But do you have Windows Phone AND Windows car?
I do actually.
-
Staring at $176 in my cart. I can't afford to save so much money in these Steam sales.
Anyone: Is Elite Dangerous good?
-
Status: Well that was weird. Windows freaked out when I left it alone for an hour for dinner.
Came back to it with the mouse flickering between Busy and Working in Background cursors, and an otherwise black screen. Ctrl-Alt-Del no effect, but the mode indicators (like Caps lock etc) were working fine.
Ended up force powering off, because whatever was wrong persisted across hibernation/sleep.
Whatever.
-
Status: Just watched Morons From Outer Space. Very funny. Time well spent. :D
-
@Erufael The one with the IMDB rating of 4.5/10?
... sounds awful enough maybe I should check it out.

Status: Watching Silence of the Lambs...
Holy crap, is that Microfiche?! How old is this movie?!?

An interesting movie, to be sure.

Status: Fscking hell! WTF why is this still a running process?!
Luckily it was using my 2007 unsecure password, but still, how did I not notice this?

STATUS:
Me: In order to make a mobile app, I'll need a Mac. Because of XCode and crap. So I'll need to take a day to set up a hackintosh.
Boss: Ufff.... a whole day! We can't lose a whole day of work on that!
Me: ... or, you can just buy me a Mac.
Boss: Let's not be hasty. Maybe you can work on a different computer, while hackintosh stuff is installing on your main PC?
Plan for tomorrow: I'm setting up a Hackintosh AND moving git infrastructure to a new server, in parallel.

"Ok, so I moved OSX to the new server, and installed git on the computer... Wait..."

STATUS
Bought dedicated server for git:
- Intel Core i7-2600
- 2x HDD 3,0 TB SATA
- 4x RAM 8192 MB DDR3
30 euro / month.
Pretty sweet.

STATUS Apparently the office survived without me on Friday. I feel that I should create a crisis to validate my existence.

uhh..... github gives you unlimited private repos for around abouts 7 euro/month....(depending on current exchange rate)

Pretty sweet.that machine, for that price? yeah it is.... can't help but feel a bit of cognitive dissonance about the stated purpose though.

The most common verdict: It's a mile wide but only an inch deep, gameplay-wise.
Also suffers from some spectacularly idiotic design decisions.

Looks for something to throw at meAaaah, someone who never used Discourse had a proper reaction.
You have learned well, young one!

Status: Made a lovely Excel provisioning sheet for my customer with drop-downs for the things that aren't free-form entry. Except that I forgot to lock the cells
Only one person used the drop-downs. So, I now have a lovely sheet of all the different ways of spelling and formatting every damn option. That certainly won't import into my shiny new system, best get typing...

Status: God-damn-it! Fuck!
Our security team has decided that every HTTP connection made outgoing needs to go through their intrusion detection system. Which is dreadfully underprovisioned and hellishly slow. It's only irritating for people using browsers as keep-alives mean that later requests to the same host in the same session are relatively quick for a while, but if you're trying to do complicated webservices with non-trivial back-ends () then it's absolutely brutally slow (20 seconds or more delay on each connection).
Grrrr…
-
@blakeyrat BTW I'm about 35-40 minutes into Morons from Outer Space and there has been exactly one (1) joke that has made me slightly chuckle. (And it was a sight gag.)
The movie is incredibly unfunny, and also edited in a strange fashion I don't really understand. I say that because the editing seems to be tight, mostly, but it also serves to de-emphasize the jokes.
Alas, it's not bad in an entertaining way, it's just bad. It actually kind of reminds me of Buckaroo Banzai (and suspiciously was released the following year), except that film is actually funny.

1991, though it really only became a huge thing on VHS after 1995 or so. Microfiche was still very common at the time, and lingered well into the late 1990s.
-
@ScholRLEA We still had microfiche in our university library around 2008. Nobody used it, ever, though.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Well, it says DeVry, so that's the first problem.
-
@aliceif PC does what?

It's gonna have 3+ VPS-s, and git will be on one of those. It's gonna basically be a dev server.

yes, i'm aware, still a good price for renting it.

STATUS:
Ever worked with a guy who is technically competent, but has zero attention to detail and couldn't give a flying fuck about his product?
Anything he makes, I need to carefully test for pitfalls. Then usually send back to fix the shit that should have been fucking obvious from the start. It's infuriating.
-
@Lorne-Kates To be fair, IIRC they are MSDN licenses being shared outside of the company which is a no-no.
-
@cartman82 said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah, it's pretty annoying. With me, it was a fairly fresh graduate who had the knowledge but apparently too much faith in his own abilities to think any of his code might go wrong
-
@cartman82 You could piggy back off mine for $5/month with no support guarantee
:effort:
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

I wouldn't be surprised if every library out there has microfiche still. It costs money to replace!
I know I recall seeing it in the late 90s.

Possibly a dumb question: why Sandy Bridge, when you could get a newer model? $$?
-
@FrostCat I was gonna say, I don't know when libraries started scanning that stuff but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if it takes 20+ years to scan-in microfiche it took 80+ years to collect in the first place.

I think that's everybody here who looks at a open source product and says, "I don't see any bugs, there's no bugs".

You know what? Bill Gates. That's who I want to run for president. Seriously, he's extremely intelligent, likeable and famous (and rich!). He'd mop the floor with both Trump and Hillary.
-
@anonymous234 I don't know why "wealthy" is a desirable trait, but other than that I agree. I think Bill Gates would make a great President, from everything I've read about the guy.

it's a bit late for him to throw his hat into the ring.... also i rather think he's actually smart enough to realize that POTUS is the jind of job that he does not want.

-
@ben_lubar Did you ever read that Asimov story where the MegaVac (or whatever) computer chose the "best person" to be President instead of an election, and that system worked WAY better than the election, and then it turned out that, all along, a bug in the computer program meant it was selecting completely randomly?

that and:
She* who wishes for power, is unfit to wield it.
* or he, i guess, i mean the gender of the individual doesn't actually come into play when determining if they are fit to wield power.

Who would that be? "Not fixing everything Blakey thinks is a bug as fast as he wants" is not the same as "nobody sees bugs" here on Planet Earth.
-
@accalia He's said as much more than once.
“I like my current job at the Foundation better than I would being President. Also I wouldn’t be good at doing what you need to do to get elected. I thought Michael Bloomberg was thoughtful about why it didn’t make sense for him to try and run even though he is a great executive.”
