@blakeyrat That would be the one! It's kinda like a British version of Airplane, if you've seen that one.

@ben_lubar Ah, but he's big into philantropy and seems to legitimately care about helping people. As President of the US he could do a lot of good things. We could guilt him into running!
Also, this made me think of this "paradox" that AFAIK doesn't have a name:
Imagine that you need someone to hold your phone and wallet for a while, for whatever reason (maybe you need to jump into the water to save a drowning kid). So you need to find someone who won't run off with them. But the only people around you are complete strangers. What do you do?You pick one at random. Because if you ask out loud "can someone hold my phone and wallet", the people who volunteer will most likely be crooks who want to run off with your wallet. But, on the other hand, most people are honest enough not to do that, so you're taking a smaller risk.
So while I wouldn't want a "completely random president", maybe we should incorporate randomness into the system somehow.

@blakeyrat that name (MegaVac) was popular for a while there, wasn't it? I'd swear PKD usedb it a lot as well.
And speaking of presidency and computers, there's one of his where the president is just a figure that does nothing unless the computer fails. And once it inevitably does and the humans take over, that's when shit hits the fan, as expected...

Status: Forgot to log into Vindictus yesterday, so I probably lost the really OP attendance event reward. Lame.
Status 2: Played Starbound a lot. Got the final armor set and a magneto gauntlet, which I then lost, and a friend gave me a new one of. Then I backed up everything and got the Frackin Universe mod to play with a friend. Not a fan, since they quadrupled the number of ores and tried to make everything craftable, and moved more things to more places. They basically made the game less fun and less exploration focused. Bah. Whatever, progressing with a new character there, maybe it can still be good.
Status 3: Digimon Cyber Sleuth is a pretty great game. I'm not even halfway, but I have some decently powerful minions, and two farms running to mass produce some more. This will go well. I really need to look into how camaraderie works, since some things I want need a lot of that. I'm trying to avoid looking at guides, but I'm also at a point where I'm starting to wonder what the most effective thing to do is: I can get something to level 30 pretty much effortlessly, and the full recovery at each level is a pretty major benefit. But it's slow going after that. I need to find out if the stat gain from constant evolution/devolution is a.) still a thing or b.) more effective than straight leveling at this point.

AFAIK I just made it up.
Asimov had a "stock" mainframe computer name which ended in "Vac" that he used a lot, but I can't remember what it was and I didn't care enough to look it up so I just made-up a new one.

A lot of his early stories revolved around how much better computers would make everyday life, then at some point (I guess when he really picked up on the robot stories) he started writing about how no matter how carefully you consider the problem space and programming, the computer will always do something unpredictable and annoying. That was basically the theme of all his Susan Calvin stories, and most of his other robot stories as well.
In fact, Calvin's "superpower" if you call it that is that she never believed all the propaganda her own company put out about how perfect their product was.

Well, good job, because it sounded genuine.
Oh, and the story I was thinking of is PKD, I mentioned it because I found it interesting how seemingly similar they are. Cracked open my story collection books now, found it, it's called "Stand-By". I really want to read the Asimov one now just to compare and contrast. And I should read more Asimov in general really, the amount I read is shamefully low.

@Onyx
IIRC the name was multivac

Ah, Suzan Calvin. I love that character.

@cartman82 I liked the story with the robot who "defeated" her at least for a long while until she figured out what exactly its malfunction was. The robot that, as it turned-out, had a defect which made it telepathic (just go with it) and via the Three Laws it went around telling people always exactly what they wanted to hear. It took Calvin ages to figure out that one, IIRC.

See, now I want to dig up my old Asimov collections and start reading.

Status: Apparently I still have an old Hamachi subscription which is about to expire. The LogMeIn website has no option to cancel a subscription, and no option to remove existing billing info. I Googled for "how to cancel a LogMeIn subscription" and it seems the only option is to call them.
I need to see if the saved billing info matches any of my existing unexpired cards. Hopefully it's for one I don't have anymore and I won't actually have to do anything.

Yeah, that's an obnoxious thing some companies like to do, take one last crack at convincing you not to let your subscription lapse.

Holy ****...they've been auto-billing me for years and I never noticed. It seems they just recently implemented a warning email... Googling "LogMeIn auto renewal" is turning up all kinds of horror stories about rates going up without warning, charging cards without notification, and even guessing customer's new expiration date until charging succeeds if the current billing info is expired! Plus a few reports of people calling customer service and being given the runaround so they can't cancel in time.

Shit, that's evil. Makes me glad Wells Fargo bumps my number every time I get a new card.

Couldn't you hit them with a chargeback for that by calling your CC company?

My CVT changes whenever the expiration date does, so not sure how that would work...

Reminds me of my experience with AOL about 20 years ago.
After using the free offer for 50 hours, I cancelled my subscription. Next month's MasterCard bill comes in, AOL charged me. Call them, they say it was a mistake and they would fix it. Next month's bill, same shit billed again. Called MasterCard, they told me there is nothing they can do !I tell them my solution: cancel the card, nobody, including AOL will be able to charge it.
Strange thing is, the agent transferred the call to her supervisor and he personally called AOL and got them to stop charging me and even got them to reimburse the two previous months.
"There is nothing we can do" indeed.

@blakeyrat I should find out if I bought a 970. I think it may have been a 980 tho.
Yep. 970.

SQL DBA teams, we have noticed some significant slowness on our {local} SQL servers. I attempted to open a SR to have you look into it, but I am unable to reach the page. We are noticing two particular issues. Our morning refresh that brings data from the {remote location} SQL server to {local} went from taking less than 1hr to taking over six hours daily. This began on July 22nd 2016, this is causing significant production issues.
We are noticing time out issues in our {Web} application. A stored procedure that typically runs in under a second is taking over the 30 second threshold to complete. This also is causing significant production issues. These are 2 critical production issues, please review ASAP and let us know what you find.
Response:
From:
It looks like it is back to normal now .
Please double check.From:
, take a look at this AMβs refresh time to see what they were.
What was the solution?From:
Obviously that wasn't the solution if the server is still <20% idle!
Also, why would checking this morning's run look any different if a "fix" was applied later today?
Good grief...

@Tsaukpaetra Pretty sure MS SQL Server regularly recompiles stored procedures anyway.
I guess not. Depends on how busy your server's cache is; it'll still recompile if it drops out of the cache. The second-to-last bullet point could apply too.

Point is, recompiling a stored proc isn't going to help, and a 5% performance improvement is like using a water hose to put out a house fire. Sure, it helps, but not bring-it-back-to-normal help.
