@PJH
I need some Lorem Ipsum of my own so I might give them a go ...
-
Good luck mining that sort of stuff from me. You can't even find my profile unless you're a friend of a friend.
-
-
My policy remains: "I don't have any of those." I might try simply saying no, too: "you may not have that." Perhaps the government would like to find out you're using a company that will give you data you're not allowed to have?
-
Anyone who says "decent people shouldn't have anything to hide" deserves a punch in the mouth.
-
It sounds like making a deal with the devil leaves you better off than this...

Just ask them : why are you wearing clothes ?
-
@TimeBandit OK, so you won't mind that camera I set up in your bathroom. There's also one in your child's bedroom. They don't have anything to hide either do they?
-
Well, I don't think scraping the information you set as public is wron...
you’re required to grant it full access to your Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and/or Instagram profiles
OH HELL NO

To make it worse, the company turns over to the landlords' indicators that the landlords aren't legally allowed to consider (age, race, pregnancy status)
To be honest, that has always seemed like one of the least enforceable laws ever.
At least until we are able to place a neuronal probe in the front cortex of the person making the decision to monitor what factors they are considering.

Actively seeking information it's illegal for you to use is a pretty good indicator that you plan to illegally use it.

Is it bollocks. Actively seeking information it's illegal for you to use is, in most cases at least, a prerequisite to illegally using said information, but there's a lot of people who actively seek such with no intent of actually using it.
For example, it would (I believe, based on my location) be illegal for me to make rifled gun barrels, but that doesn't stop me from being interested in how it could be done. Likewise explosive manufacture, synthesis of certain chemical substances, using XSS attacks to harvest other people's PII / money, and so on.
Going through life with the attitude of "that's illegal, I don't nee to know anything about it" puts you in danger through ignorance.

There's a difference between knowledge and information. Information would be things like credit card numbers, passwords, and email addresses, which may not be illegal to possess but may be illegal to use. Knowledge is things like what you were saying.

Yes, but it's not what you think it is. Think about the root of the word "knowledge".
-
Step one: Create an alt profile. Set it to full private.
Step two: Fill it with the most vile, awful, mind-raping things I can legally find. Y'know: goatse, tubgirl, @aliceif 's profile background
Step three: Anyone who asks me for my Fazebrook and InstaTweet profile access gets this
Step four: I don't get that job / apartment, but it's a win because fuck anyone who requires that info. I hope they have nightmares for the rest of their lives from what they've seen.

You are being incredibly dense regarding the subject at hand.
@ben_lubar was saying that if:
- You are in a position that you need to make a decision.
- It is illegal for you to use information X,Y, and Z as part of your decision making process.
- You seek out information X, Y, and Z anyway.
Then you are almost certainly going to use information X, Y, and Z illegally.
You are saying that it is illegal to make a bomb, but learning how to make a bomb is not a strong indicator that you will actually make a bomb. This may be true, but it does not contradict the point that @ben_lubar was making.

@aliceif I know. I meant the slightly wider context.

That background has a sane color scheme, isn't flashing, and doesn't cause seizures. I do not believe it is your background image.
-
@Lorne-Kates and I'm not clicking her profile to check, do not want seizures
-
@fbmac I look the risk. It is true!
-
@abarker No, ben was saying something other than that, and he was as wrong as you are.
-
You are saying that it is illegal to make a bomb, but learning how to make a bomb is not a strong indicator that you will actually make a bomb. This may be true, but
... if something goes boom, your having sought that knowledge may be used against you in accusing you of making a bomb.
-

Really? Are you just gonna stamp your feet and insist that you are right, or are you actually going to provide an argument?

Yes, but @tufty is saying that simply looking for bomb designs does not mean you will actually make a bomb. Once you add in that there was an explosion, then all bets are off.

- Create a private profile under the name of the person who is asking you for this information.
- Fill it with data that is creepy but legal and unlikely to be related to you or the person asking you for the information.
- Make the password something really creepy, but phrased as if it's them talking about you.
-
I agree that the startup idea is pretty scummy, but I kind of want these services to become prevalent enough that people get burned and realise that they need to treat FB/IG etc with as much suspicion as they'd treat any other company.

I wonder if this is just an elaborate way of stealing social media credentials from business owners.

A friend of mine used hist personal email server to insult awful service companies. Imagine asking their sales rep to spell out your email like comcastsucksdonkeyballs@lubar.net to see if it is correct.

I suspect that "humorous" is just there to provide plausible deniability for authors and readers. "Ha ha, of course I don't actually get turned on by gay centaur-on-unicorn stories, I just read them for the lulz! Ha ha"
