HTC's old Windows Mobile phones, mid-2000s

@hungrier I used to have one of those. What a pain.
-
Tell me this is a joke.
I might have to switch phone platforms.

@accalia They've been saying they were planning this for some time... It's nice, because now you can't listen to music while your phone charges!
-
@error said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

Probably not. Apple's been saying for a while that they were getting rid of the audio plug. (Replacing with Lightning, I think?) Not that I give a shit - I haven't drunk that koolaid. (My koolaid is Windows flavored)

well fuck. that's about the most user hostile thing they could do apart from make the phone fatally electrocute people at random. and their fantards will STILL eat that shit up and praise them for their innovation.
COLONIZE MARS FASTER! I DON'T WANT TO LIVE ON THIS PLANET ANY MORE AND THERE AREN'T ANY ALTERNATIVES!
-
Apparently it lets the phone get thinner. I don't like thin phones, I always add a case. Also, the ipod touch is thinner than any iPhone and has a 3.5mm jack so the argument is bollocks
-
@Magus
It's too bad no one has invented a wireless technology to pair headphones and smart phones and transfer audio. It would only need to work over short ranges, so even unlicensed consumer frequencies would work almost all the time since interference wouldn't be a big deal. Maybe someone can make such a device in the 2.4GHz band...
-
@accalia They want people to buy their new (and overpriced) wireless earbuds and completely disregard any other headphones that use the standard 3.5mm jack.
@izzion Apple claims that Bluetooth isn't good enough for that, that it "has limitations" (the limitation being that they can't lock it down so only their hardware works) so they have to have a custom chip for that.

Fuck them. i'll be over here on team android with my $1.00 earbuds that have the same build quality and audio fidelity as their over priced shit.
and because they were $1.00 i bought twenty pair so when i lose or break them i don't give a flying fuck!
also, we have wireless earbuds already. they're called fucking bluetooth headsets (with beats by dr dre if you want to go into the overpriced shit category)

Speaking of (via Ars Technica):
The new wireless buds are made possible with the Apple W1 chip, Schiller said. According to the demo video, the new accessory should provide "intelligent, high-efficiency playback over a consistent, reliable connection" as such. Among its features, the buds can reportedly last five hours on a single charge (though a charging case can provide 24 hours of battery live according to the company). The AirPods only play when in-ear thanks to IR detecting the accessory, and users can access Siri through a simple double tap. When used for conversations, voice accelerometers detect source of your voice and beam-forming mice reduce external noise, according to Apple. The new AirPods will cost $159 and arrive in late October.
Funny, wired headphones last as many hours as the phone and cost a lot less than $159.

Exactly! While we're at it, lets rip out all phone lines (after all, we have fiber optics now), all ethernet (Who uses that, now that we have WiFi?), and smash every computer not made in the past year (None of them can be doing anything important).

@error I have the SE215's myself, only problem is the plastic around the plug is too fat and doesn't fit through the hole in my phone case so I have to de-case my phone just to plug headphones in. One of these days I will probably get the drill out and make the hole a bit bigger.
Filed Under: I'm lazy, someone else can apply all the in the appropriate locations

My only complaint is the cord gets frayed very easily. I've had to replace the cord 5 times now. Luckily, the earphones themselves are very durable, and the cord is easily replacable.
-
@error I'm starting to have that problem. I only have issues while running, my foot impacts can make the sound fade in and out unless I squeeze the plug just right. I'm actually impressed, seeing how these have thousands of miles of motorcycle travel on them, and like you said the cord is easily replaceable so it's not that big a deal.

See and here's the thing — while Apple and Intel see the future as wireless everything, real life demonstrates that Ethernet, DisplayPort, and headphone cables are vastly superior to Wifi, Airplay/Chromecast/WiDi, and bluetooth in every situation where the cable's limit on portability does not cause issues.
And guess when you're going to not care about that limitation?
Oh right, when you're already tied to one location to charge your phone, using up that sole connector they give you! Yay! When you're out on the go, the lightning connector won't be used for anything but audio! Brillant!
-
@Magus You could do that if apple did the sensible thing and placed TWO lightning connectors on their iShits.
-
@anonymous234 My HTC Windows Mobile phone way back when had the connector similar to what's shown in the OP, but it was much bulkier and split the odd almost-Mini-USB connector out into a standard Mini-USB and a standard 3.5mm stereo jack, so you could charge and listen at the same time.

Didn't that one happen already?
-
@pydsigner Samsung's been doing their own research on that field.
-
I have an iPhone 6 and it has a headphone jack that works nicely with "aux" in my car.
-
@anonymous234 said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

They're more likely to put a headphone socket on the charger.
-
I had this thing:
Everything through the non-standard 8mm jack (regular headphones still worked). But they had excuses of:
- It's an MP3 player. Situations where you want to charge it at the same time as you listen to it are damned rare.
- Look how freaking tiny it is! USB plug would make it much bigger, which would defeat the purpose of making an extremely small MP3 player that's still usable.
I don't think iPhone really can use either of these... So.. ?
-
@Onyx I've seen the build quality of anything iRiver and it is usally crap.
-
@lucas1 I was perfectly happy with it.
Then I lost it
-
@Onyx said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

Now you know why an extremely small <anything> isn't that great.
-
@Onyx The excuse of "we wanted it to be thin" doesn't hold water either, because there's such a thing as a 2.5mm jack in use on a lot of feature phones today.
-
@Magus said in Apple's newest iPhone, 2016:

Funny. Remember when told @PJH basically that?
-
@anonymous234 That would actually be super cool and might make USB OTG actually viable one day.
-
What's the consensus on Windows Phone these days? iPhones have clearly jumped the shark.
-
@error LOL is the official status.

Pretty much. I think Microsoft just laid off most of the Nokia team they bought to work with Windows Phone. As much as I loved WP, even I finally migrated to Android a couple months ago because Microsoft clearly isn't interested in phones anymore.

Microsoft probably had something good in its hands, but they seem to have given up on it.

It's not like Apple was keeping us in mind, anyways. What they really want to do is find out how many people will eat that shit up (i.e. obnoxious hipsters) to see if they can get away with other future anti-consumer moves.
What's the next move, you ask? Why of course, thin client phones! Fuck data limits, we'll just stick everything on the "iCloud"!
-
I heard a rumor that they were going to add wireless charging technology to the latest model. Any truth to that one?

Meanwhile, LG unveiled a phone with
- micro SD slot
- removable back cover
- replacable battery
- USB-C
- 3.5mm headphone connector
- an up-to-date CPU
- Android 7.0
which will forever be overlooked.

Oh come on, Windows 10 isn't that bad. Almost, but not exactly.

I'd consider it if it wasn't an inch too big.

@mott555 In all honesty Nokias have been the best "dumb" and "feature" phones I've had.
