No Man's Sky

There's been a lot of hype surrounding this game, has anyone been playing it?
I'm in Canadiana, so it won't be out here until Friday. Based on the stuff that I've read online, the survival aspect of it seems like a bit of a time sink and a way to artificially increase the game length. Bummer.
-
Seems fun in the first hour we've been playing; @cloak15 probably has more comprehensive thoughts.
Also, the robot voice lady sounds hauntingly familiar. There's no IMDB credit for that voice in particular; is it just me or is it
the turrets from Portal?
-
-
Well, this is just from 2 hours, so YMMV, but it's decently fun. The 'survival' aspect doesn't seem much of a time sink as:
A) The things that you need for survival are the same stuff you need for exploration
B ) Nothing has really been pushing me outside of 'get stuff for your ship to do all the ship things. All I CAN say is that I started the game and then suddenly it was 2.5 hours later. Hopefully it won't disappoint as I get farther.

the turrets from Portal?Every female character in Portal and Portal 2 is voice acted by Ellen McLain. Her husband is also in a lot of Valve games.

Turrets are female? ;)

Turrets are female? ;)If GLaDOS is female, the turrets can be too!
-
-
Yeah, I guess I just always interpreted their voices as childish, in that way where children have high voices that don't differ much by sex, so I never really assigned them a gender. Whereas GlaDOS is clearly a *woman's* voice.
-
Looks like a horror game over here.
-
@bb36e Yes bought it, was upto 3am last night playing it. It is ace. It kinda like survival FPS + Elite.
It is the first game in a while where I have thought "well I haven't played anything like this before". There is an option for like a tutorial or something at the start, I just said "nah I will learn as I go along". You have to learn Alien languages via "knowledge stones" and you can find new tech by scanning the planets surface and finding abandoned tech.
The start planet was pretty cool, with these raptor like dinosaur and lizard like aliens and you get a small amount of cash for discovering each new life form.
-
@lucas1 gotcha. I just don't know if it's going to be worth the $75 it costs here... And on top of that who knows what the PC version is going to be like...
-
@bb36e I got the PS4 version. TBH it is a PC game that has been ported to console first i.e. a lot of the menus make you use the stick to mouse through etc.
I think it is ace because of the art style, the game play is fun, there are objectives (like a quest) but you don't have to do them and can go exploring instead. Apparently there is a black monolith in the game (reading on forums) which might be a cool 2001 reference.
-
Typical: you don’t even know something exists, and then you hear about it from two directions within half an hour of each other.
I saw a report on a TV show about this game this morning, and it mainly left me wondering if there’s more to it than exploring and mining stuff. One person in that report even said something like that it’ll appeal to players who like to grind.

From what I gathered there are FPS and space combat segments too, but they don't seem to be the focus, just set pieces.
Doesn't really look like something I'd not get bored with fast so I didn't really spend ages looking into it, honestly.
-

Do you have missions to complete? We enabled it, thinking it was a tutorial, but didn't get a proper tutorial, but we now have missions like "find fuel" to complete, so I think that's what it did.
@lucas1 said in No Man's Sky:

oh, I kept thinking "Wow, it's like Minecraft" :D (not a criticism: I love Minecraft)
-
I would describe it as a indie triple a game. I never played Minecraft. The developers have said they are going to ship periodic updates to the game to add to the world.
-
@Yamikuronue said in No Man's Sky:

That's probably what makes me go "meh" about it. For a Minecraft-like space experience have Space Engineers, and that allows me to actually build stuff and play with designs. Just discovering stuff and upgrading my prebuilt ship kinda lost its appeal to me on its own, and is appears a bit slim on any other kind of content aside from that.
-
There is space combat segments but my ship is so rubbish I don't think I could survive a space battle yet.

On TV they showed the player shooting stuff, but I couldn’t really tell (due to reading a newspaper at the same time) if it was only at terrain or also at NPCs and/or other players. It did look like mining consisted of shooting something with a laser beam, though.
-

Confirmed.
-
@Gurth Not other players. It appears that they either lied about multiplayer support, or withdrew it before release without telling anyone.
-
@mott555 They said months ago that you were never likely to meet another player, so no big surprise really. A lot of tech companies have been running with this line but tbh, what they have shown on the trailers is exactly what I have been doing in game.
I would be nice if in game improvements for the first few months were low cost of free as they have already mentioned they will be patching stuff in as they go.
-
@mott555 based on what i saw of the game, I don't think I'd be disappointed by the lack of multiplayer. but the fact is that they said in interviews that you could totally see other people (if you get lucky) and them being tight-lipped is weird.
what's infuriating is all the comment sections online of people saying, 'well the game is about exploration, they said it wasn't going to be about the multiplayer, you should make your own fun, etc' -- well sure, but the dude still said multiplayer.
-
@r10pez10 Pretty good advert tbh.
Not as weird as the PS2 "head girl ad" of old though
Playstation Head Girl Ad – 00:41
— Fernando SilesOr the PS3 baby ad, which is just creepy
PS3 Commercial BABY – 00:31
— evan1994

