 3: In normal operation, seatbelts may get jammed in the door. In extreme cases, this may lead to minor damage, such as dents on the inside of the doorframe.
So guess what happens when one of those dents just happens to be strategically placed right where the pushbutton thing rests.
If you guessed "Car alarm triggers randomly", you win!
The Ford Escape has the same "feature", plus it also suffers from a buggy switch. Like not even physical damage, just plain shitty design that wears out prematurely. And it's part of the fucking door latch mechanism, so you have to replace the whole thing.
@sloosecannon said in The Official Status Thread:
@sloosecannon this bug was fixed with a strategic placement of tape (mounting, not duct, unfortunately, since thickness matters here) right over the dent.
In my case, it was fixed by strategically never using the power locks to lock the vehicle, because that's what arms the alarm. Like, seriously.
If I do have to use the power locks to lock it (the rear door/window don't have manual locks), I have to re-unlock the front driver-side door using the key, then re-lock it manually, then shut it. This confuses it into disarming the alarm and not re-arming it again.
'course, I have to keep the interior lights turned off, and that annoying DING still goes off quite often while driving since it thinks the door just popped open...

It's a Task that counts up how much time your CPU has been idle. It takes up a lot of CPU when it is.
But hey, at least it doesn't thrash your disk.

False
My favorite part is when you go to close a task in Task Manager and it just sits there without doing anything.

// At this point, I'd like to take a moment to speak to you about the Adobe PSD // format. PSD is not a good format. PSD is not even a bad format. Calling it // such would be an insult to other bad formats, such as PCX or JPEG. No, PSD // is an abysmal format. Having worked on this code for several weeks now, my // hate for PSD has grown to a raging fire that burns with the fierce passion // of a million suns. // // If there are two different ways of doing something, PSD will do both, in // different places. It will then make up three more ways no sane human would // think of, and do those too. PSD makes inconsistency an art form. Why, for // instance, did it suddenly decide that *these* particular chunks should be // aligned to four bytes, and that this alignement should *not* be included in // the size? Other chunks in other places are either unaligned, or aligned with // the alignment included in the size. Here, though, it is not included. Either // one of these three behaviours would be fine. A sane format would pick one. // PSD, of course, uses all three, and more. // // Trying to get data out of a PSD file is like trying to find something in the // attic of your eccentric old uncle who died in a freak freshwater shark // attack on his 58th birthday. That last detail may not be important for the // purposes of the simile, but at this point I am spending a lot of time // imagining amusing fates for the people responsible for this Rube Goldberg of // a file format. // // Earlier, I tried to get a hold of the latest specs for the PSD file format. // To do this, I had to apply to them for permission to apply to them to have // them consider sending me this sacred tome. This would have involved faxing // them a copy of some document or other, probably signed in blood. I can only // imagine that they make this process so difficult because they are intensely // ashamed of having created this abomination. I was naturally not gullible // enough to go through with this procedure, but if I had done so, I would have // printed out every single page of the spec, and set them all on fire. Were it // within my power, I would gather every single copy of those specs, and launch // them on a spaceship directly into the sun. // // PSD is not my favourite file format.

Status: So, testing my "Split folder on exceeding max size" functionality. It seems to work except I used a value that essentially means the folder gets split on each account. Which happens to exceed the limit anyways.
I don't know whether to count that as success or fail, because it's technically working properly, but logistically failing to meet the expectations of the parameter's name.
I guess I should be thankful it's not just spewing out folders trying to get an empty one (like I thought it would in this situation).