@lucas1 said in No Man's Sky:

to quote murray:
COLBERT: can you run into other people, other players in the game?
MURRAY: yes, but the chances of that are incredibly rare...I'm not upset about this or anything, but there's no disputing the fact that he said something which turned out to not be true. now whether or not he lied, I dunno.
is it important that there's no multiplayer? I guess if you preordered it with your mates with the intention of messing around together then maybe, but preordering is dumb.
-
@lucas1 oh god, the baby.
-
@bb36e Yeh that was (probably) the conversation I was referring to.
but preordering is dumb.
Yup, basically giving them money for a potentially shitty product. I never buy on the day of release now. Batman Arkham Knight and other shite PC ports basically confirmed my views on it.
I bought a few days after release to see general reaction and I watched some gameplay vids to see if I thought I would like playing it. I was going to hold out to Friday for the PC release but tbh I play Elite : Dangerous with a Xbox 360 controller anyway and there was no cost difference (a couple of quid) so I thought sod it I buy it for the PS4.
Not been that impressed with Bloodbourne (I bought it second hand from the bay).
-
@bb36e It creeps me out when it cries.
-
I'd say some of the stuff needs more polish. Oh, and important: If you actually preordered and got yourself the preorder bonus ship... don't buy a new ship.
Because you'll most likely lack the blueprint for the hyperdrive. Which the new ship won't have.
Then there's the algorithm which sometimes makes daft decisions - like putting a marker ("Abandoned building! Rare tech here!") in the middle of the fricking ocean. Or putting a building under water while neglecting to put an entrance anywhere.
Also: Trying to scan flying creatures is a nightmare. Though I read that you should simply shoot them down with the mining laser (longer range) and then scan the corpse.
Ship-to-ship combat needs a lock-on feature - if there's more than one ship flying around you, you'll lose track of which one you shot at pretty fast.
Also: Each slot in your space ship's cargo has double the capacity of your exosuit.
-
@bb36e said in No Man's Sky:
yes, but the chances of that are incredibly rare...
So you're playing always-connected single player, with all the technical difficulties of multiplayer and close to zero chances of actually having another player even get close since the world is so vast?
I think they simply didn't think it through. Because God would that be dumb.
-
@Maciejasjmj Naw, it's not that bad. Yesterday the connection to the online service went down for quite a while but the only thing that didn't work during that time was uploading your stuff.
Probably rather more like Dark Souls than Diablo 3 in that regard.
-

I believe they took the 'always online' stuff out of it and you just need a connection to upload your stuff. We had a power flicker that knocked out the internet for a good bit during my first play session and it didn't boot me out of the game. Gonna double-check later, tho.
Edit: Yeah, apparently the only thing online lets you do right now is share your discoveries. Everything else you can do regardless of on or offline.
-
-
@bb36e Which is fecking weird because playing it feels like a PC game that has a PS4 port.
-
@lucas1 funny you should say that, apparently they ported over some PS4 libs for the PC version, so it seems to be PS4-first. or porting the libs was just easier, dunno
-
@bb36e If you use the menus they feel like PC menus, they are Windows 8 style tiles with the original xbox 360 ui which was slides.
EDIT: It is a shame if the PC port is as bad as advertised because I am really enjoying the game tbh. It was the same with Arkham Knight ... ace game shite PC port (bought it second hand for the PS4). Steam isn't a niche market FFS. However Hello Games are small company so I am willing to give them a bit of a pass if they do fix it.
-
Between this optimization mess and the netcode that wasn't, I'm starting to suspect the developers aren't very good at this whole "programming" thing.
-
@Maciejasjmj It is a real shame because I think the game is kinda cool. Kinda Glad I didn't wait and bought the PS4 version in a way.
-
-
@bb36e If you have a PS4 maybe not. But I am a "gaystation lover" (as my PC game playing friend says).
-
I've been avoiding this thread until the game was unlocked on Steam. Now I have played it so.
I learned the Korvax word for Korvax! (Psst: it's "Korvax".)
-
@lucas1 said in No Man's Sky:

It takes the UI design from Destiny, the biggest flaw in the game IMO.
-
@lucas1 said in No Man's Sky:

Just as a point of order, when you have like a 6-month exclusivity deal from Sony, you are no longer an "Indie" by definition. JUST PUTTIN' THAT OUT THERE.
I know it's hip and cool to be indie, but you guys at Hello Games ain't, better start coping with that now.
-
@mott555 said in No Man's Sky:

It has "multiplayer" in the same sense that Spore did.
With the difference that Spore went out of its way to populate the universe with creatures created by your friends or at least other human beings, where No Man's Sky does not.
So while in theory you might find an object discovered by Blakeyrat, in reality you could play for like 50 years and never come across it.

-
@Maciejasjmj Runs fine for me.
I've gotten a couple stalls, but I assumed that was more due to it having to generate more terrain on the fly than any optimization issue.
Initial loading takes quite a while though.
-
@blakeyrat said in No Man's Sky:

Yeah. No idea why they did that. Apparently the game knows it was Korvax, which is why the toasts say it, but you didn't know it was called that until you learned it?
Whatever, I'll get my fill watching others play it...
